Attributes of God - God is Creator - May 12, 2026

Genesis 1:1 - In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

Colossians 1:16 - For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities–all things were created through Him and for Him.

Today, we look at the simple, yet profound reality of God as our Creator.  We’ve already spent time meditating on the eternality and infinitude of God.  We’ve discovered His all-powerful hand and His sovereign nature.  So, with that in mind, we can properly fix our eyes on His work of Creation.  

Before the foundation of the world, God was.  He always has been.  He has never not existed.  We, on the other hand, have a beginning.  Our universe has a beginning.  That beginning is where we start to comprehend reality.  Our minds don’t really do well with thinking about things “before” time, or “apart from” matter or space.  And so, the doctrine of Creation shines forth.  

God spoke the world into existence by the word of His mouth.  In Genesis 1, we read all about everything that He made, and in chapter 2, we read more specifically about the creation of mankind.  As God’s creation, we are dependent on Him.  He is distinct from everything else.  We all, along with the whole of the universe, are contingent on God’s creative will.  If God didn’t want us here - we wouldn’t be here.  Isn’t it something wonderful that God does want us here.  

So, why did He create?  Why did He make the stars in the sky?  And the more difficult question - why did He create me?  There are many ways we can attack this question, and no devotional would be able to do it justice, but I want to point you to Colossians 1:16 for a clue.  “For by Him [Jesus] all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities–all things were created through Him and for Him.”

One of the most mind-boggling realities concerning the Trinity is that all three persons of God (Father, Son, Spirit) were active in the creation of the world.  The Spirit hovered over the face of the waters (Gen 1:2) giving life to the world.  And here, in Colossians, we see very clearly that through the Son did all things come into being.  But here’s the kicker - not only was everything created by and through Jesus - they were created FOR Him. 

Oh, doesn’t that expand our understanding of why we’re here?  Yes, God loves each of us dearly.  But there is something powerful in the fact that God made the world FOR Jesus.  How this all works together in the mind of God still remains a mystery beyond us.  However, when we realize that the creation of the world was more about God and glorifying Him and satisfying Himself than it even was about us - our perspective is helped.  We are here in relationship with God - as a part of His creation, valuable and dignified.  But we’re here FOR Jesus.  We’re not here for us.  We’re here for Him.  God is the Creator, so we, the creation, must worship Him with all that we have.

Génesis 1:1 – En el principio, Dios creó los cielos y la tierra.

Colosenses 1:16 – Porque en Él fueron creadas todas las cosas, tanto en los cielos como en la tierra, visibles e invisibles; ya sean tronos o dominios, poderes o autoridades; todo ha sido creado por medio de Él y para Él.

Hoy consideramos la realidad simple, pero profunda, de Dios como nuestro Creador. Ya hemos pasado tiempo meditando en la eternidad y la infinitud de Dios. Hemos descubierto Su mano todopoderosa y Su naturaleza soberana. Así que, con eso en mente, podemos fijar correctamente nuestros ojos en Su obra de creación.

Antes de la fundación del mundo, Dios era. Él siempre ha sido. Nunca ha dejado de existir. Nosotros, en cambio, tenemos un comienzo. Nuestro universo tiene un comienzo. Y ese comienzo es donde empezamos a comprender la realidad. Nuestras mentes no funcionan muy bien cuando tratamos de pensar en cosas “antes” del tiempo, o “aparte” de la materia o del espacio. Y por eso, la doctrina de la creación resplandece.

Dios habló, y el mundo llegó a existir por la palabra de Su boca. En Génesis 1 leemos acerca de todo lo que Él hizo, y en el capítulo 2 leemos más específicamente acerca de la creación de la humanidad. Como creación de Dios, dependemos de Él. Él es distinto de todo lo demás. Todos nosotros, junto con todo el universo, dependemos de la voluntad creadora de Dios. Si Dios no quisiera que estuviéramos aquí, no estaríamos aquí. ¿No es maravilloso saber que Dios sí quiere que estemos aquí?

Entonces, ¿por qué creó? ¿Por qué hizo las estrellas en el cielo? Y la pregunta más difícil: ¿por qué me creó a mí? Hay muchas maneras de abordar esta pregunta, y ningún devocional podría hacerle plena justicia, pero quiero llevarte a Colosenses 1:16 para encontrar una pista: “Porque en Él [Jesús] fueron creadas todas las cosas, tanto en los cielos como en la tierra, visibles e invisibles; ya sean tronos o dominios, poderes o autoridades; todo ha sido creado por medio de Él y para Él”.

Una de las realidades más asombrosas acerca de la Trinidad es que las tres personas de Dios —Padre, Hijo y Espíritu— estuvieron activas en la creación del mundo. El Espíritu se movía sobre la superficie de las aguas (Génesis 1:2), dando vida al mundo. Y aquí, en Colosenses, vemos con mucha claridad que por medio del Hijo todas las cosas llegaron a existir. Pero aquí está lo sorprendente: no solo todo fue creado por Jesús y por medio de Jesús, sino que todo fue creado para Él.

¿No amplía eso nuestra comprensión de por qué estamos aquí? Sí, Dios ama profundamente a cada uno de nosotros. Pero hay algo poderoso en el hecho de que Dios hizo el mundo para Jesús. Cómo funciona todo esto en la mente de Dios sigue siendo un misterio que está más allá de nosotros. Sin embargo, cuando nos damos cuenta de que la creación del mundo tenía más que ver con Dios, con glorificarlo y con satisfacer Su propio propósito, incluso más de lo que tenía que ver con nosotros, nuestra perspectiva se corrige. Estamos aquí en relación con Dios, como parte de Su creación, con valor y dignidad. Pero estamos aquí para Jesús. No estamos aquí para nosotros mismos. Estamos aquí para Él. Dios es el Creador, así que nosotros, Su creación, debemos adorarlo con todo lo que tenemos.
