Attributes of God - God is Truth - May 18, 2026

Numbers 23:19 - God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it?  Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it? 

If you were to ask me as a kid, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I would have told you, “I have no idea.”  I mean sure, just like a lot of other 10 year-old boys, my dream was to play professionally in the MLB.  However, I pretty quickly realized that the possibility of that happening was about as unlikely as getting to Mars.  I did spend some time thinking about becoming a professional baseball broadcaster for a while, but the passion faded over time.  After I graduated from Analy High School, I enrolled at the SRJC to pursue an associate degree in Economics - because it was the subject I enjoyed most in high school and seemed to be a “safe” start at a career.

All of my “plans” came to a sudden fork in the road after I was saved by the grace of God in the summer of 2019.  About a year after I became a Christian, I developed a love for God’s Word and wanted to study it formally.  So, I changed my mind.  I went a completely different route and pursued vocational ministry.  (That did not make my top 5… or top 500… possibilities for 10 year old Julian.)

There have been a number of times in my life where I’ve changed my mind.  I think one way - and the next thing I know I have completely flipped my opinion.  

Today’s text gets to the heart of this reality: God is Truth.  

He doesn’t just speak the truth; He is the truth.  It is in the very fabric of His being to be truthful.  So, not only does He never lie - He cannot lie.  Yes, that’s right.  There are some things that God cannot do.  This isn’t undermining His omnipotent power, it’s keeping His power consistent with His moral nature.  And not only can He never lie, He never even changes His mind.  Some of you Bible-nuts may have some passages swirling around your head right now where it very much appears that God changes His mind.  For example, in the Book of Jonah, we read that God was going to destroy the people of Nineveh, but, after they repented, He relented from bringing that destruction on them.  What Numbers 23:19 is getting at isn’t the fact that God doesn’t “change” the way He works in our lives and world.  He very much changes depending on our faith.  If that wasn’t the case, we would never have the opportunity to leave the road to hell and switch lanes to the road to heaven.  What the Numbers text really teaches us is that God is faithful and true to ALL of His promises… and they will never change.  He will never revoke a promise made to a beloved child.  He won’t save us from the fire one day only to leave us the next.  He is absolutely truthful - and that truthfulness means that He is absolutely faithful to finish what He started.

I didn’t “finish” the path I started at the SRJC.  But know this, Christian.  God will finish what He started in you.  His Word is absolutely true.  His promises are absolutely sure.  We can trust Him with our everything.  

So this morning - yield to God.  Hand over everything to Him knowing that He is truth.  Go to His Word by faith and ask Him to move in your heart and life.  The Gospel is good news, not only that we can place our faith in Christ for salvation, but that we can continually trust Him, day in and day out.  Praise the Lord!

Números 23:19 – Dios no es hombre, para que mienta,
ni hijo de hombre, para que se arrepienta.
¿Acaso Él ha dicho, y no lo hará?
¿Ha hablado, y no lo cumplirá?

Si cuando era niño me hubieras preguntado: “¿Qué quieres ser cuando seas grande?”, te habría respondido: “No tengo idea”. Claro, como muchos otros niños de 10 años, mi sueño era jugar profesionalmente en las Grandes Ligas. Sin embargo, muy pronto me di cuenta de que la posibilidad de que eso ocurriera era casi tan improbable como llegar a Marte. Durante un tiempo pensé en convertirme en narrador profesional de béisbol, pero esa pasión se fue apagando con el tiempo. Después de graduarme de Analy High School, me inscribí en el SRJC para estudiar una carrera técnica en Economía, porque era la materia que más disfrutaba en la preparatoria y parecía un comienzo “seguro” para una carrera.

Todos mis “planes” llegaron a una bifurcación repentina después de que fui salvado por la gracia de Dios en el verano de 2019. Aproximadamente un año después de convertirme en cristiano, desarrollé un amor por la Palabra de Dios y quise estudiarla formalmente. Así que cambié de opinión. Tomé una ruta completamente diferente y seguí el camino del ministerio vocacional. Eso no estaba entre mis cinco principales posibilidades… ni siquiera entre las primeras quinientas… para el Julian de 10 años.

Ha habido muchas veces en mi vida en las que he cambiado de opinión. Pienso de una manera, y de pronto me doy cuenta de que he cambiado completamente mi perspectiva.

El texto de hoy llega al corazón de esta realidad: Dios es Verdad.

Él no solo habla la verdad; Él es la verdad. Ser veraz forma parte de la esencia misma de Su ser. Por eso, no solo es que Dios nunca miente; es que no puede mentir. Sí, así es. Hay algunas cosas que Dios no puede hacer. Esto no debilita Su poder omnipotente; más bien mantiene Su poder en perfecta coherencia con Su naturaleza moral. Y no solo es incapaz de mentir, sino que ni siquiera cambia de parecer.

Algunos de ustedes, amantes de la Biblia, tal vez ya tengan en mente algunos pasajes donde parece que Dios cambia de parecer. Por ejemplo, en el libro de Jonás leemos que Dios iba a destruir al pueblo de Nínive, pero después de que ellos se arrepintieron, Él desistió de traer esa destrucción sobre ellos. Lo que Números 23:19 está enseñando no es que Dios no “cambie” la manera en que obra en nuestras vidas y en el mundo. Él sí actúa de manera distinta según nuestra fe. Si no fuera así, nunca tendríamos la oportunidad de dejar el camino al infierno y cambiar de carril hacia el camino al cielo.

Lo que el texto de Números realmente nos enseña es que Dios es fiel y verdadero a todas Sus promesas, y esas promesas nunca cambiarán. Él nunca revocará una promesa hecha a un hijo amado. No nos salvará del fuego un día para abandonarnos al siguiente. Él es absolutamente veraz, y esa veracidad significa que Él es absolutamente fiel para terminar lo que comenzó.

Yo no “terminé” el camino que empecé en el SRJC. Pero sabe esto, cristiano: Dios sí terminará lo que comenzó en ti. Su Palabra es absolutamente verdadera. Sus promesas son absolutamente seguras. Podemos confiarle todo.

Así que esta mañana, ríndete a Dios. Entrégale todo, sabiendo que Él es verdad. Acude a Su Palabra con fe y pídele que obre en tu corazón y en tu vida. El evangelio es buenas noticias, no solo porque podemos poner nuestra fe en Cristo para salvación, sino porque podemos seguir confiando en Él, día tras día. ¡Alabado sea el Señor!
