Practical Ways to Serve - Luke 10:25-37 - April 22, 2025 

Today, we have one of the most well-known stories in the New Testament: The Parable of the Good Samaritan. To briefly recap: A man was robbed, beaten, and left for dead by the side of the road. Both a priest and a Levite, men who would have been considered leaders of their communities, passed by and ignored the injured man. But when a Samaritan passed by, he not only stopped to check on the man but did some first aid, gave him a ride, cared for him through the night, and paid for him to be well cared for until he could return personally. 

I had the privilege of teaching this lesson in Sunday school a couple of years ago, and I remember asking the children to act it out. I got volunteers to be the injured man and the Samaritan right away. I even got volunteers to be the robbers, the innkeeper, and the donkey! But it was hard to get anyone to be willing to play the priest and the Levite. Even 5-year-olds want to be helpers and know that God wants us to serve!  

We are commanded to serve each other numerous times in scripture, but I particularly like how this instruction is phrased in 1 Peter 4:10: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” 

It doesn’t get much simpler than that. We are commanded to serve and given spiritual gifts to serve! If you don’t already know what your spiritual gifts there are some great, simple assessments you can take to give you an idea of what they might be.  

Whether or not you know your spiritual gifts, there are ways you can serve the body of Christ right there in your own home church. Are you an extrovert? There’s a service role for you. Love kids? Boy, do we have some amazing serving opportunities for you. Can you make a great cup of coffee? The coffee team is ready to meet you.  

And the most amazing part of service is what happens when we serve.  

When we serve others, we experience immense joy. I’m not someone who enjoys cleaning, but when I worked with my kids to remove spiderwebs and weeds from a local nonprofit for the last Hessel Serve Day, I was filled with the joy of the Lord. The pictures of me from that day have a ridiculously big smile! I had fun even though I am terrified of spiders!  

When we serve, there is also joy for those around us. When I come to church on a Sunday morning, I’m greeted by a smiling face, and I can’t help but smile back. I send my children into classes with teachers and helpers I know genuinely love Jesus and love my kids, and those servants bring me great joy! When you serve the body of Christ, you contribute to that joy.  

If you are not already serving on a team, I want you to carefully consider this question: What’s holding you back? There are ways for people of all ages, abilities, and giftings to serve! You can visit the Hessel Church website and look at some of the serve teams to see where you might want to get your feet wet.  

Father God, thank you for the parable of the Good Samaritan. Thank you for the opportunities you give us to serve you and the body of Christ, and thank you for the joy we receive when we serve. I pray for conviction for those who are not yet serving to begin. Help us all to be obedient to you and serve where you want us to, with joy in our hearts.

Formas prácticas de servir - Lucas 10:25-37 - 22 de abril de 2025 

Hoy tenemos una de las historias más conocidas del Nuevo Testamento: la parábola del buen samaritano. En resumen: Un hombre fue asaltado, golpeado y abandonado a morir al borde del camino. Tanto un sacerdote como un levita, hombres que se consideraban líderes de sus comunidades, pasaron por allí e ignoraron al herido. Pero cuando pasó un samaritano, no solo se detuvo para ver cómo estaba, sino que le prestó primeros auxilios, lo llevó en su carro, lo cuidó durante toda la noche y pagó para que lo atendieran bien hasta que él pudiera volver personalmente. 

Tuve el privilegio de enseñar esta lección en la escuela dominical hace un par de años, y recuerdo que pedí a los niños que la representaran. Enseguida conseguí voluntarios para hacer de hombre herido y de samaritano. ¡Incluso conseguí voluntarios para hacer de ladrones, posadero y burro! Pero fue difícil encontrar a alguien que quisiera hacer de sacerdote y levita. ¡Incluso los niños de cinco años quieren ser ayudantes y saben que Dios quiere que sirvamos! 

En las Escrituras se nos manda servirnos unos a otros en numerosas ocasiones, pero me gusta especialmente cómo se expresa esta instrucción en 1 Pedro 4:10: «Cada uno ponga al servicio de los demás el don que ha recibido, como buenos administradores de la multiforme gracia de Dios». 

No puede ser más sencillo. Se nos ordena servir y se nos dan dones espirituales para servir. Si aún no sabes cuáles son tus dones espirituales, hay algunas evaluaciones sencillas y estupendas que puedes hacer para tener una idea de cuáles pueden ser. 

Tanto si conoces tus dones espirituales como si no, hay formas de servir al cuerpo de Cristo en tu propia iglesia local. ¿Eres extrovertido? Hay un servicio para ti. ¿Te encantan los niños? Vaya, tenemos oportunidades increíbles para ti. ¿Sabes preparar un café delicioso? El equipo del café está listo para conocerte. Y lo más increíble del servicio es lo que ocurre cuando servimos. 

Cuando servimos a los demás, experimentamos una alegría inmensa. No soy una persona a la que le guste limpiar, pero cuando trabajé con mis hijos para quitar telarañas y malas hierbas de una organización sin ánimo de lucro local durante el último Hessel Serve Day, me llenó la alegría del Señor. ¡Las fotos que me hicieron ese día me muestran con una sonrisa ridículamente grande! ¡Me lo pasé muy bien a pesar de que me dan pánico las arañas! 

Cuando servimos, también hay alegría para los que nos rodean. Cuando voy a la iglesia los domingos por la mañana, me reciben con una sonrisa y no puedo evitar devolverla. Envío a mis hijos a clases con profesores y ayudantes que sé que aman sinceramente a Jesús y a mis hijos, ¡y esos servidores me llenan de alegría! Cuando sirves al cuerpo de Cristo, contribuyes a esa alegría. 

Si aún no estás sirviendo en un equipo, quiero que consideres cuidadosamente esta pregunta: ¿Qué te detiene? ¡Hay maneras de servir para personas de todas las edades, habilidades y dones! Padre Dios, gracias por la parábola del buen samaritano. Gracias por las oportunidades que nos das para servirte a ti y al cuerpo de Cristo, y gracias por la alegría que recibimos cuando servimos. Oro por la convicción de aquellos que aún no están sirviendo para que comiencen. Ayúdanos a todos a ser obedientes a ti y a servir donde tú quieres, con alegría en nuestros corazones.
