Daily Word of Encouragement 5.4.25 - Tina Dow

A Study in 1 Samuel - 1 Samuel 4 - May 4, 2025 

I love the Old Testament. The principles we can learn, and the applications we can make are so relevant to our lives today. God uses examples from the past to teach us today in very real and appropriate ways. 

The true story that we read in 1 Samuel chapter 4 is something we can all struggle with, going our own way and hoping God will bless our decisions without even asking if it’s His will. This chapter starts with the Israelites going out to fight the Philistines, but we don’t see them inquiring of the Lord first to see if this was a battle they should be fighting. And when they lose the battle, instead of going to the Lord and asking for His will, they decide to take the Ark of the Covenant (which symbolized God’s presence) and try again! It did not go well for them, and they lost 30,000 soldiers. We might then ask why the Israelites lost when they had the ark. 

“The Israelites had a lot to learn about God. He was bigger than the box, which symbolized His presence. They could not enhance their fortunes by trying to cart God around like a good luck charm. Having the ark didn’t mean God was on their side. The more important issue was whether they were on God’s side! In this case, God’s presence meant judgment rather than blessing.” (NIV Bible notes) 

How many times have I tried to make decisions without seeking God first, and when it goes poorly, I ask Him to help me when I haven’t even asked if that was something I should be doing in the first place?! God has been reminding me so much lately that I need to be God-reliant, not self-reliant. I need to ask God what He wants first and then ask for His guidance to help me live it out. I need to get on board with God’s plans, not the other way around. Like the Israelites, I can tend to forge ahead with my own plans and try to cart Him along, but God lovingly continues to teach me to rely on Him first and then move forward. And that I can’t put God in a box! 

I pray that the Holy Spirit will remind us to seek God first in every area of our lives and help us stay reliant on Him throughout.

Me encanta el Antiguo Testamento. Los principios que podemos aprender y las aplicaciones que podemos hacer son muy relevantes para nuestra vida actual. Dios utiliza ejemplos del pasado para enseñarnos hoy de una manera muy real y apropiada. 

La historia real que leemos en 1 Samuel, capítulo 4, es algo con lo que todos podemos luchar, seguir nuestro propio camino y esperar que Dios bendiga nuestras decisiones sin siquiera preguntar si es Su voluntad. Este capítulo comienza con los israelitas saliendo a luchar contra los filisteos, pero no vemos que consulten primero al Señor para saber si esta es una batalla que deben librar. Y cuando pierden la batalla, en lugar de acudir al Señor y pedirle su voluntad, deciden llevarse el Arca de la Alianza (que simbolizaba la presencia de Dios) y volver a intentarlo. No les salió bien y perdieron 30 000 soldados. Entonces podríamos preguntarnos por qué perdieron los israelitas si tenían el arca. 

«Los israelitas tenían mucho que aprender sobre Dios. Él era más grande que la caja, que simbolizaba Su presencia. No podían mejorar su suerte tratando de llevar a Dios de un lado a otro como un amuleto de la suerte. Tener el arca no significaba que Dios estuviera de su lado. ¡Lo más importante era si ellos estaban del lado de Dios! En este caso, la presencia de Dios significaba juicio en lugar de bendición». (Notas de la Biblia NVI) 

¿Cuántas veces he intentado tomar decisiones sin buscar primero a Dios, y cuando las cosas salen mal, le pido que me ayude sin siquiera haberle preguntado si era algo que debía hacer en primer lugar? Últimamente, Dios me ha estado recordando mucho que necesito confiar en Él, no en mí misma. Necesito preguntarle primero a Dios qué quiere y luego pedirle que me guíe para ayudarme a vivirlo. Necesito sumarme a los planes de Dios, no al revés. Al igual que los israelitas, tiendo a seguir adelante con mis propios planes y tratar de arrastrarlo conmigo, pero Dios, con amor, sigue enseñándome a confiar primero en Él y luego seguir adelante. ¡Y que no puedo meter a Dios en una caja! 

Rezo para que el Espíritu Santo nos recuerde que debemos buscar a Dios primero en todos los ámbitos de nuestra vida y nos ayude a seguir confiando en Él en todo momento.
