The Book of Proverbs -Proverbs 12 - February 12, 2026

One who is righteous is a guide to his neighbor,

but the way of the wicked leads them astray.

Whoever is slothful will not roast his game,

but the diligent man will get precious wealth.

In the path of righteousness is life,

and in its pathway there is no death. 

Proverbs 12:26–28

My wife and I are in a season of life with our four-year-old son where we are constantly working with him to do "the right thing." Recently, in a battle of wills, I asked him in exasperation, "Why are you choosing the wrong path?" I also loosely quoted Acts 26:14 to him: "Why are you kicking against the goads?"

I felt a pang of conviction instantly. Our Heavenly Father, who wants what is best for us, is asking me the same question — yet He does it in love and without frustration. There are so many areas in life where we "kick against the goads" and get caught in a battle of wills. We think we know best, but God is warning us that "in the path of righteousness is life."

As we read through Proverbs 12 today, I was struck by another often-overlooked reality: "One who is righteous is a guide to his neighbor, but the way of the wicked leads them astray."

While we are responsible for our own lives, our actions have a direct impact on those around us. Notice this verse doesn't say, "One who is righteous is a guide to his neighbors, if he has neighbors he's close to." It also doesn't say, "One who is righteous is a guide to his carefully selected Facebook friends."

Our actions affect our witness—and, beyond that, actively guide those around us.

If you find yourself in a battle of wills against your Father this morning, remember that Proverbs 12 was written for you — and your neighbors need you.

"Those who overestimate their own inherent wisdom will never grasp an essential teaching of Proverbs — namely, that all people are in need of instruction. Our ability to make life decisions that demonstrate we are walking with the Lord is hindered by our desire to act independently. One of the main ways this concept is illustrated in Proverbs is by the repeated mention of people viewing their paths in a manner not reflective of reality. Being wise, or doing what is right, in one's own eyes without considering true wisdom is comparable to being a fool: The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice (Proverbs 12:15)."

Lord, thank You for Your wisdom. Please give me a proper view of my own life and my shortcomings. Help me to be completely dependent on You, and to listen to wise counsel. Give me an appetite for Your Scriptures. Amen.

Mi esposa y yo estamos en una etapa de la vida con nuestro hijo de cuatro años en la que trabajamos constantemente con él para que haga «lo correcto». Recientemente, en una batalla de voluntades, le pregunté exasperado: «¿Por qué eliges el camino equivocado?». También le cité libremente Hechos 26:14: «¿Por qué pateas contra los aguijones?».

Al instante sentí una punzada de convicción. Nuestro Padre Celestial, que quiere lo mejor para nosotros, me hace la misma pregunta, pero lo hace con amor y sin frustración. Hay muchas áreas en la vida en las que «pateamos contra los aguijones» y nos vemos envueltos en una batalla de voluntades. Creemos que sabemos lo que es mejor, pero Dios nos advierte que «en el camino de la justicia está la vida».

Al leer hoy Proverbios 12, me llamó la atención otra realidad que a menudo se pasa por alto: «El justo es guía para su prójimo, pero el camino de los impíos los desvía».

Si bien somos responsables de nuestras propias vidas, nuestras acciones tienen un impacto directo en quienes nos rodean. Fíjate que este versículo no dice: «El justo es guía para sus vecinos, si tiene vecinos cercanos». Tampoco dice: «El justo es guía para sus amigos de Facebook cuidadosamente seleccionados».

Nuestras acciones afectan nuestro testimonio y, más allá de eso, guían activamente a quienes nos rodean.

Si esta mañana te encuentras en una batalla de voluntades contra tu Padre, recuerda que Proverbios 12 fue escrito para ti, y que tus vecinos te necesitan.

«Aquellos que sobreestiman su propia sabiduría inherente nunca comprenderán una enseñanza esencial de Proverbios, a saber, que todas las personas necesitan instrucción. Nuestra capacidad para tomar decisiones en la vida que demuestren que estamos caminando con el Señor se ve obstaculizada por nuestro deseo de actuar de forma independiente. Una de las principales formas en que se ilustra este concepto en Proverbios es mediante la mención repetida de personas que ven sus caminos de una manera que no refleja la realidad. Ser sabio, o hacer lo correcto, a los propios ojos sin considerar la verdadera sabiduría es comparable a ser un necio: «El camino del necio es recto a sus propios ojos, pero el sabio escucha los consejos» (Proverbios 12:15).

Señor, gracias por tu sabiduría. Por favor, dame una visión adecuada de mi propia vida y de mis defectos. Ayúdame a depender completamente de ti y a escuchar los consejos sabios. Dame apetito por tus Escrituras. Amén.
