Attributes of God - God is Good - May 22, 2026

Sometimes the simple truths are the best, aren’t they?

I am a creative to my core, and I love all things art, music, poetry, books, movies, etc. I,

as someone who hasn’t always had the gift of expressing my emotions easily, have

always loved the act of expression through art; maybe that’s why I have always been

drawn to and loved the Psalms in the Bible. The beauty of poetry is that you can make

much out of nothing, use some flowery words and good imagery, and suddenly you’re Wordsworth; the other beautiful thing about poetry, though, is that it can also be simple and short to communicate a direct truth.

We see this in Psalm 119:68 where it says, “You are good and do good; teach me your statutes.” Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, but there’s something sweet about such a short and simple truth tucked in the stanzas of this Psalm. Even without the surrounding context, this passage would be true, but when we do look at the verses around verse 68, we see the Psalmist talking about being afflicted (v 67, 71) and talking about how it was a good thing for Him to have been afflicted so that He might know God better (His commandments, His Word, His statutes, etc.) and learn from the Psalmists own mistakes. This verse isn’t just by itself saying ‘when times are great, you are good, God!’, instead it is saying, when times are hard, when I am afflicted, when I go astray and you discipline me, when others attack me, etc., ‘you are good, and you do good’. If that isn’t a simple truth we need to remind ourselves of every day. God, you are good, and you do good.

When the money isn’t there? God, you are good, and you do good.

When the diagnosis comes? God, you are good, and you do good.

When someone you love hurts you or is far from God? God, you are good, and you do

good.

When the unthinkable situations come, or you lose a loved one? God, you are good, and you do good.

When the world seems chaotic, scary, and divisive? God, you are good, and you do good.

When I don’t know what to do, or why I’m where I’m at? God, you are good, and you do good.

It isn’t only a form of praise and thankfulness, it is a truth, and in a way, a promise. For God is unchanging and because He is unchanging, He will always be good and do good, even if we don’t understand His ways…but when we don’t understand His ways, let’s remember Isaiah 55:8-9 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

God, you are good, and you do good.

A veces las verdades simples son las mejores, ¿verdad?

Soy creativa hasta la médula, y amo todo lo relacionado con el arte, la música, la poesía, los libros, las películas, etc. Como alguien que no siempre ha tenido el don de expresar fácilmente sus emociones, siempre he amado el acto de expresarse por medio del arte. Tal vez por eso siempre me he sentido atraída a los Salmos de la Biblia y los he amado tanto. La belleza de la poesía es que puedes hacer mucho de casi nada, usar algunas palabras floridas y buenas imágenes, y de repente eres Wordsworth. Pero otra cosa hermosa de la poesía es que también puede ser sencilla y breve para comunicar una verdad directa.

Vemos esto en Salmo 119:68, donde dice: “Tú eres bueno y haces el bien; enséñame Tus estatutos”. Salmo 119 es el capítulo más largo de la Biblia, pero hay algo dulce en una verdad tan breve y sencilla escondida entre las estrofas de este salmo. Aun sin el contexto que la rodea, esta frase sería verdadera. Pero cuando miramos los versículos alrededor del versículo 68, vemos al salmista hablando de haber sido afligido (vv. 67, 71) y de cómo fue algo bueno para él haber sido afligido, para que pudiera conocer mejor a Dios —Sus mandamientos, Su Palabra, Sus estatutos— y aprender de sus propios errores.

Este versículo no está diciendo simplemente: “Cuando todo va bien, ¡Tú eres bueno, Dios!”. Más bien está diciendo: cuando los tiempos son difíciles, cuando soy afligido, cuando me desvío y Tú me disciplinas, cuando otros me atacan, etc., “Tú eres bueno y haces el bien”. Si hay una verdad sencilla que necesitamos recordarnos cada día, es esta: Dios, Tú eres bueno y haces el bien.

Cuando el dinero no alcanza: Dios, Tú eres bueno y haces el bien.

Cuando llega el diagnóstico: Dios, Tú eres bueno y haces el bien.

Cuando alguien que amas te lastima o está lejos de Dios: Dios, Tú eres bueno y haces el bien.

Cuando llegan situaciones impensables, o pierdes a un ser querido: Dios, Tú eres bueno y haces el bien.

Cuando el mundo parece caótico, aterrador y dividido: Dios, Tú eres bueno y haces el bien.

Cuando no sé qué hacer, o no entiendo por qué estoy donde estoy: Dios, Tú eres bueno y haces el bien.

No es solo una forma de alabanza y gratitud; es una verdad y, de cierta manera, una promesa. Porque Dios no cambia, y porque Él no cambia, siempre será bueno y hará el bien, aun cuando no entendamos Sus caminos. Pero cuando no entendamos Sus caminos, recordemos Isaías 55:8–9: “Porque Mis pensamientos no son los pensamientos de ustedes, ni sus caminos son Mis caminos —declara el Señor—. Porque como los cielos son más altos que la tierra, así Mis caminos son más altos que sus caminos, y Mis pensamientos más que sus pensamientos”.

Dios, Tú eres bueno y haces el bien.
