Attributes of God - God is Love - May 23, 2026

1 John 4:7-10 - Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Because God is love, we are called to love others sacrificially — even when it is difficult. We can outpour love to others because we have a father in heaven who IS love.  V. 7 - "...whoever loves has been born of God and knows God." Love is defined by God, and He is therefore the standard of what love is and what it looks like. V. 10- "In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins." (Propitiation = the act of appeasing or satisfying someone's wrath). God displayed His love by sending His own Son to die for us so that we could be made clean before Him. Loving others sacrificially is difficult, especially when we feel unseen, hurt, or unappreciated. Bitterness and resentment slowly convince us that others are undeserving of our love. Yet God loved us while we were still sinners, and His love continued moving toward us even when we withdrew from Him.

Love is not passive or permissive. Sometimes love requires correction, consistency, and healthy boundaries. Loving someone for their good may even require saying “no" or praying from a distance. Are we willing to let ourselves be loved, or are we making it harder for those around us? Are we exhausting them with refusals and stubbornness? I have people in my life who often say, ‘No, I don’t want to be a burden.’ Yet when we allow others into our hearts, our struggles, and our burdens, it creates opportunities for deeper love and connection.

I once heard a story about two women in an apartment building. One offered to help the other carry groceries upstairs. Later that week, the second woman accepted help carrying trash bags downstairs, despite being fully capable of doing it herself. Those small moments of receiving and giving help eventually grew into a friendship. Sometimes, allowing others to love and help us creates opportunities for deeper connection and community. When we let other people come into our lives and help carry our burdens, we allow them opportunities to love us. Sometimes receiving love creates opportunities for the giver to grow. Yes, it might inconvenience me to help you, but this is an opportunity for me to show you that I love you and to use my time and resources to do so deliberately. Receiving and giving love doesn't have to be a burden, but an opportunity.

Dear God, Help us to love others and to see how You ARE love and how You love us. Continue to show us examples of Your love and help us to take note of it. Then lead us to turn and love others like Christ loved us. Help us to love others wholeheartedly and to be intentional in our love. Help us to fight bitterness and resentment toward others, and heal any bitterness that already exists in our relationships. I pray that inauthentic love would be exposed and that our love would truly be an outpouring of Your love toward others in our lives. In your name, Amen.

1 Juan 4:7–10 – Amados, amémonos unos a otros, porque el amor es de Dios, y todo el que ama ha nacido de Dios y conoce a Dios. El que no ama no conoce a Dios, porque Dios es amor. En esto se manifestó el amor de Dios entre nosotros: en que Dios envió a Su Hijo unigénito al mundo, para que vivamos por medio de Él. En esto consiste el amor: no en que nosotros hayamos amado a Dios, sino en que Él nos amó a nosotros y envió a Su Hijo como propiciación por nuestros pecados.

Porque Dios es amor, somos llamados a amar a los demás de manera sacrificial, incluso cuando es difícil. Podemos derramar amor sobre otros porque tenemos un Padre en el cielo que es amor. El versículo 7 dice: “…todo el que ama ha nacido de Dios y conoce a Dios”. El amor es definido por Dios, y por lo tanto, Él es el estándar de lo que es el amor y de cómo se ve.

El versículo 10 dice: “En esto consiste el amor: no en que nosotros hayamos amado a Dios, sino en que Él nos amó a nosotros y envió a Su Hijo como propiciación por nuestros pecados”. Propiciación significa el acto de apaciguar o satisfacer la ira de alguien. Dios mostró Su amor al enviar a Su propio Hijo a morir por nosotros, para que pudiéramos ser limpiados delante de Él.

Amar a otros de manera sacrificial es difícil, especialmente cuando nos sentimos invisibles, heridos o poco apreciados. La amargura y el resentimiento lentamente nos convencen de que los demás no merecen nuestro amor. Sin embargo, Dios nos amó cuando todavía éramos pecadores, y Su amor siguió acercándose a nosotros incluso cuando nosotros nos alejábamos de Él.

El amor no es pasivo ni permisivo. A veces el amor requiere corrección, constancia y límites saludables. Amar a alguien para su bien incluso puede requerir decir “no” u orar desde la distancia. ¿Estamos dispuestos a dejarnos amar, o estamos haciendo que sea más difícil para quienes nos rodean? ¿Los estamos agotando con nuestras negativas y terquedad? Tengo personas en mi vida que a menudo dicen: “No, no quiero ser una carga”. Sin embargo, cuando permitimos que otros entren en nuestro corazón, en nuestras luchas y en nuestras cargas, se crean oportunidades para un amor y una conexión más profundos.

Una vez escuché una historia sobre dos mujeres en un edificio de apartamentos. Una ofreció ayudar a la otra a subir las bolsas del supermercado. Más tarde esa semana, la segunda mujer aceptó ayuda para bajar bolsas de basura, aunque era completamente capaz de hacerlo por sí misma. Esos pequeños momentos de recibir y dar ayuda eventualmente se convirtieron en una amistad. A veces, permitir que otros nos amen y nos ayuden crea oportunidades para una conexión y una comunidad más profundas.

Cuando dejamos que otras personas entren en nuestra vida y ayuden a llevar nuestras cargas, les damos oportunidades para amarnos. A veces recibir amor crea oportunidades para que quien lo da también crezca. Sí, puede ser una inconveniencia para mí ayudarte, pero también es una oportunidad para mostrarte que te amo y para usar mi tiempo y mis recursos de manera intencional. Recibir y dar amor no tiene que ser una carga, sino una oportunidad.

Querido Dios, ayúdanos a amar a los demás y a ver que Tú eres amor y cómo nos amas. Sigue mostrándonos ejemplos de Tu amor y ayúdanos a prestarles atención. Luego guíanos a amar a otros como Cristo nos amó. Ayúdanos a amar a los demás de todo corazón y a ser intencionales en nuestro amor. Ayúdanos a luchar contra la amargura y el resentimiento hacia otros, y sana cualquier amargura que ya exista en nuestras relaciones. Oro para que el amor falso sea expuesto y que nuestro amor sea verdaderamente un derramamiento de Tu amor hacia las personas en nuestra vida. En Tu nombre, amén.
