Advent | The Coming Savior - Colossians 1:15-20 - December 27, 2025

"Jesus is the image of the invisible God - For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens, and on earth - He is also the head of the body, the church - For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself."  Throughout the New Testament, Jesus is referred to as the "Son of God."  From a human perspective, this sounds like a lesser position than God the Father. One of the clearest proclamations that Jesus was and is God is found in John 10:30-33. In verse 30 Jesus states, "I and the Father are One."  Some religious people believe that He was God-like, but that he wasn't God, and that when he said, "I and the Father are One," He meant one in spirit.  We know this view is false because, in verses 31-33, we see that the people listening to Him knew exactly what He was saying.  We know this because they took up stones to stone Him. When He asked them why they wanted to stone Him, they said, "For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy; because You being a man, make yourself out to be God." It is true that He temporarily gave up some of His attributes when He took on human flesh, but He remained 100 percent God.

 Although the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are one, each has a different role.  In our Colossians passage, we see some of the roles of Jesus.  

* He was responsible for the creation of the heavens and the earth

* He was and is the head of the body; the universal church

* He  reconciled all things to Himself

During the Christmas season, our focus has been on the baby Jesus, but if that baby hadn't been God, who, when He was 33 years old, paid the penalty for our sins, He would have been just another baby, one among many.   Each of us should thank God every day for loving us to the point of being willing to come to earth to pay the penalty for our sins. This show of love opened the door for us to, by faith, join the Family of God and secure our place in heaven. PRAISE THE LORD!!!

 The first verse of the Christian song, "He Paid A Debt He Did Not Owe," says it all.

 "He paid a debt He did not owe, I owed a debt I could not pay 

 I needed someone to wash my sins away

 And now I sing a brand new song, amazing grace the whole day long  

 Christ Jesus paid a debt that I could never pay"

 «Jesús es la imagen del Dios invisible, porque por él fueron creadas todas las cosas, tanto en los cielos como en la tierra. Él es también la cabeza del cuerpo, que es la iglesia, porque Dios quiso que en él habitara toda la plenitud y que por medio de él reconciliara consigo todas las cosas».  A lo largo del Nuevo Testamento, se hace referencia a Jesús como el «Hijo de Dios». Desde una perspectiva humana, esto suena como una posición inferior a la de Dios Padre. Una de las proclamaciones más claras de que Jesús era y es Dios se encuentra en Juan 10:30-33. En el versículo 30, Jesús afirma: «Yo y el Padre somos uno».  Algunas personas religiosas creen que era como Dios, pero que no era Dios, y que cuando dijo: «Yo y el Padre somos uno», se refería a uno en espíritu. Sabemos que esta opinión es falsa porque, en los versículos 31-33, vemos que las personas que le escuchaban sabían exactamente lo que estaba diciendo.  Lo sabemos porque tomaron piedras para apedrearlo. Cuando les preguntó por qué querían apedrearlo, le respondieron: «No te apedreamos por ninguna obra buena, sino por blasfemia; porque siendo hombre, te haces pasar por Dios». Es cierto que renunció temporalmente a algunos de sus atributos cuando se hizo carne, pero siguió siendo 100 % Dios.

 Aunque el Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo son uno, cada uno tiene un papel diferente.  En nuestro pasaje de Colosenses, vemos algunos de los papeles de Jesús.

* Él fue responsable de la creación de los cielos y la tierra.

* Él era y es la cabeza del cuerpo, la iglesia universal.

* Él reconcilió todas las cosas consigo mismo.

Durante la temporada navideña, nos hemos centrado en el niño Jesús, pero si ese niño no hubiera sido Dios, quien, a los 33 años, pagó el castigo por nuestros pecados, habría sido solo otro niño más, uno entre muchos.   Cada uno de nosotros debería dar gracias a Dios cada día por amarnos hasta el punto de estar dispuesto a venir a la tierra para pagar el precio de nuestros pecados. Esta muestra de amor nos abrió la puerta para, por la fe, unirnos a la Familia de Dios y asegurar nuestro lugar en el cielo. ¡ALABADO SEA EL SEÑOR!

 El primer verso de la canción cristiana «He Paid A Debt He Did Not Owe» (Pagó una deuda que no le correspondía) lo dice todo.

 «Él pagó una deuda que no debía, yo tenía una deuda que no podía pagar

Necesitaba a alguien que lavara mis pecados

Y ahora canto una nueva canción, gracia maravillosa todo el día  

Cristo Jesús pagó una deuda que yo nunca podría pagar»
