Advent | The Coming Savior - 2 Corinthians 8:9 - December 22, 2025

 2 Corinthians 8:9 - For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.

 What was the greatest gift you ever got for Christmas?  One year, my brother and I got a Game Boy for Christmas.  This was pretty awesome because every year after we opened our presents, we would all pile into the minivan and drive to Fresno.  Most years, this was a little crazy making because we were all hyped up from the excitement of Christmas, and then we would have to just sit for 4 hours doing nothing.  We couldn't enjoy our new toys.   But this year, we traded off playing Kirby in the back seat.  The best part was that we opened the games first, so for like two gifts after that, we thought my parents forgot the game system to play them.  

 Well, what if the greatest gift were continuous all year long? Because really, the greatest gift is there for all; we just have to receive it every day.   

 The greatest gift of all, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.  A gift we do not deserve.  Jesus, though he was rich and in heaven, came to earth to fulfill God the Father's promise and prophecy to humanity by dying to save us. 

Why do we give gifts during Christmas? The giving part of Christmas should be because of our joy during this season.  The hustle and bustle of the season gets to us, and by now, you will only have a few harried days left to get gifts for friends and family.  But so often during this time, we ask ourselves the meaning and the purpose of Christmas.  Our generosity should be seen through the joy we have in receiving this greatest gift.  Jesus gave up his time in heaven to become a man and come down to sacrifice himself and save us.  By his poverty, we can become rich and be in heaven with him for eternity.  

 This gift is renewed everyday in God's word.  That is why I cherish my devotion time and these devotions that this church writes together.  There is a reason these come out at 5 am every morning, so that we can receive them the very first thing.  For some, that might not be early enough; for others, it is too early, but it helps me open God's word as early as possible every day and receive his continuous gift.  Every time I do not, sin creeps in. 

 So why not have Christmas every morning and receive the greatest gift of all?  Also, why not give the greatest gift of all to the people we come in contact with?

 Lord Jesus, thank you for becoming poor for our sake, so by your poverty we may become rich, and receive the greatest gift of all, eternal life. Amen.

 2 Corintios 8:9 - Porque ya conocéis la gracia de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, que por amor a vosotros se hizo pobre siendo rico, para que vosotros con su pobreza fuerais enriquecidos.

 ¿Cuál fue el mejor regalo que recibiste en Navidad?  Un año, mi hermano y yo recibimos una Game Boy por Navidad.  Fue increíble porque, cada año, después de abrir los regalos, nos subíamos todos a la furgoneta y nos íbamos a Fresno. La mayoría de los años era un poco loco porque estábamos muy emocionados por la Navidad y luego teníamos que estar sentados cuatro horas sin hacer nada. No podíamos disfrutar de nuestros nuevos juguetes. Pero ese año nos turnamos para jugar a Kirby en el asiento trasero.  Lo mejor fue que abrimos los juegos primero, así que, durante los dos regalos siguientes, pensamos que nuestros padres se habían olvidado de la consola para jugar.  

 Bueno, ¿y si el mejor regalo durara todo el año? Porque, en realidad, el mejor regalo está ahí para todos; solo tenemos que recibirlo cada día.   

El mejor regalo de todos, la gracia de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.  Un regalo que no merecemos.  Jesús, aunque era rico y estaba en el cielo, vino a la tierra para cumplir la promesa y la profecía de Dios Padre a la humanidad, muriendo para salvarnos.

 ¿Por qué damos regalos durante la Navidad? La parte de dar de la Navidad debería ser por nuestra alegría durante esta temporada.  El ajetreo de la temporada nos afecta y, a estas alturas, solo te quedan unos pocos días para comprar regalos para tus amigos y familiares.  Pero muy a menudo durante esta época, nos preguntamos cuál es el significado y el propósito de la Navidad. Nuestra generosidad debería verse reflejada en la alegría que sentimos al recibir este gran regalo. Jesús renunció a su vida en el cielo para convertirse en hombre y venir a sacrificarse y salvarnos. Gracias a su pobreza, podemos hacernos ricos y estar en el cielo con él por toda la eternidad.  

 Este regalo se renueva cada día en la palabra de Dios.  Por eso aprecio mi tiempo de devoción y estas devociones que esta iglesia escribe en conjunto. Hay una razón por la que se publican a las 5 de la mañana todos los días, para que podamos recibirlas a primera hora. Para algunos, puede que no sea lo suficientemente temprano; para otros, es demasiado temprano, pero a mí me ayuda a abrir la palabra de Dios lo antes posible cada día y recibir su regalo continuo. Cada vez que no lo hago, el pecado se apodera de mí. 

 Entonces, ¿por qué no celebrar la Navidad cada mañana y recibir el mayor regalo de todos? Además, ¿por qué no dar el mayor regalo de todos a las personas con las que entramos en contacto?

 Señor Jesús, gracias por hacerte pobre por nosotros, para que por tu pobreza podamos hacernos ricos y recibir el mayor regalo de todos, la vida eterna. Amén.
