Advent | The Coming Savior - 1 Timothy 1:15-17 - December 30, 2025

 Our garages may still be full of just-in-case-we-need-them Amazon boxes and bubbled envelopes, but with Christmas done, we have a final Advent note from Paul to ease us into 2026. Here are the verses we’re unpacking with key phrases underscored. It’s a simple message, but profound enough that we should recall it daily.

 15a  The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance,

15b that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, 

15c of whom I am the foremost.

16a  But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost,

16b Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience

16c as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.

17  To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

 Experts agree that Paul is giving Timothy further instructions about false teachers in Ephesus. But Paul, being Paul, packs his letter with gobs of practical theology.

 In these verses, Paul assembles a simple piece of logical rhetoric that unpacks to read, Jesus came to save sinners. Among them, I’m one of the worst, but he demonstrated how, if he is willing to save even me, that no one is beyond his grace.

 There are plenty of details we could explore, including how likely it was that some in Ephesus were trying to seize leadership by teaching rules that were not from God. Paul demonstrated how accessible salvation is and how additional rules aren’t needed.

 More could be written about this, but we, the writers of these devotional essays, have asked for a lot of your time in 2025 (of whom I am the foremost), so I promised myself to keep this closing essay very short. That said, I’ll leave you with this.

 Many of us are going to arrive in Heaven tired, scratched, and bruised from sins we failed to control. All the extra packaging of how we tried to run our lives may improve our degree of sanctification, but ARRIVE WE WILL, because his salvation is that absolute.

 Puede que nuestros garajes sigan llenos de cajas de Amazon y sobres acolchados por si acaso los necesitamos, pero ahora que ha pasado la Navidad, tenemos una última nota de Adviento de Pablo para ayudarnos a entrar en 2026. Aquí están los versículos que vamos a analizar con las frases clave subrayadas. Es un mensaje sencillo, pero lo suficientemente profundo como para que lo recordemos a diario.

 15a  Esta palabra es digna de confianza y merece ser aceptada por completo:

15b Cristo Jesús vino al mundo para salvar a los pecadores,

15c de los cuales yo soy el primero.

16a  Pero recibí misericordia por esta razón, para que en mí, como el primero,

16b Jesucristo pudiera mostrar su perfecta paciencia

 Los expertos coinciden en que Pablo está dando a Timoteo más instrucciones sobre los falsos maestros de Éfeso. Pero Pablo, siendo Pablo, llena su carta con montones de teología práctica.

 En estos versículos, Pablo elabora una sencilla retórica lógica que se desglosa para leer: Jesús vino a salvar a los pecadores. Entre ellos, yo soy uno de los peores, pero él demostró cómo, si está dispuesto a salvar incluso a mí, nadie está más allá de su gracia.

 Hay muchos detalles que podríamos explorar, incluyendo lo probable que era que algunos en Éfeso estuvieran tratando de hacerse con el liderazgo enseñando reglas que no provenían de Dios. Pablo demostró lo accesible que es la salvación y cómo no se necesitan reglas adicionales.
