Jesus’ Final Week - John 19:28-30 - April 26, 2026

28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), "I thirst." 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, "It is finished," and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Nothing beats ice-cold lemonade on a sweltering hot day.  Some friends of ours set up a lemonade stand outside our driveway during a weekend heat wave.   They made a small fortune!  The cute kids helped the sales, I'm sure.  

Have you ever noticed how when you are thirsty, you can't think about anything else except quenching that thirst? When David was in the wilderness, he wrote (in Psalm 63:1) "O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water." 

In today's verse, we see Jesus cry out, "I thirst!"  His thirst was mocked and met with a sponge full of vinegar. However, Jesus' thirst shows us three things. 

First, He had real physical human suffering. 

Second, He fulfilled scripture, such as Psalm 22, which says, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" and Psalm 69:20, "Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none. They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink."

And third, we observe Jesus's longing for us to be spiritually filled. We see this in John 4:13-14, where Jesus tells a woman at a well: "Whoever drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." And he says in John 6:35, "whoever believes in me shall never thirst."

The last words Jesus says are: "It is finished!" In Greek, the word Tetelestai literally means "paid in full."

Jesus took all the debt of our sins upon himself and once for all paid it all off. 

We have been given an incredible gift. Let's share the living water that Christ freely gives us with a thirsty world.

28 Después de esto, sabiendo Jesús que ya todo estaba consumado, dijo (para que se cumpliera la Escritura): «Tengo sed». 29 Había allí una vasija llena de vino agrio; así que empaparon una esponja en el vino agrio, la colocaron en una rama de hisopo y se la acercaron a la boca.

30 Cuando Jesús hubo tomado el vino agrio, dijo: «Todo está consumado», e inclinó la cabeza y entregó su espíritu.

No hay nada mejor que una limonada bien fría en un día de calor sofocante.  Unos amigos nuestros montaron un puesto de limonada frente a la entrada de nuestra casa durante una ola de calor de fin de semana.   ¡Ganaron una pequeña fortuna!  Seguro que los niños, tan monos, ayudaron a las ventas.

¿Alguna vez te has dado cuenta de que, cuando tienes sed, no puedes pensar en nada más que en saciar esa sed? Cuando David estaba en el desierto, escribió (en el Salmo 63:1): «Oh Dios, tú eres mi Dios, te busco con ahínco; mi alma tiene sed de ti, mi cuerpo te anhela, en una tierra seca y árida donde no hay agua».

En el versículo de hoy, vemos a Jesús clamar: «¡Tengo sed!».  Su sed fue objeto de burlas y se le respondió con una esponja empapada en vinagre. Sin embargo, la sed de Jesús nos muestra tres cosas.

En primer lugar, Él sufrió un verdadero sufrimiento físico humano.

Segundo, cumplió las Escrituras, como el Salmo 22, que dice: «Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has abandonado?» y el Salmo 69:20: «Los reproches me han quebrantado el corazón, y estoy desesperado. Busqué compasión, pero no la encontré; busqué consoladores, pero no los hallé. Me dieron veneno por comida, y para mi sed me dieron a beber vino agrio».

Y en tercer lugar, observamos el anhelo de Jesús de que seamos saciados espiritualmente. Lo vemos en Juan 4:13-14, donde Jesús le dice a una mujer junto al pozo: «Quienquiera que beba de esta agua volverá a tener sed, pero quien beba del agua que yo le daré nunca más tendrá sed. El agua que yo le daré se convertirá en él en un manantial de agua que brota para vida eterna». Y dice en Juan 6:35: «El que cree en mí nunca tendrá sed.»

Las últimas palabras que pronuncia Jesús son: «¡Consumado es!». En griego, la palabra Tetelestai significa literalmente «pagado en su totalidad».

Jesús tomó sobre sí toda la deuda de nuestros pecados y la pagó de una vez por todas.

Se nos ha concedido un regalo increíble. Compartamos el agua viva que Cristo nos da gratuitamente con un mundo sediento.
