Attributes of God - Self-Existence - May 1, 2026
Exodus 3:14 - God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’ And he said, ‘Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’
Have you ever been walking around your house and just all of a sudden noticed something for the first time? Perhaps you’ve lived in the same home for 30 years, and all of a sudden, you’re like, “Wait, has that heating vent always been there?” I would not describe myself as a particularly observant person - so this happens to me a lot. I regularly am amazed by things that appear to have been somewhere forever without me even recognizing them.
The first attribute of God for us to reflect upon is His “self-existence.” The truth is that there has never been a moment in time where God “was not.” He always has existed - and He exists independently of His creation. One of the pillars of our Christian worldview that distinguishes us from pantheists who believe that we are all part of the “oneness” of the universe is the Creator/creation distinction. God is absolutely separate from all that He has made, and always has been.
Our Bible passage to reflect upon today is from Exodus 3, where Moses interacts with God in the burning bush. After Moses asks what name God goes by, He answers: “I AM WHO I AM.” The Hebrew name is YHWH (or Yahweh). There are many different ramifications to our understanding of the name YHWH for God. However, undoubtedly, His self-existence is one of them. The word “YHWH” likely comes from the same Hebrew word meaning “to be.” Simply put, one of the clear implications of God using the name “YHWH” for Himself is that He simply exists. And, His existence is eternal.
In the context of Moses’ conversation with God in the bush, we can pull back an even deeper layer of meaning for the term “YHWH.” God tells Moses - “I exist,” which means not only that He has always existed, but that He will continue to exist AND that He will exist in a relationship of faithfulness to His people Israel.
So, for us, let us not simply think of God’s self-existence as a high and mighty theological idea - let us be reminded of God’s constant presence and faithfulness to us this very day, and into eternity. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Praise the Lord that He simply… is.

¿Alguna vez has estado paseando por tu casa y, de repente, te has fijado en algo por primera vez? Quizás hayas vivido en la misma casa durante 30 años y, de repente, pienses: «Un momento, ¿esa rejilla de la calefacción siempre ha estado ahí?». No me describiría como una persona especialmente observadora, así que esto me pasa a menudo. Con frecuencia me sorprenden cosas que parecen haber estado ahí desde siempre sin que yo me diera cuenta.
El primer atributo de Dios sobre el que debemos reflexionar es su «autoexistencia». La verdad es que nunca ha habido un momento en el tiempo en el que Dios «no existiera». Él siempre ha existido, y existe independientemente de su creación. Uno de los pilares de nuestra cosmovisión cristiana que nos distingue de los panteístas —que creen que todos formamos parte de la «unidad» del universo— es la distinción entre Creador y creación. Dios está absolutamente separado de todo lo que ha creado, y siempre lo ha estado.
El pasaje bíblico sobre el que reflexionaremos hoy es de Éxodo 3, donde Moisés interactúa con Dios en la zarza ardiente. Después de que Moisés le pregunta cómo se llama Dios, Él responde: «YO SOY EL QUE SOY». El nombre hebreo es YHWH (o Yahvé). Hay muchas ramificaciones diferentes en nuestra comprensión del nombre YHWH para Dios. Sin embargo, sin duda, Su existencia por sí mismo es una de ellas. La palabra «YHWH» probablemente proviene de la misma palabra hebrea que significa «ser». En pocas palabras, una de las implicaciones claras de que Dios utilice el nombre «YHWH» para referirse a Sí mismo es que Él simplemente existe. Y su existencia es eterna.
En el contexto de la conversación de Moisés con Dios en la zarza, podemos desentrañar un significado aún más profundo del término «YHWH». Dios le dice a Moisés: «Yo existo», lo que significa no solo que Él siempre ha existido, sino que seguirá existiendo Y que existirá en una relación de fidelidad con su pueblo Israel.
Por lo tanto, no pensemos simplemente en la autoexistencia de Dios como una idea teológica elevada y poderosa; recordemos la presencia constante de Dios y su fidelidad hacia nosotros hoy mismo, y hasta la eternidad. Dios es el mismo ayer, hoy y siempre. Alabado sea el Señor porque Él simplemente… es.
