Attributes of God - God is Our Shepherd- May 29, 2026
Psalm 23:1-3 - The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
There are few passages of Scripture that the Church at large knows better than the 23rd Psalm. There is something so poetic, so powerful, about the simplicity of the imagery that David employs in this Psalm. Our minds are immediately turned to meditate on a peaceful field, a calming river stream, and a contentment that we cannot explain. Isn’t it amazing that mere words have this much power? (Maybe that’s why God chose to reveal Himself to us in this form; the Bible.)
As we near the end of the month of May and the study of God’s attributes, we look today at one of His roles. He is our shepherd. There is so much packed into that simple statement that one daily devotion cannot begin to unfold. However, I want to simply spend some time with the first three verses of this song and help guide you as you worship your shepherd.
Because the Lord is my shepherd…
I shall not want. Put another way: I lack nothing. I have everything I need. Because God cares for me as a sheep of His pasture, I have no needs that go unmet. There is no longing of my heart that He cannot fill. I can say with Paul, “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned, in whatever situation I am, to be content. (HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE - because the Lord is my shepherd.) I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.” (Philippians 4:11-12)
I lie down in green pastures. Charles Spurgeon comments, “What are these ‘green pastures’ but the Scriptures of truth–always fresh, always rich, and never exhausted? There is no fear of biting the bare ground where the grass is long enough for the flock to lie down in it. Sweet and full are the doctrines of the gospel; fit food for souls, as tender grass is natural nutriment for sheep.”
I am beside still waters. I am filled with the Living Water of the Holy Spirit. He fills and empowers me to live in light of Christ and for Christ. I have in me a well springing up into eternal life. I am satisfied - and will never thirst. Because God is my shepherd, I am taken care of.
My soul has been restored. While my sin damages my soul near to death, the power of the Good Shepherd brings my soul back to be reconciled to Him. I did nothing for this - my shepherd has done it all. I am simply a recipient of His work and merit. I did not earn it, but He has shown me the grace that I never knew I needed.
I am on the path of righteousness. This is certainly my shepherd’s doing and not my own. Apart from Him, I can do nothing. Away from Him, I am on the wide path to destruction. But because He is my shepherd, my feet have been planted firmly on the path of righteousness. He keeps my foot from stumbling by His grace and power.
He does all of this for “his name’s sake.” Let our lives, as good sheep, glorify our Good Shepherd.

Salmo 23:1–3 – El Señor es mi pastor; nada me faltará.
En lugares de verdes pastos me hace descansar;
junto a aguas de reposo me conduce.
Él restaura mi alma;
me guía por sendas de justicia por amor de Su nombre.
Hay pocos pasajes de la Escritura que la Iglesia en general conozca mejor que el Salmo 23. Hay algo tan poético y tan poderoso en la sencillez de las imágenes que David emplea en este salmo. Nuestra mente es llevada de inmediato a meditar en un campo tranquilo, un arroyo sereno y una satisfacción que no podemos explicar. ¿No es asombroso que las simples palabras tengan tanto poder? Tal vez por eso Dios escogió revelarse a nosotros de esta manera: por medio de Su Palabra, la Biblia.
Al acercarnos al final del mes de mayo y del estudio de los atributos de Dios, hoy miramos uno de Sus roles. Él es nuestro Pastor. Hay tanto contenido en esa simple declaración que un devocional diario no podría comenzar a explicarlo todo. Sin embargo, quiero simplemente pasar un tiempo con los primeros tres versículos de este canto y ayudarte a adorar a tu Pastor.
Porque el Señor es mi Pastor…
Nada me faltará. Dicho de otra manera: no me falta nada. Tengo todo lo que necesito. Porque Dios cuida de mí como una oveja de Su prado, no hay necesidad mía que quede sin suplir. No hay anhelo de mi corazón que Él no pueda llenar. Puedo decir con Pablo: “No que hable porque tenga escasez, pues he aprendido a contentarme, cualquiera que sea mi situación”. ¿Cómo es eso posible? Porque el Señor es mi Pastor. “Sé vivir en pobreza, y sé vivir en prosperidad. En todo y por todo he aprendido el secreto, tanto de estar saciado como de tener hambre, de tener abundancia como de sufrir necesidad” (Filipenses 4:11–12).
Descanso en verdes pastos. Charles Spurgeon comenta: “¿Qué son estos ‘verdes pastos’ sino las Escrituras de verdad: siempre frescas, siempre ricas y nunca agotadas? No hay temor de morder la tierra desnuda donde la hierba es lo suficientemente larga como para que el rebaño se acueste en ella. Dulces y plenas son las doctrinas del evangelio; alimento adecuado para las almas, así como la hierba tierna es alimento natural para las ovejas”.
Estoy junto a aguas de reposo. Soy lleno del Agua Viva del Espíritu Santo. Él me llena y me capacita para vivir a la luz de Cristo y para Cristo. Tengo dentro de mí una fuente que brota para vida eterna. Estoy satisfecho, y nunca tendré sed. Porque Dios es mi Pastor, soy cuidado.
Mi alma ha sido restaurada. Aunque mi pecado daña mi alma casi hasta la muerte, el poder del Buen Pastor trae mi alma de vuelta para ser reconciliada con Él. Yo no hice nada para lograr esto; mi Pastor lo ha hecho todo. Simplemente soy receptor de Su obra y de Su mérito. No lo gané, pero Él me ha mostrado la gracia que nunca supe cuánto necesitaba.
Estoy en la senda de justicia. Esto ciertamente es obra de mi Pastor y no mía. Separado de Él, nada puedo hacer. Lejos de Él, estoy en el camino ancho que lleva a la destrucción. Pero porque Él es mi Pastor, mis pies han sido plantados firmemente en la senda de justicia. Él guarda mi pie de tropezar por Su gracia y poder.
Él hace todo esto “por amor de Su nombre”. Que nuestras vidas, como buenas ovejas, glorifiquen a nuestro Buen Pastor.
