Creation & Foundations - Genesis 5:1-32 - October 10, 2025

 “This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created.” Genesis 5:1-2

 I’ll admit, genealogies like the ones we read in Genesis 5 are not necessarily the most exciting parts of God’s Word. It’s easy to get lost in the list of names and ages of people, and quickly disconnect from what God might have us learn through this information. A few of the names in this genealogy might stand out as more well-known biblical characters, such as Adam, Enoch, Methuselah, and Noah. All of whose lives have very cool stories. However, what stood out to me in reading this chapter is God’s overarching sovereignty and plan for His people.

 If my math is correct, from the time Adam was created until Noah became a father, we have over 1,500 years and 10 generations of family history documented here. One of the first things that might catch your attention is the overall length of life these guys lived. But what I think is even more important is how God was intentionally working through the lives of these men and families to achieve His ultimate purposes. This might just look like a list of names and ages, but it’s actually a record of God’s faithfulness and purposes.

 I can even look back on my life and see experiences that I thought were just things happening in the moment, but now have the clarity to see how God was working to shape me into the man that I am today. The elective classes I took back in High School, the different job experiences I’ve had, where I went to college - all were past occurrences on my God-ordained timeline to lead me where I am now.

 In the moment, we often cannot see what God is doing. But my encouragement this morning is to take hope in the fact that God is sovereign and everything happens according to His will. Whether your current circumstances are filled with joy or struggle, God is at work. Some of your efforts today may have an immediate impact, while others may not be felt for 1,500 years. But God is faithful. Wherever you find yourself today, focus on God and seek what He is doing in your life. Obedience to Him leads to lasting joy, peace, and hope.

«Este es el libro de las generaciones de Adán. Cuando Dios creó al hombre, lo hizo a imagen y semejanza de Dios. Los creó varón y hembra, y los bendijo y los llamó Hombre cuando fueron creados». Génesis 5:1-2

 Admito que las genealogías como las que leemos en Génesis 5 no son necesariamente las partes más emocionantes de la Palabra de Dios. Es fácil perderse en la lista de nombres y edades de las personas, y desconectarse rápidamente de lo que Dios podría querer que aprendamos a través de esta información. Algunos de los nombres de esta genealogía pueden destacar por ser personajes bíblicos más conocidos, como Adán, Enoc, Matusalén y Noé. Todos ellos tienen historias muy interesantes. Sin embargo, lo que me llamó la atención al leer este capítulo es la soberanía y el plan general de Dios para su pueblo.

 Si mis cálculos son correctos, desde el momento en que Adán fue creado hasta que Noé se convirtió en padre, tenemos más de 1500 años y 10 generaciones de historia familiar documentadas aquí. Una de las primeras cosas que pueden llamar la atención es la duración total de la vida de estas personas. Pero lo que creo que es aún más importante es cómo Dios obró intencionadamente a través de las vidas de estos hombres y familias para alcanzar Sus propósitos finales. Puede que esto parezca solo una lista de nombres y edades, pero en realidad es un registro de la fidelidad y los propósitos de Dios.

 Incluso puedo mirar atrás en mi vida y ver experiencias que pensé que eran solo cosas que sucedían en el momento, pero ahora tengo la claridad para ver cómo Dios estaba obrando para moldearme y convertirme en el hombre que soy hoy. Las clases optativas que tomé en la escuela secundaria, las diferentes experiencias laborales que he tenido, la universidad a la que fui... todo fueron acontecimientos pasados en mi línea de tiempo ordenada por Dios para llevarme a donde estoy ahora.

 En el momento, a menudo no podemos ver lo que Dios está haciendo. Pero mi aliento esta mañana es que tengamos esperanza en el hecho de que Dios es soberano y todo sucede según Su voluntad. Ya sea que tus circunstancias actuales estén llenas de alegría o de dificultades, Dios está obrando. Algunos de tus esfuerzos de hoy pueden tener un impacto inmediato, mientras que otros pueden no sentirse hasta dentro de 1500 años. Pero Dios es fiel. Dondequiera que te encuentres hoy, concéntrate en Dios y busca lo que Él está haciendo en tu vida. La obediencia a Él conduce a una alegría, una paz y una esperanza duraderas.
