Creation & Foundations - Genesis 2:1-25 - October 4, 2025

Our passage for today begins with God resting. How do you view rest in your own life and routines?

 God declares to us in His word the following truth about Himself, revealed to the prophet Isaiah, “Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.”(40:28)

 The idea of God resting from all His work is a difficult concept for me to wrap my mind around. First of all, God tells us that He spoke the world into existence, something that is also hard to imagine, because objects don’t generally appear simply because we mention them, but for God, that is not at all difficult. God tells us that He made everything out of nothing. The term “ex nihilo” is the official term from the original language, emphasizing God’s unique capacity as the Almighty Sovereign of the universe. 

 As the Almighty God, our Creator was obviously not tired from His “efforts” involved in the creation of everything. We tend to think of rest from our human perspective as something that is restorative, returning strength and vigor to our frail human frames, but God didn’t experience any of that in the process of creation. God was not weary from His labors, His creative muscles were not sore, and His purpose on the seventh day wasn’t concerned with His need, but rather for ours. As our Creator, He knows our needs and the importance of setting aside time to slow down, reorient, and prioritize our relationship with Him.

 God blessed the seventh day and made it holy. The idea of holiness is not a gilt-edged book of sacred writings, nor is it ostentatious temples that attempt to evoke a feeling of our own insignificance in the presence of stained glass and soaring spires. The idea of holiness has more to do with the separation of self from all that is mundane and ego-driven. It calls us to take what God has given and hold it in a manner that honors Him by placing His desires at the very pinnacle of our focus. It allows all that is earthly and distracting to take a back seat to what He has called us to do in this life. It may involve some discomfort and will likely require sacrifice, but it is the highest calling that God has for us, and it should prompt us to continually evaluate our standing in our relationship with Him. Is He in first place in our lives?

 God loved to walk in the garden that He had provided for all of His creation, and there was sufficient leisure in the garden, in the presence of God, to be able to enjoy being together in unlimited measure. All of that changed with Adam’s decision to allow disobedience to separate him from God and the closeness they shared.

 I believe that we continue to struggle with disobedience today, as we discuss knowing God, yet we often wander away from intimate time with Him. It is no less disobedience to allow ourselves to be drawn away by becoming too busy or too given to an entertainment culture that continues to separate and distance us from a closer walk with God.

 How might you be able to change your routine in order to give more focus and emphasis to personal time with God? What steps can you take to see improvement? Are you satisfied with your experience of God on Sundays? Does your worship of God continue after a corporate time with other believers, or do you break from the mood that has been established to direct your attention to other activities?

 Our culture will continue to pressure us to be molded into thinking in a way that is comfortable and doesn’t rock the boat, but I would suggest that maybe the boat needs a little aggressive rocking from time to time.

 Nuestro pasaje de hoy comienza con Dios descansando. ¿Cómo ves el descanso en tu propia vida y rutinas?

 Dios nos declara en Su palabra la siguiente verdad acerca de Sí mismo, revelada al profeta Isaías: «¿No lo sabías? ¿No lo has oído? El Señor es el Dios eterno, el Creador de los confines de la tierra. Él no se desmaya ni se cansa; su entendimiento es insondable» (40:28).

  La idea de que Dios descansa de toda su obra es un concepto difícil de comprender para mí. En primer lugar, Dios nos dice que Él creó el mundo con su palabra, algo que también es difícil de imaginar, porque los objetos no suelen aparecer simplemente porque los mencionemos, pero para Dios eso no es nada difícil. Dios nos dice que lo creó todo de la nada. El término «ex nihilo» es el término oficial del idioma original, que enfatiza la capacidad única de Dios como Soberano Todopoderoso del universo. 

 Como Dios Todopoderoso, nuestro Creador obviamente no se cansó de Sus «esfuerzos» en la creación de todo. Tendemos a pensar en el descanso desde nuestra perspectiva humana como algo que nos restaura, que devuelve la fuerza y el vigor a nuestros frágiles cuerpos humanos, pero Dios no experimentó nada de eso en el proceso de la creación. Dios no estaba cansado por Sus labores, Sus músculos creativos no estaban doloridos, y Su propósito en el séptimo día no tenía que ver con Sus necesidades, sino con las nuestras. Como nuestro Creador, Él conoce nuestras necesidades y la importancia de reservar tiempo para reducir el ritmo, reorientarnos y dar prioridad a nuestra relación con Él.

  Dios bendijo el séptimo día y lo santificó. La idea de santidad no es un libro dorado de escritos sagrados, ni son templos ostentosos que intentan evocar un sentimiento de nuestra propia insignificancia ante los vitrales y las agujas elevadas. La idea de santidad tiene más que ver con la separación del yo de todo lo que es mundano y está impulsado por el ego. Nos llama a tomar lo que Dios nos ha dado y a conservarlo de una manera que le honre, colocando Sus deseos en la cima de nuestro enfoque. Permite que todo lo que es terrenal y nos distrae pase a un segundo plano frente a lo que Él nos ha llamado a hacer en esta vida. Puede que implique cierta incomodidad y probablemente requiera sacrificio, pero es el llamado más elevado que Dios tiene para nosotros, y debería impulsarnos a evaluar continuamente nuestra posición en nuestra relación con Él. ¿Está Él en primer lugar en nuestras vidas?

 A Dios le encantaba pasear por el jardín que había proporcionado a toda su creación, y había suficiente ocio en el jardín, en presencia de Dios, para poder disfrutar de estar juntos sin límites. Todo eso cambió con la decisión de Adán de permitir que la desobediencia lo separara de Dios y de la cercanía que compartían.

 Creo que hoy en día seguimos luchando contra la desobediencia, mientras hablamos de conocer a Dios, pero a menudo nos alejamos del tiempo íntimo con Él. No es menos desobediencia permitir que nos alejemos por estar demasiado ocupados o demasiado entregados a una cultura del entretenimiento que sigue separándonos y alejándonos de un caminar más cercano con Dios.

 ¿Cómo podrías cambiar tu rutina para centrarte más y dar más importancia al tiempo personal con Dios? ¿Qué pasos puedes dar para mejorar? ¿Estás satisfecho con tu experiencia de Dios los domingos? ¿Tu adoración a Dios continúa después del tiempo compartido con otros creyentes, o rompes con el estado de ánimo que se ha creado para dirigir tu atención a otras actividades?

 Nuestra cultura seguirá presionándonos para que pensemos de una manera cómoda y que no haga olas, pero yo sugeriría que tal vez el barco necesite un poco de movimiento agresivo de vez en cuando.
