Practical Ways to Serve - 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 - April 26, 2025 

1 Corinthians 12:4-7 - 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 

Imagine for a moment a small garden bursting with life. As your eyes wander across various plants, one of them catches your eye- a small neglected plant tucked away in a forgotten corner. Its leaves are curled and browning at the edges, without water and care. On top of that, the stem is breaking and is leaning over to the side. You think, maybe it's too far gone, not worth the effort. But then, on second thought, you decide to give it a chance. You put a stick in the ground and gently tie the stem to it. You water it, tend to its soil, and give it sunlight and time. Weeks later, you return to find that same previously forgotten plant thriving twice its size, leaves outstretched and bearing fruit. All it needed was a little care to show its potential. 

It can be easy to say we value the gifts until the one with the gift has some blaring un-Christlike problems. Then suddenly, in the flesh, we wish the person had never volunteered in the first place. We then whisper behind their back about their major flaws and slowly push them to the corner of the garden. What they need is not complaining and gossiping but rebuking in love. They need someone who values them enough to rebuke them, help them overcome their flaws lovingly, and remind them that they can bear fruit abundantly. Paul says, "To EACH is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good." Not to some. We as a body should strive to take the time and effort to cultivate the gifts in every believer. 

In today's passage, we can see how God beautifully takes variety and difference and, instead of causing chaos, brings them into unity without sacrificing the individual. God wants his church to be a diverse body unified under the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 

Application: Encourage those who are serving and help them cultivate their gifts. If you are not serving, recognize that God has given every believer a manifestation of the spirit, and let that bring you to a place where you can use your gifts in service to the body of Christ. 

Father, we humbly come before you, asking you to help us recognize that we are different but that we have a common goal. Help us, in our differences, come together and be unified under your name. Help us see what gifts you have blessed us with. Help use these gifts to help your church. Help us not neglect what you have given us. Help us not neglect or suppress others' gifts. But let us celebrate our differences through the unified worship of your Son. Please help us humbly continue to rely on your Spirit for these gifts every day. In Jesus name, Amen.

1 Corintios 12:4-7 - 4 Ahora bien, hay diversidad de dones, pero el Espíritu es el mismo. 5 Hay diversidad de ministerios, pero el Señor es el mismo. 6 Hay diversidad de operaciones, pero Dios, que es el mismo, hace todas las cosas en todos. 7 A cada uno se le da la manifestación del Espíritu para el bien común. 

Imagina por un momento un pequeño jardín rebosante de vida. Mientras tus ojos se posan en las distintas plantas, una de ellas te llama la atención: una pequeña planta abandonada, escondida en un rincón olvidado. Sus hojas están rizadas y marrones en los bordes, sin agua ni cuidados. Además, el tallo se está rompiendo y se inclina hacia un lado. Pensáis que quizá esté demasiado deteriorada y que no vale la pena esforzarse. Pero luego, pensándolo mejor, decidís darle una oportunidad. Claváis un palo en la tierra y atáis suavemente el tallo a él. La regáis, cuidáis la tierra y le dais sol y tiempo. Semanas más tarde, volvéis y encontráis que esa misma planta olvidada ha crecido hasta duplicar su tamaño, con las hojas extendidas y dando frutos. Todo lo que necesitaba era un poco de cuidado para mostrar su potencial.

Es fácil decir que valoramos los dones hasta que la persona que los tiene muestra problemas evidentes que no son cristianos. Entonces, de repente, en persona, deseamos que esa persona nunca se hubiera ofrecido voluntaria. Luego, a sus espaldas, susurramos sobre sus defectos más importantes y poco a poco la empujamos hacia un rincón del jardín. Lo que necesita no son quejas y chismes, sino reprimendas con amor. Necesitan a alguien que los valore lo suficiente como para reprenderlos, ayudarlos a superar sus defectos con amor y recordarles que pueden dar frutos en abundancia. Pablo dice: «A CADA UNO se le da la manifestación del Espíritu para el bien común». No a algunos. Como cuerpo, debemos esforzarnos por dedicar tiempo y esfuerzo a cultivar los dones de cada creyente. 

En el pasaje de hoy, podemos ver cómo Dios toma maravillosamente la variedad y la diferencia y, en lugar de causar caos, las lleva a la unidad sin sacrificar al individuo. Dios quiere que su iglesia sea un cuerpo diverso unificado bajo el Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo. 

Aplicación: Anima a los que están sirviendo y ayúdalos a cultivar sus dones. Si no estás sirviendo, reconoce que Dios ha dado a cada creyente una manifestación del Espíritu, y deja que eso te lleve a un lugar donde puedas usar tus dones al servicio del cuerpo de Cristo. 

Padre, nos presentamos humildemente ante ti, pidiéndote que nos ayudes a reconocer que somos diferentes, pero que tenemos un objetivo común. Ayúdanos, en nuestras diferencias, a unirnos y estar unidos bajo tu nombre. Ayúdanos a ver los dones con los que nos has bendecido. Ayúdanos a usar estos dones para ayudar a tu iglesia. Ayúdanos a no descuidar lo que nos has dado. Ayúdanos a no descuidar ni reprimir los dones de los demás. Pero permítenos celebrar nuestras diferencias a través de la adoración unificada de tu Hijo. Por favor, ayúdanos a seguir confiando humildemente en tu Espíritu para recibir estos dones cada día. En el nombre de Jesús, Amén.
