Serving with Wycliffe in North Carolina
Don and Jane work with Wycliffe Bible Translators. Wycliffe
translators live among the Bible-less peoples of the world, learning their languages, translating the Scriptures and encouraging believers. Don and Jane work at Wycliffe’s technical training
center in North Carolina. Don designs and edits technical web sites that directly address the computer needs of Bible translators. Jane creates displays for JAARS office decor and
illustrations for publication.

We are grateful to still be involved in the Bible translation effort after 37 years of service. It is a precious gift from the Lord when your education and experience, as well as talents and desires are also your calling. Our job is never work. As you pray, begin by praising God with us for how He is blessing our lives:
- We are very thankful for our faithful prayer and financial supporters who give of their time and resources. We are thankful for those who encourage us and lift our hearts with friendship and fellowship.
- Praise the Lord despite a minor ‘episode’ (the doctor is not sure of a diagnosis) in January, Don did not lose his driving privileges and there have been no reoccurrences. The state of North Carolina is doing an official review of Don’s medical situation but his attending neurologist is recommending that he retain his driver’s license.
- After Don’s annual physical in February, the doctor reported, “You’re in the best shape you’ve been in for years. Whatever you’re doing, keep it up!” Last year Don lost 65 lbs. and has kept it off. Overall, he looks and feels good. Praise the Lord!
- I, too, praise God for mostly good health and enjoy being able to say ‘yes’ to art projects after years of having to mostly say ‘no’.
- We are grateful to see our granddaughter grow as she passes her 4th month. It was a privilege to be at the ceremony where Robert and Bonnie dedicated themselves to give Raven a stable, Christ-centered home. We, too, promised to be part of her extended Christian family.
- God has been faithful to give Robert the stamina and dedication to finish his Master’s studies even as he took on more responsibilities at work and became a father. He will graduate in May with his an MBA.
- Praise God with us for the sense of spiritual refreshment and renewal that we have felt in the last few months.
The next two weeks are overloaded with deadlines that have caught up with us. Our bodies just reminded us (by spending several days in bed with severe colds) that we need more rest in our sixties than we did in our twenties to feel ‘normal’.
We depend on your prayers; please keep this list handy when God lays us on your hearts:
- Having lost several days to illness, we need a quick recovery and a return to full strength.
- Wisdom in time management
- Don has several projects at his office that can only be executed in very specific time slots. These same photo projects are dependent upon favorable weather conditions and may require a lot of on-the-spot creativity.
- Also, this week Don and I will be working together on a photo shoot for a large display in the Tour Room where almost every new visitor to JAARS gets their first impression of Wycliffe’s work here.
- Since the Tour Room will remain fully functional while we (several artists and craftsmen) refurbish the décor, we can only update during certain hours. Each artist’s work has a domino effect on others. Unfortunately, (because of his work load) Don’s ‘domino’ is one of the first that must fall.
- Pray for me that I’ll be creative and effective as I visually communicate through displays and art what our work of Bible translation is all about.
- Don will be leaving in the next few days with the men from our local church to a mountain retreat. He documents the event photographically and helps promote it annually. Pray that he’ll finish his tasks at the office and be free to enjoy the fellowship at the retreat.
- We are behind in our paperwork and feel tremendous personal pressure to somehow ‘get on top’ of this perpetual problem. This too, seems to be a time management / physical energy / emotional stamina / desire conflict.
- o Insurance forms
- o Thank you notes
- o E-mails
- o Required Wycliffe paperwork
- o Travel research
- o Income taxes
- o Web site update
- Wisdom in budgeting finances – knowing the Lord’s mind when our funds arrive on a ‘feast or famine’ type of curve.
- Our out-of-pocket medical expenses have gradually crept up again – mainly due to Don’s medicines that do not come in generic (the drugs are expensive and our insurance covers only 25%).
- Don’s 1994 Blazer with 240,000 miles on it is showing its age. Some repairs need to be made this year; new tires are an immediate concern.
- Should we spend the ‘extra’ money when it comes in on urgent needs or save it for when the support funds might be low?
- A few home maintenance projects that have been put off for years can no longer be ignored. Funds designated for specific projects help us tremendously. Some needs:
- o New roof
- o Doggie door
- o Termite treatment
- o Garage door
- o Kitchen flooring
- o Painting
- o TV cable repair, damaged after lightning strike
- Wisdom for Don to know whether to continue working with the local volunteer Fire Department or to retire after 22 years of service.
- Discernment as we make plans for the coming year: deciding about family reunions and finalizing vacation plans.
- Pray that we would not grow weary spiritually or emotionally as we juggle our ministry, our personal relationships, and our need to refresh.
We are looking forward to see how God will answer your prayers over the next few months as you upheld us before the throne of Grace.
Serving Him together,
Jane
