Connect with God - Romans 15:4 - January 4, 2026

 Endurance is a key component of the Christian life, and it involves patience as well as perseverance. Patience is the ability to wait on God’s timing no matter how out of sync with my expectations it might seem. I think of Joseph and the dreams that God gave him at 17 years of age. What 17-year-old doesn’t think that the fulfillment of what has been envisioned during the night will happen today, or tomorrow at the latest? But Joseph waited 14 years for God’s revealed vision for his life to begin to be fulfilled. During that time, he was faithful, even while the circumstances were less than ideal and at times absolutely contrary to what seemed reasonable and logical. Perseverance is the effort to continue being and doing what God has called me to be and do in anticipation of what God will do and how He will move in my life and circumstances. Joseph lived that out and is a great example to us today.

“Whatever was written in former days”, refers to the vast treasure of God breathed wisdom and instruction that we have at our disposal in the Bible. We would be fools to not heed the warnings and apply the prescriptions that God gives to us in His Word. Regardless of the immediate results that we may see or think we perceive, our LORD is the God of endurance and encouragement! We should not grow weary in doing well (1 Cor 15:58).

In 1 Corinthinas 10 Paul writes to the believers to remind them of their ancestors. Verse 6 says, “Now these things took place as examples for us,”. In this case the example wasn’t a good one, “that we might not desire evil as they did.” God’s warning, and His assurance of provision in the midst of temptation (10:13) should be an encouragement to continue steadfast, immovable and always abounding in the work of the LORD!

In 2 Peter 1, God warns us about the danger of interpreting scripture to fit our desired need or outcome. The application of God’s word should not be subject to our human whims but rather be completely in agreement with His revealed will. 1:19 says, and we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention…knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. We cannot make the mistake of “adjusting” scripture to fit our desires or tendencies.

The word of God has power and is living and active (Heb 4:12) and God wants us to continually be exposed to His word so that we will be transformed into the likeness of Jesus Christ his Son. Are there areas of your life that you know need to be exposed to truth and “transformed (Rom 12:2) by the renewing of your mind”? That renewal will only come as we are completely submitted to His will and continually immersed in the wisdom of the Word of God.

This growth in our lives is reflected in our relationships with one another in the body of Christ. He has called us to work together for His honor and glory and to reach others that don't yet know Jesus. This relationship with one another should reflect His priorities and His example of not looking to please Himself. Living this out should cause us to experience God’s desire “that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Rom 15:6)

 La resistencia es un componente clave de la vida cristiana, e implica tanto paciencia como perseverancia. La paciencia es la capacidad de esperar el momento oportuno de Dios, sin importar cuán fuera de sintonía con mis expectativas pueda parecer. Pienso en José y en los sueños que Dios le dio a los 17 años. ¿Qué joven de 17 años no piensa que lo que ha visto en sueños durante la noche se cumplirá hoy, o mañana a más tardar? Pero José esperó 14 años para que la visión que Dios le había revelado para su vida comenzara a cumplirse. Durante ese tiempo, se mantuvo fiel, incluso cuando las circunstancias eran menos que ideales y, en ocasiones, absolutamente contrarias a lo que parecía razonable y lógico.

  La perseverancia es el esfuerzo por seguir siendo y haciendo lo que Dios me ha llamado a ser y a hacer, anticipándome a lo que Dios hará y cómo actuará en mi vida y en mis circunstancias. José vivió eso y es un gran ejemplo para nosotros hoy en día. «Todo lo que fue escrito en días pasados» se refiere al vasto tesoro de sabiduría e instrucción inspirada por Dios que tenemos a nuestra disposición en la Biblia. 

Seríamos necios si no prestáramos atención a las advertencias y aplicáramos las prescripciones que Dios nos da en Su Palabra. Independientemente de los resultados inmediatos que podamos ver o creer percibir, ¡nuestro Señor es el Dios de la perseverancia y el aliento! No debemos cansarnos de hacer el bien (1 Corintios 15:58).

 En 1 Corintios 10, Pablo escribe a los creyentes para recordarles a sus antepasados. El versículo 6 dice: «Ahora bien, estas cosas sucedieron como ejemplos para nosotros». En este caso, el ejemplo no fue bueno, «para que no deseemos el mal como ellos lo hicieron». La advertencia de Dios y Su garantía de provisión en medio de la tentación (10:13) deben ser un estímulo para continuar firmes, inamovibles y siempre abundantes en la obra del Señor.

 En 2 Pedro 1, Dios nos advierte sobre el peligro de interpretar las Escrituras para que se ajusten a nuestras necesidades o resultados deseados. La aplicación de la palabra de Dios no debe estar sujeta a nuestros caprichos humanos, sino que debe estar completamente de acuerdo con Su voluntad revelada. 1:19 dice: «Y tenemos la palabra profética más confirmada, a la cual hacéis bien en estar atentos... sabiendo primero esto, que ninguna profecía de la Escritura es de interpretación privada». No podemos cometer el error de «ajustar» las Escrituras para que se adapten a nuestros deseos o tendencias.

  La palabra de Dios tiene poder y es viva y eficaz (Hebreos 4:12), y Dios quiere que estemos continuamente expuestos a Su palabra para que seamos transformados a la semejanza de Jesucristo, su Hijo. ¿Hay áreas de tu vida que sabes que necesitan estar expuestas a la verdad y «transformadas (Ro 12:2) por la renovación de tu mente»? Esa renovación solo vendrá cuando nos sometamos completamente a Su voluntad y nos sumerjamos continuamente en la sabiduría de la Palabra de Dios.

  Este crecimiento en nuestras vidas se refleja en nuestras relaciones con los demás en el cuerpo de Cristo. Él nos ha llamado a trabajar juntos para su honor y gloria, y a alcanzar a otros que aún no conocen a Jesús. Esta relación entre nosotros debe reflejar sus prioridades y su ejemplo de no buscar complacerse a sí mismo. Vivir esto debe llevarnos a experimentar el deseo de Dios «para que juntos, con una sola voz, glorifiquen al Dios y Padre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo» (Romanos 15:6).
