The Book of Proverbs - Proverbs 6 - February 6, 2026

 Proverbs 6:27-28 - Can a man carry fire next to his chest and his clothes not be burned?  Or can one walk on hot coals and his feet not be scorched?

 Hit reality TV-series Survivor has been on the air since the summer of 2000.  As I’m writing this, they are getting ready to premiere the 50th season in just a couple of weeks.  As a personal note, it is one of my all-time favorite shows.  On a national scale, it is amazing to hear how much it was talked about back when it first aired 25+ years ago.  On August 23, 2000 nearly 52 million people tuned in to watch the season 1 finale - 52 million!!  Everyone was talking about it.  This was the ‘water cooler’ talk that was prevalent in the world back then, whereas now, there isn’t as much shared viewing as everyone is spread across different streaming platforms.  One of the ‘water cooler’ moments of Survivor was in season 2, The Australian Outback, where Mike Skupin fell into his camp’s fire as he was tending to it.  He was hovering over the fire and the smoke was overwhelming, leading to him passing out and falling into the fire.  He was severely burned and needed to be airlifted from the game.  

 As I was reading through Proverbs 6, verses 27-28 stood out to me, as listed above.  Verse 27 asks the rhetorical question, ‘Can a man carry fire next to his chest and his clothes not be burned?’  The obvious answer is ‘Of course not!’  If one is carrying a fire, he is destined to be burned.  And in Survivor season 2, we saw the direct result of someone getting too close to the fire without proper precaution.  The point that this Proverb is making is that we can’t expect to get ‘too close’ to the line without going over it, and not be in severe danger.  In other words, our sinful natures tend to make excuses for getting as close to sin as possible and trying to remain righteous.  Proverbs warns us about this mindset.

 The truth is that there is great wisdom in avoiding the fire.  There is great wisdom in fleeing from the evil of this world.  We must not make friends with sin so as to fool ourselves into thinking we’re ‘strong enough’ to deal with it.  None of us are strong enough to overcome sin if we’re careless enough to continually put ourselves in tempting and compromising environments.  Our environments matter… they matter deeply.  Verse 29 goes on to say, ‘So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife; none who touches her will go unpunished.’

 If you struggle with lust, don’t scroll through the internet where you are more likely to come across tempting images.

 If you struggle with alcohol, don’t hang out at the bar every Friday night. 

 If you struggle with gossip, don’t always try to make small talk with others who you know struggle with that.

 If you struggle with bad language, perhaps re-evaluate the crowd you’re spending most of your time with.

 We are, in many ways, a product of our environment.  It’s not weakness to recognize this, it’s reality.  So, don’t try to carry fire and avoid being burned.  Don’t try to coddle your feet while running on hot coals.  Don’t try to get as close to the line as possible without crossing it.  Be wise.  Flee from temptation.  Pursue holiness.  Seek out holy and life-giving environments.  God is gracious through it all, even when we fail, but we have a responsibility to be wise and obedient in the midst of life.

 Proverbios 6:27-28 - ¿Puede un hombre llevar fuego junto a su pecho sin que se quemen sus vestiduras?  ¿O puede uno caminar sobre brasas sin que se le quemen los pies?

 La exitosa serie de telerrealidad Survivor lleva en antena desde el verano de 2000.  Mientras escribo esto, se están preparando para estrenar la temporada número 50 en solo un par de semanas.  A título personal, es uno de mis programas favoritos de todos los tiempos.  A escala nacional, es increíble escuchar lo mucho que se habló de él cuando se emitió por primera vez hace más de 25 años.  El 23 de agosto de 2000, casi 52 millones de personas sintonizaron para ver la final de la primera temporada, ¡52 millones! Todo el mundo hablaba de ello. Era el tema de conversación que predominaba en el mundo en aquel entonces, mientras que ahora no hay tanto visionado compartido, ya que todo el mundo está repartido en diferentes plataformas de streaming.  Uno de los momentos más comentados de Survivor fue en la segunda temporada, The Australian Outback, cuando Mike Skupin cayó en el fuego de su campamento mientras lo cuidaba. Estaba inclinado sobre el fuego y el humo era abrumador, lo que le hizo desmayarse y caer en el fuego. Sufrió quemaduras graves y tuvo que ser evacuado en helicóptero.

 Mientras leía Proverbios 6, me llamaron la atención los versículos 27-28, tal y como se ha mencionado anteriormente. El versículo 27 plantea la pregunta retórica: «¿Puede un hombre llevar fuego junto a su pecho sin que se quemen sus ropas?». La respuesta obvia es «¡Por supuesto que no!». Si alguien lleva fuego, está destinado a quemarse.  Y en la temporada 2 de Survivor, vimos el resultado directo de alguien que se acercó demasiado al fuego sin las precauciones adecuadas. Lo que este proverbio quiere decir es que no podemos esperar acercarnos «demasiado» a la línea sin cruzarla y no correr un grave peligro. En otras palabras, nuestra naturaleza pecaminosa tiende a poner excusas para acercarnos lo más posible al pecado y tratar de seguir siendo justos.  Proverbios nos advierte sobre esta mentalidad.

  La verdad es que hay una gran sabiduría en evitar el fuego. Hay una gran sabiduría en huir del mal de este mundo. No debemos hacernos amigos del pecado para engañarnos a nosotros mismos pensando que somos «lo suficientemente fuertes» para lidiar con él. Ninguno de nosotros es lo suficientemente fuerte para vencer el pecado si somos tan descuidados como para ponernos continuamente en entornos tentadores y comprometidos.  Nuestro entorno importa... importa profundamente. El versículo 29 continúa diciendo: «Así es el que se acuesta con la mujer de su prójimo; ninguno de los que la tocan quedará sin castigo».

 Si luchas contra la lujuria, no navegues por Internet, donde es más probable que te encuentres con imágenes tentadoras.

 Si luchas contra el alcohol, no pases todos los viernes por la noche en el bar.

Si luchas contra el chisme, no intentes siempre entablar conversaciones triviales con otras personas que sabes que luchan contra eso.

 Si luchas contra el lenguaje soez, tal vez debas reevaluar el grupo de personas con el que pasas la mayor parte de tu tiempo.

 En muchos sentidos, somos producto de nuestro entorno. Reconocerlo no es una debilidad, es la realidad. Por lo tanto, no intentes llevar fuego y evitar quemarte.  No intentes mimar tus pies mientras corres sobre brasas. No intentes acercarte lo más posible a la línea sin cruzarla. Sé prudente. Huye de la tentación. Busca la santidad. Busca entornos santos y vivificantes. Dios es misericordioso en todo, incluso cuando fallamos, pero tenemos la responsabilidad de ser prudentes y obedientes en medio de la vida.
