When times are tough, where does your heart run?
For King Saul, times had been tough for a long while. As we reach chapter twenty-eight of 1 Samuel, Saul was greatly afraid as the army of the Philistines approached. Once a courageous man of war, he was now trembling in fear. The Lord had already removed His Spirit from Saul (1 Samuel 16:14), and Samuel’s death had troubled him all the more. Saul had continually rebelled against God and rejected his ways, and he was now facing the consequences of his actions.
Verse 6 says, “And when Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD did not answer him, either by dreams, or by Urim, or by prophets.”
Can you believe that? Why would God refuse to answer Saul’s inquiry? Isn’t God always responsive to prayer?
Here’s the thing: God has no obligation to respond to “inquiries.” God is the almighty, sovereign Creator of the universe. While Scripture teaches us that God always hears the prayers of His people, Saul was in open rebellion against God, and he had cut off his relationship with God. After Saul inquires of the Lord, he turns to another means-a medium to conjure up a spirit from the dead. Clearly, this is against the will of God and perhaps proves that Saul’s heart in asking the Lord for help was in the wrong place altogether. Even though Saul himself had cut off the mediums and necromancers (v.9), he asks a medium from En-dor to conjure up Samuel from the dead. This only results in more pain and consequences for Saul, as it is reaffirmed that he has had the kingdom torn away from him (v. 17) and that Israel will be defeated by the Philistines (v. 19).
The tragic tale of the rise and fall of Saul serves as a helpful lesson for us today. While it is true that in this scenario, Saul initially turned to God, it was made clear that his motives were flawed, and he had no genuine relationship with God. Saul’s instinct was to use another method to get answers to his questions. He deliberately disobeyed God and sought answers from a medium. So, here’s the question for us all: When times are tough, where does your heart run?
When times are tough, will your heart turn to desperate, genuine prayer? Or will you turn to your own intelligence, strength, or other strategies?
My encouragement is that we all abide in Christ and depend on His Spirit in all situations. God is glorified when we trust in Him.

Para el rey Saúl, los tiempos habían sido difíciles durante mucho tiempo. Al llegar al capítulo veintiocho de 1 Samuel, Saúl estaba muy asustado ante la aproximación del ejército filisteo. El que una vez fue un valiente guerrero, ahora temblaba de miedo. El Señor ya le había quitado su Espíritu a Saúl (1 Samuel 16:14), y la muerte de Samuel lo había perturbado aún más. Saúl se había rebelado continuamente contra Dios y había rechazado sus caminos, y ahora enfrentaba las consecuencias de sus acciones.

Aunque las Escrituras nos enseñan que Dios siempre escucha las oraciones de su pueblo, Saúl se había rebelado abiertamente contra Dios y había roto su relación con Él. Después de consultar al Señor, Saúl recurre a otro medio: un médium para conjurar a un espíritu de entre los muertos. Claramente, esto va en contra de la voluntad de Dios y tal vez demuestra que el corazón de Saúl al pedir ayuda al Señor estaba completamente equivocado. Aunque el propio Saúl había eliminado a los médiums y a los nigromantes (v. 9), pide a una médium de En-dor que invoque a Samuel de entre los muertos. Esto solo le causa más dolor y consecuencias a Saúl, ya que se reafirma que le ha sido arrebatado el reino (v. 17) y que Israel será derrotado por los filisteos (v. 19).
La trágica historia del ascenso y la caída de Saúl nos sirve de lección útil para hoy. Si bien es cierto que, en este escenario, Saúl recurrió inicialmente a Dios, quedó claro que sus motivos eran erróneos y que no tenía una relación genuina con Dios. El instinto de Saúl fue utilizar otro método para obtener respuestas a sus preguntas. Desobedeció deliberadamente a Dios y buscó respuestas en una médium. Así que, aquí está la pregunta para todos nosotros: Cuando los tiempos son difíciles, ¿hacia dónde corre tu corazón?
Cuando los tiempos son difíciles, ¿tu corazón se vuelve hacia la oración desesperada y genuina? ¿O recurres a tu propia inteligencia, fuerza u otras estrategias?
Mi aliento es que todos permanezcamos en Cristo y dependamos de Su Espíritu en todas las situaciones. Dios es glorificado cuando confiamos en Él.
