Daily Word of Encouragement 12.2.25 - Todd Baker

Advent | The Coming Savior - Matthew 1:18-25 - December 2, 2025

Behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for that which has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.  And Joseph arose from his sleep, and did what the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife." Matthew 1:20 and 24

 As we read the Bible, God's Word, we often come across accounts in which God asks people to trust Him and do things that make absolutely no sense from a human perspective.  Here are a few examples:

* The Lord telling Joshua, and the children of Israel, to march around the walls of Jericho

* The Lord telling Abraham to sacrifice his son, his only son

* The Lord telling Noah to build an Ark, where it had never rained

* The Lord telling Gideon to reduce his army from 32,000 men to 300 men to fight 135,000 Midianites.

* Jesus telling Peter to get out of the boat and walk on the water to Him. 

 In our Matthew passage, the Lord sent an angel to tell Joseph in a dream that his pregnant fiancée, Mary, was pregnant; not by another man, but by the Holy Spirit.  Joseph obviously didn't totally grasp the truth of what he was told, but he believed and married Mary. 

 Have you ever felt God directing you to do something that made no sense from a human perspective?  Something like, to leave your high-paying job and accept a lower-paying job in another part of the country/to start tithing when you were barely making enough money to put food on the table/to volunteer for a ministry that didn't fit your skill set/to forgive someone who had hurt you badly. Example:  Erika Kirk forgiving Tyler Robinson, the man who assassinated her husband.

 If you are experiencing a situation like the ones I just listed, here are excerpts from some hymns that can inspire and guide your decision.

 * "I Have Decided To Follow Jesus"

* "Where He Leads Me I Will Follow"

* "Take My Life And Let It Be, Consecrated Lord To Thee"

* "Trust and Obey, For There's No Other Way"

* "Have Thine Own Way Lord, Have Thine Own Way, Thou Art The Potter, I Am The Clay" 

* "I Surrender All"

Dear Lord, thank you that we have the privilege of being part of Your family.  Please give us the desire to follow your guidance and directives and honor you with our lives.

 He aquí que un ángel del Señor se le apareció a José en sueños y le dijo: «José, hijo de David, no temas recibir a María como esposa, porque lo que en ella ha sido concebido es del Espíritu Santo.  Y José, despertando del sueño, hizo como el ángel del Señor le había mandado, y tomó a María por mujer». Mateo 1:20 y 24

 Al leer la Biblia, la Palabra de Dios, a menudo nos encontramos con relatos en los que Dios pide a las personas que confíen en Él y hagan cosas que, desde una perspectiva humana, no tienen ningún sentido.  He aquí algunos ejemplos:

 * El Señor le dice a Josué y a los hijos de Israel que marchen alrededor de las murallas de Jericó.

* El Señor le dice a Abraham que sacrifique a su hijo, su único hijo.

* El Señor le dice a Noé que construya un arca, donde nunca había llovido.

* El Señor le dice a Gedeón que reduzca su ejército de 32 000 hombres a 300 para luchar contra 135 000 madianitas.

* Jesús le dice a Pedro que salga de la barca y camine sobre el agua hacia Él.

En nuestro pasaje de Mateo, el Señor envió a un ángel para decirle a José en un sueño que su prometida, María, estaba embarazada; no de otro hombre, sino del Espíritu Santo. José obviamente no comprendió del todo la verdad de lo que le dijeron, pero creyó y se casó con María.

¿Alguna vez has sentido que Dios te guiaba a hacer algo que no tenía sentido desde una perspectiva humana? Algo como dejar tu trabajo bien remunerado y aceptar otro peor pagado en otra parte del país; empezar a dar el diezmo cuando apenas ganabas lo suficiente para poner comida en la mesa; ofrecerte como voluntario para un ministerio que no se ajustaba a tus habilidades; perdonar a alguien que te había hecho mucho daño. Ejemplo: Erika Kirk perdonando a Tyler Robinson, el hombre que asesinó a su marido.

 Si estás viviendo una situación como las que acabo de mencionar, aquí tienes algunos extractos de himnos que pueden inspirarte y guiar tu decisión.

 * «He decidido seguir a Jesús»

* «Donde Él me lleve, yo le seguiré»

* «Toma mi vida y déjala ser, consagrada a Ti, Señor»

* «Confía y obedece, porque no hay otro camino»

* «Haz tu voluntad, Señor, haz tu voluntad, tú eres el alfarero, yo soy el barro»

* «Me rindo por completo»

 Querido Señor, gracias por el privilegio de formar parte de tu familia.  Por favor, danos el deseo de seguir tu guía y tus directrices y honrarte con nuestras vidas.
