Connect with God - Ephesians 6:17 - January 11, 2026

The Bible is an amazing book. Sometimes I like to read and think on multiple chapters at a time, and other times, like today, just one verse is enough. Today's verse is Ephesians 6:17: "Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."  So, what is the Word of God that Ephesians 6:17 is talking about? Why do we need it? How can we use it, and what do we do with it? 

 The Word of God is the Bible, in its entirety. Writings that are Holy-Spirit-breathed. The books that God has written for us.  How are we to use the Word of God, talked about in Ephesians 6:17, as "the sword of the Spirit"? The simple answer is to read God's Word and learn from it constantly. There are always more questions to ask and more information to take in. Keith Foskey, D.Min, Senior Pastor at Sovereign Grace Family Church in Jacksonville, Florida, made a good statement regarding learning the Bible: "You know the best way to become a better Bible student? Learn to read better. The Word of God does not enter through osmosis." Just as a child doesn't learn to read by osmosis, taking in God's Word requires more effort than keeping one's Bible nearby on the nightstand. 

 Why do we need God's Word? Why does it matter? We need Scripture to stand up against the devil's attacks. Just a few verses previous (6:11 and 14), it talks about "standing firm; and "Standing your ground". In those days, when armies fought each other on the battlefield, the armies with more disciplined soldiers, who could 'stand their ground' when attacked, would more often than not, win. God has already given us the Belt of Truth, Breastplate of Righteousness, Shoes of the Gospel of Peace, Shield of Faith, Helmet of Salvation, and the Sword of the Spirit. All we need to do is 'stand our ground' and be active in using these tools.

 Whenever a challenge, opposition, and attack come our way, we need to be able to immediately draw on Scripture as our offensive weapon. Think of Jesus when he was tempted by the Devil (Matthew 4:11). What did he do when faced with the devil's challenges? He fought back against Satan by directly quoting Scripture that he knew by heart, and that was the exact Word of truth that applied to the specific temptation that Satan was throwing at Jesus. Jesus didn't just have Scripture memorized–He knew exactly how to apply it. Whereas the devil can quote from the scriptures, he will never submit to them.

 In the same way, when our enemy Satan attacks, we are to stand firm and counter him with the accurate use of God's Word.  We are to submit to Scripture, the only infallible authority on earth. Despite what some may say, Scripture can never and will never err. 

 Let's continue to make a daily habit of reading and studying God's Word. It is never a waste of time. We will be armed and ready when our enemy, the Devil, attacks. 

 Father God, I pray that you will lead all of us to read your Scriptures daily throughout this year, that we may strive to understand them and submit to your Word. Amen.

 La Biblia es un libro increíble. A veces me gusta leer y reflexionar sobre varios capítulos a la vez, y otras veces, como hoy, basta con un solo versículo. El versículo de hoy es Efesios 6:17: «Tomad el yelmo de la salvación y la espada del Espíritu, que es la palabra de Dios».  Entonces, ¿qué es la Palabra de Dios a la que se refiere Efesios 6:17? ¿Por qué la necesitamos? ¿Cómo podemos usarla y qué hacemos con ella? 

 La Palabra de Dios es la Biblia en su totalidad. Escritos inspirados por el Espíritu Santo. Los libros que Dios ha escrito para nosotros.  ¿Cómo debemos usar la Palabra de Dios, mencionada en Efesios 6:17, como «la espada del Espíritu»? La respuesta sencilla es leer la Palabra de Dios y aprender de ella constantemente. Siempre hay más preguntas que hacer y más información que asimilar. Keith Foskey, D.Min, pastor principal de la iglesia Sovereign Grace Family Church en Jacksonville, Florida, hizo una buena declaración sobre el aprendizaje de la Biblia: «¿Sabes cuál es la mejor manera de convertirte en un mejor estudiante de la Biblia? Aprende a leer mejor. La Palabra de Dios no se asimila por ósmosis». Al igual que un niño no aprende a leer por ósmosis, asimilar la Palabra de Dios requiere más esfuerzo que tener la Biblia cerca, en la mesita de noche. 

 ¿Por qué necesitamos la Palabra de Dios? ¿Por qué es importante? Necesitamos las Escrituras para resistir los ataques del diablo. Solo unos versículos antes (6:11 y 14), se habla de «permanecer firmes» y «mantener la posición». En aquellos días, cuando los ejércitos luchaban entre sí en el campo de batalla, los ejércitos con soldados más disciplinados, que podían «mantener su posición» cuando eran atacados, solían ganar. Dios ya nos ha dado el cinturón de la verdad, la coraza de la justicia, las sandalias del evangelio de la paz, el escudo de la fe, el yelmo de la salvación y la espada del Espíritu. Todo lo que tenemos que hacer es «mantener nuestra posición» y utilizar activamente estas herramientas.

 Siempre que se nos presente un desafío, una oposición o un ataque, debemos ser capaces de recurrir inmediatamente a las Escrituras como arma ofensiva. Pensemos en Jesús cuando fue tentado por el diablo (Mateo 4:11). ¿Qué hizo cuando se enfrentó a los desafíos del diablo? Luchó contra Satanás citando directamente las Escrituras que sabía de memoria, y esa era la Palabra de verdad exacta que se aplicaba a la tentación específica que Satanás le estaba lanzando a Jesús. Jesús no solo tenía memorizadas las Escrituras, sino que sabía exactamente cómo aplicarlas. Aunque el diablo puede citar las Escrituras, nunca se someterá a ellas.

  Del mismo modo, cuando nuestro enemigo Satanás nos ataque, debemos mantenernos firmes y contrarrestarlo con el uso preciso de la Palabra de Dios.  Debemos someternos a las Escrituras, la única autoridad infalible en la tierra. A pesar de lo que algunos puedan decir, las Escrituras nunca pueden errar y nunca lo harán.

Sigamos adquiriendo el hábito diario de leer y estudiar la Palabra de Dios. Nunca es una pérdida de tiempo. Estaremos armados y preparados cuando nuestro enemigo, el diablo, ataque.

 Padre Dios, te pido que nos guíes a todos a leer tus Escrituras diariamente a lo largo de este año, para que nos esforcemos por comprenderlas y someternos a tu Palabra. Amén.
