Creation & Foundations - Genesis 1-11 (Review) - October 27, 2025

 Congratulations! Whether it is your first or 50th time reading through the Bible, good work! Reading Scripture is the best tool for keeping our eyes on the goal. 

 Looking back over Genesis 1 through 11, we realize it is foundational to understanding the whole Bible. These 11 chapters alone are quoted over 100 times in the New Testament. It is worth remembering that New Testament authors, including Jesus, viewed Genesis as absolutely historical, true, and authoritative. Think about it. If the first Adam were only an allegory, then by all logic so is the second Adam. (Jesus.) The whole point of Jesus dying for our sins becomes moot, and "we are of all people to be most pitied."

 In these chapters, we have seen the origins of life, marriage, sin, language, government, and culture, to name a few. God is setting a foundation for our understanding of Him and His purposes for us. 

 We were created for an intimate relationship with God. His design was a perfect garden paradise. 

 Part of this quality of being created in His image means we have choice. Choice to love Him and obey Him… or not. So the enemy has been introduced. The story becomes a battle. The enemy will do anything to distract us from obedience to God. 

Failure to obey resulted in loss of intimacy, but God did not abandon them. He made a way through the first death of a living creature. 

 And so the scene is set, the world becomes corrupt. But God sees the good and honest heart. Enoch "was not", and Noah is given a big job! The cycle repeats as we come to the Tower of Babel, where man's hubris/pride to control his world is seen. "Let us build for ourselves… let us make a name for ourselves." Pride is probably our biggest enemy. Here, the goal of reading Scripture faithfully becomes key, because the more we know about God, the more we know we hardly know anything at all.

 Even genealogies are introduced ( our favorite!) But don't let them distract you. Let them remind you that they tell us that God sees every single individual. Every name is significant to God. Each one must make the choice to follow God or not. Each one will give an account. Your name is written in a book. And though other people's eyes may glaze over when it comes to your life, God's won't.

 As we commit ourselves to reading God's word every day, it is so important to keep the big picture in mind. When we lose sight of the bigger picture and see only the small pieces, it is easy to think, "I would never do that!" Or to think we might actually know something! But the big picture reminds us that He is the Creator God, and I am not. He makes the rules. He puts the stars in place, and I look at them. His love for us is so much bigger than we can comprehend. These first 11 chapters give us the story of the foundation of history and a peek into the character of God, who relentlessly loves, calls, and forgives.

 "Do you not know? 

Have you not heard? 

Has it not been declared to you from the beginning? 

Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?

It is He who sits above the vault of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers. 

He stretches out the heavens like a curtain and spreads them like a tent to dwell in." Isaiah 40:21, 22

 ¡Enhorabuena! Tanto si es la primera vez que lees la Biblia como si es la quincuagésima, ¡buen trabajo! Leer las Escrituras es la mejor herramienta para mantener la vista puesta en la meta.

 Al repasar Génesis 1 a 11, nos damos cuenta de que es fundamental para comprender toda la Biblia. Solo estos once capítulos se citan más de cien veces en el Nuevo Testamento. Vale la pena recordar que los autores del Nuevo Testamento, incluido Jesús, consideraban el Génesis como absolutamente histórico, verdadero y autoritario. Piénsalo. Si el primer Adán fuera solo una alegoría, entonces, por lógica, también lo sería el segundo Adán (Jesús). El sentido de la muerte de Jesús por nuestros pecados se vuelve discutible, y «somos, de entre todos los pueblos, los más dignos de lástima».

En estos capítulos, hemos visto los orígenes de la vida, el matrimonio, el pecado, el lenguaje, el gobierno y la cultura, por nombrar algunos. Dios está sentando las bases para que podamos comprenderlo a Él y Sus propósitos para nosotros.

 Fuimos creados para tener una relación íntima con Dios. Su diseño era un jardín paradisíaco perfecto.

 Parte de esta cualidad de haber sido creados a Su imagen significa que tenemos la posibilidad de elegir. La posibilidad de elegir amarlo y obedecerlo... o no. Así que el enemigo ha sido presentado. La historia se convierte en una batalla. El enemigo hará cualquier cosa para distraernos de la obediencia a Dios.

 El desobedecer resultó en la pérdida de la intimidad, pero Dios no los abandonó. Él abrió un camino a través de la primera muerte de un ser vivo.

 Y así se establece la escena, el mundo se corrompe. Pero Dios ve el corazón bueno y honesto. Enoc «no fue», ¡y a Noé se le da una gran tarea! El ciclo se repite cuando llegamos a la Torre de Babel, donde se ve la arrogancia/orgullo del hombre por controlar su mundo. «Construyamos para nosotros... hagámonos un nombre». El orgullo es probablemente nuestro mayor enemigo. Aquí, el objetivo de leer las Escrituras con fidelidad se convierte en clave, porque cuanto más sabemos sobre Dios, más sabemos que apenas sabemos nada.

 Incluso se introducen genealogías (¡nuestras favoritas!), pero no dejes que te distraigan. Deja que te recuerden que nos dicen que Dios ve a cada individuo. Cada nombre es significativo para Dios. Cada uno debe tomar la decisión de seguir a Dios o no. Cada uno dará cuenta. Tu nombre está escrito en un libro. Y aunque los ojos de otras personas pueden volverse indiferentes cuando se trata de tu vida, los de Dios no lo harán.

 Al comprometernos a leer la palabra de Dios todos los días, es muy importante tener en cuenta el panorama general. Cuando perdemos de vista el panorama general y solo vemos las pequeñas piezas, es fácil pensar: «¡Yo nunca haría eso!» O pensar que realmente sabemos algo. Pero el panorama general nos recuerda que Él es el Dios Creador, y yo no. Él establece las reglas. Él coloca las estrellas en su lugar, y yo las miro. Su amor por nosotros es mucho más grande de lo que podemos comprender. Estos primeros 11 capítulos nos dan la historia de los fundamentos de la historia y una mirada al carácter de Dios, que ama, llama y perdona sin cesar.

 «¿No lo sabes?

¿No lo has oído?

¿No te lo han declarado desde el principio?

¿No lo has entendido desde la fundación de la tierra?

Él es quien está sentado sobre la bóveda de la tierra, y sus habitantes son como langostas.

Él extiende los cielos como una cortina y los despliega como una tienda para morar en ellos». Isaías 40:21, 22
