Jesus’ Final Week - Matthew 27:57-66 - April 27, 2026
Matthew 27 tells us that in hatred and harshness, Jesus was tortured and crucified. At the moment He died, total access to God was granted as the Father tore the curtain of the temple from top to bottom! That curtain had always been the undeniable symbol of separation from God. Only the high priest was allowed to pass beyond that curtain, and then only one time each year! As Jesus’ death opened the way for us to approach God, God Himself tore the curtain from top to bottom. The earth shook; people were terrified, some of them probably connected Jesus’ death with these happenings. The Centurion who was on crucifixion duty exclaimed the truth: “Surely, this was the Son of God!”
In tenderness, kindness, and love, Jesus was buried. Joseph, the wealthy Arimathean, was “a good and upright man, a member of the Council who had not consented to their decision and action regarding Jesus”. He was devoutly awaiting “the Kingdom of God” (Luke 15:50-54). He put his own life in danger by associating himself with Jesus. He asked for Jesus’ body so he could prepare it appropriately for burial and place it within his own tomb. This fulfilled a prophecy in Isa. 53:9: “He was assigned a grave… with the rich in his death.” Mary Magdalene and “the other Mary” noted Joseph’s grave, so they knew where to return after the Sabbath, to anoint His body with appropriate oils and herbs for burial.
The murdering chief priests and Pharisees remembered Jesus’ declaration, “After three days I will rise again”. They became nervous and did all they could to seal the tomb and keep Jesus IN. Of course, when the time was right, He (or the angels with Him) rolled the heavy, sealing stone away – NOT to let Jesus OUT, but to let us IN – so all of us could see He had risen from the dead!! He appeared to many over the next several days, promised He would return at the appointed time, and then returned to heaven!! Hallelujah!!

Mateo 27 nos cuenta que, en medio del odio y la crueldad, Jesús fue torturado y crucificado. En el momento en que murió, se abrió por completo el acceso a Dios, ¡pues el Padre rasgó el velo del templo de arriba abajo! Ese velo siempre había sido el símbolo indiscutible de la separación de Dios. Solo al sumo sacerdote se le permitía pasar más allá de ese velo, ¡y solo una vez al año! Cuando la muerte de Jesús nos abrió el camino para acercarnos a Dios, Dios mismo rasgó el velo de arriba abajo. La tierra tembló; la gente estaba aterrorizada, y algunos de ellos probablemente relacionaron la muerte de Jesús con estos acontecimientos. El centurión que estaba a cargo de la crucifixión exclamó la verdad: «¡Verdaderamente, este era el Hijo de Dios!»
Con ternura, bondad y amor, Jesús fue sepultado. José, el rico de Arimatea, era «un hombre bueno y justo, miembro del Consejo que no había consentido en la decisión y la acción de los demás respecto a Jesús». Esperaba con devoción «el Reino de Dios» (Lucas 15:50-54). Puso su propia vida en peligro al asociarse con Jesús. Pidió el cuerpo de Jesús para poder prepararlo adecuadamente para el entierro y colocarlo en su propia tumba. Esto cumplió una profecía de Isaías 53:9: «Le asignaron una tumba… con los ricos en su muerte». María Magdalena y «la otra María» tomaron nota de la tumba de José, para saber adónde volver después del sábado, a ungir Su cuerpo con los aceites y hierbas apropiados para el entierro.
Los sumos sacerdotes y fariseos asesinos recordaron la declaración de Jesús: «Al tercer día resucitaré». Se pusieron nerviosos e hicieron todo lo posible por sellar la tumba y mantener a Jesús DENTRO. Por supuesto, cuando llegó el momento oportuno, Él (o los ángeles que le acompañaban) apartaron la pesada piedra que sellaba la entrada, NO para dejar salir a Jesús, sino para dejarnos entrar a nosotros, ¡para que todos pudiéramos ver que había resucitado de entre los muertos! Se apareció a muchos durante los días siguientes, prometió que volvería en el momento señalado y luego regresó al cielo. ¡Aleluya!
