Daily Word of Encouragement 12.14.25 - Ben Merilatt

Advent | The Coming Savior - Matthew 2:19-23 - December 14, 2025

Lord Jesus, Holy Spirit, grant us the ability to understand your word and the order of our steps along your way today, Amen.

 This passage today reminds me that God is the master craftsman. He sovereignly guides Joseph through dreams to protect Jesus from Herod and his son Archelaus. In the same instruction, God fulfills the prophecy written in the book of Hosea calling Jesus back from Egypt, Jesus will now be from Galilee as prophesied by Isaiah, and Matthew notes that the name Nazareth, “Nazaret” meaning green shoot or branch, alludes to a third prophecy in Isaiah where a new shoot will grow from the stump of the line of Jesse. Wow. I can’t avoid a parking ticket. Here, God is forestalling the best efforts of the most powerful nation in Jesus’ time to eliminate him, while fulfilling His promises from centuries before. Our God is awesome.

 While God sovereignly coordinated all time, heaven, and earth to the moment described in Matthew 2:19-21, Joseph still had a choice: to obey or not. This time through the gospels, I am impressed with Joseph’s obedience. John the Baptist’s father was struck mute after a personal visit from an angel, and Mary was visited by the angel Gabriel. All Joseph needed to obey God and do his part was a dream. How many times have we missed God’s invitation to impact all history and the course of all creation because we are distracted, bitter, busy, etc.? I wonder what Joseph’s take on these events was years later.

 Isaiah was also faithful many centuries before. His life was in no way easy or simple either. Can you imagine being an Old Testament prophet knowing the nation of Israel has a history of killing prophets God sends them? Adding to this, God tells Isaiah to keep sharing with His people to “Make the hearts of this people dull, and their ears heavy, and blind their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed (Isaiah 6:10, ESV).” Isaiah’s obedience had real grit. Despite the conditions in his life, Isaiah obeyed God to his gruesome death and delivered this powerful message showing the right response to God and his word.

 In this passage, we see a complex mix of circumstances, prophecy, and politics on the one hand. On the other hand, God is simply faithfully doing what he promised from the beginning, in line with his chaotic ordering nature. Jesus embodies the light God was pleased to bring. In recognizing Jesus as God’s light, agreeing that he is truly good and worthy of all our praise and honor, we can choose to obey God’s command to participate with all creation in loving and lifting Jesus everything. Will it take an angel, a dream, or continued faith for us to see, listen, and understand Jesus as the light of our world, today and always?

 Thank you, Father, for sending Jesus to us. The way he came appears complicated to us, but you simply sent him as you promised, to reconcile us back from our legacy of rejecting you. Helps us to see, hear, and know you as the light of our world more each day. Amen.

 Señor Jesús, Espíritu Santo, concédenos la capacidad de comprender tu palabra y el orden de nuestros pasos en tu camino hoy, Amén.

 Este pasaje de hoy me recuerda que Dios es el maestro artesano. Él guía soberanamente a José a través de sueños para proteger a Jesús de Herodes y su hijo Arquelao. En la misma instrucción, Dios cumple la profecía escrita en el libro de Oseas que llama a Jesús a regresar de Egipto, Jesús ahora será de Galilea como profetizó Isaías, y Mateo señala que el nombre Nazaret, «Nazaret», que significa brote verde o rama, alude a una tercera profecía en Isaías donde un nuevo brote crecerá del tocón de la línea de Jesé. Vaya. No puedo evitar una multa de aparcamiento. Aquí, Dios está frustrando los mejores esfuerzos de la nación más poderosa de la época de Jesús para eliminarlo, al tiempo que cumple Sus promesas de siglos atrás. Nuestro Dios es impresionante.

 Aunque Dios coordinó soberanamente todo el tiempo, el cielo y la tierra hasta el momento descrito en Mateo 2:19-21, José todavía tenía una opción: obedecer o no. Esta vez, al leer los evangelios, me impresiona la obediencia de José. El padre de Juan el Bautista quedó mudo después de la visita personal de un ángel, y María recibió la visita del ángel Gabriel. Todo lo que José necesitaba para obedecer a Dios y cumplir con su parte era un sueño. ¿Cuántas veces hemos perdido la invitación de Dios para influir en toda la historia y el curso de toda la creación porque estamos distraídos, amargados, ocupados, etc.? Me pregunto cuál fue la opinión de José sobre estos acontecimientos años más tarde.

  Isaías también fue fiel muchos siglos antes. Su vida tampoco fue fácil ni sencilla. ¿Te imaginas ser un profeta del Antiguo Testamento sabiendo que la nación de Israel tiene un historial de matar a los profetas que Dios les envía? Además, Dios le dice a Isaías que siga compartiendo con su pueblo: «Endurece el corazón de este pueblo, y endurece sus oídos, y ciega sus ojos; no sea que vean con sus ojos, y oigan con sus oídos, y entiendan con su corazón, y se conviertan y sean sanados (Isaías 6:10, ESV)». La obediencia de Isaías fue realmente valiente. A pesar de las condiciones de su vida, Isaías obedeció a Dios hasta su espantosa muerte y transmitió este poderoso mensaje que muestra la respuesta correcta a Dios y a su palabra.

 En este pasaje, vemos una compleja mezcla de circunstancias, profecía y política, por un lado. Por otro lado, Dios simplemente está cumpliendo fielmente lo que prometió desde el principio, en consonancia con su naturaleza caótica y ordenadora. Jesús encarna la luz que Dios se complació en traer. Al reconocer a Jesús como la luz de Dios, al aceptar que él es verdaderamente bueno y digno de toda nuestra alabanza y honor, podemos elegir obedecer el mandato de Dios de participar con toda la creación en amar y exaltar a Jesús por encima de todo. ¿Se necesitará un ángel, un sueño o una fe continua para que veamos, escuchemos y comprendamos a Jesús como la luz de nuestro mundo, hoy y siempre?

 Gracias, Padre, por enviarnos a Jesús. La forma en que vino nos parece complicada, pero tú simplemente lo enviaste como prometiste, para reconciliarnos con nuestro legado de rechazo hacia ti. Ayúdanos a verte, escucharte y conocerte cada día más como la luz de nuestro mundo. Amén.
