I'm writing from beautiful Karuizawa today. I've been up here with the girls since Thursday night. Thank you for praying for Caroline. Her jaw continues to heal and she has a great attitude about eating only "mushy" foods. We had a bit of a scare on Friday night when her right cheek suddenly swelled up for no apparent reason. It turns out that since she has no feeling in her cheeks yet she didn't know it had been cut by her braces and was getting infected. She was able to get it cleaned up and we're thankful that she's back down to a normal amount of swelling. Last Thursday the surgeon said he was pleased with her healing and started her on some jaw exercises to get things moving again. Thank you so much for praying for her complete recovery! She'll be going to the doctor again this Saturday.
Emma has been working every day here, cleaning cabins and managing the coffee shop of the Christian camp in town. We're thankful that she has these jobs and can be a blessing to the people she's helping. Amos began work last week up at Lake Nojiri where he helps in the office and is doing lifeguarding. It's hard to be split up in different locations, but he is doing well there and enjoying being invited to people's cabins for meals. Thanks for praying that he will be safe and also be an encouragement to people he meets there. We'll be in touch by phone and I'll be going up there next weekend to see him.
Tim is in Niigata right now. He preached this morning and held a seminar in a church where he's been before. He said the "crowd" was small but attentive. Always having to think on his feet, in the afternoon he was beginning what was to be an initial meeting for parents followed by one for youth when the pastor called in all the elementary age kids. Tim had a group of 10 children as young as 2nd graders sitting in on his "how to talk about sex with your teens" session. He ended up reading the first chapter of the book he is writing for children and used that as a launching point for the parents in the audience. Monday he has an all-day abstinence instructors seminar for 12 people (so far) who have signed up for the training. He's thankful that the next two weeks will be mainly in the office where he hopes to be able to finish up the children's book he has been writing. Thank you for remembering to pray for him.
One thing happened in my ladies Bible study that I didn't share last week. We were reading passages about Abraham and the women were telling me that they appreciated being able to read highlights since the new names are so hard to comprehend. When I asked if there were questions, Mrs. Yamazaki, who hasn't read the Bible before, asked me about where God came from if He is the one who created the whole world. I took her back to Genesis 1:1 and said that it takes faith to believe that God just IS. It was like a light went on! She said, "Oh, so if I believe in God then all these things will make more sense to me, right?" Thank you for praying for Mrs. Yamazaki and the other precious women who are reading through the Bible with me right now. We will meet again in September.
Silas leaves on Saturday for training "camp" in Georgia in preparation for leaving on The World Race in September. Please pray that the Lord would draw Silas' team to Himself and use them in mighty ways as they travel and work in various situations together. God has graciously supplied about 50% of Silas's needed support so far so the remaining 50% is another big prayer request. He needs to have the next $1500 raised by August 15. If you would like to know more so that you can pray, please sign up for receive Silas' updates at http://silascole.theworldrace.org/.
Thank you for praying for our family and ministry during these summer days. Life is different and we're thankful that God is with us wherever we are. We pray for you too, that you will enjoy your summer and the changes in schedule it brings. We appreciate you!
