Attributes of God - God is Spirit- May 4, 2026

"But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." (John 4:23-24)

God is Spirit. Jesus makes this statement fully clothed in human flesh. Firmly planted on earth, He declares truth after having walked many miles and arriving tired and thirsty, full of the reality of human frailties. He has experienced this semi-desert climate and is speaking to a woman whose identity is completely wrapped up in her physical reality…limitations, restrictions, opposition, obstacles, relationships, and regrets. Jesus then says that He is the (26) Messiah, the God-sent anointed one. She has heard of Messiah and is hopeful that Messiah will clarify things, but in reality, she knows very little about His identity or nature. She is thirsty!

Those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth. Jesus accepted the worship of many different people (Mateo 2:11, John 9:38; 20:28) during his sojourn on earth, and he never discouraged or prohibited anyone from worshipping him in his physical earthly form. But the function of his body was meant for sacrifice, not for worship. Worship must be deeper than the physical realm and must focus on the fulfillment of God's design for a relationship with His creatures.

In the OT, we see the Spirit of God come upon individuals numerous times, enabling them to perform supernatural feats. But there is also an abiding presence that is unusual for that time and sets apart certain ones because of a "different spirit" exhibited in their lives. Foreign rulers recognized God's spirit. Pharaoh saw it when Joseph interpreted his dream. Pharaoh then appointed Joseph over all Egypt saying, "Can we find a man like this, in whom is the Spirit of God?" (Gen41:38). God declared that Caleb would enter the promised land because he possessed "a different spirit and has obeyed me fully." (Num14:24). During Darius' reign "this Daniel became distinguished above all the others… because an excellent spirit was in him". (Dan 6:3)

God has always emphasized the need for worship in spirit. It is a mindset that minimizes the physical world and highlights the existence of the unseen. God says that we cannot separate from His presence (Psalm 139:7). There is no place in the universe where we can separate from His presence. And His fingerprints are visible in every aspect of the micro and macro manifestations of His creation.

But our humanity tends to fight against recognition and submission to our Creator. Our physical efforts become the focus of our evaluation of our relationship with Him, while He seeks those who will worship in Spirit and in truth.

John 7:37-39 paints the reality of walking and worshipping in the Spirit. The feast of Tabernacles, which remembers the 40 years of dry desert wandering, is concluding, and Jesus invites all who are thirsty to come to him and drink. Then he makes a promise, "Whoever believes in me…out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. This he said about the Spirit."

Like the woman at the well, physical thirst is matched by a reality of spiritual parching. The Spirit of God invites us to drink deeply of His presence and to not settle for physical imitation.

Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.  1 Corinthians 2:12

«Pero llega la hora, y ya ha llegado, en que los verdaderos adoradores adorarán al Padre en espíritu y en verdad, pues el Padre busca a quienes le adoren así. Dios es espíritu, y quienes le adoran deben hacerlo en espíritu y en verdad.» (Juan 4:23-24)

Dios es Espíritu. Jesús hace esta declaración completamente revestido de carne humana. Firmemente arraigado en la tierra, proclama la verdad tras haber caminado muchos kilómetros y haber llegado cansado y sediento, lleno de la realidad de las debilidades humanas. Ha experimentado este clima semidesértico y está hablando con una mujer cuya identidad está completamente envuelta en su realidad física… limitaciones, restricciones, oposición, obstáculos, relaciones y remordimientos. Jesús dice entonces que Él es el (26) Mesías, el ungido enviado por Dios. Ella ha oído hablar del Mesías y tiene la esperanza de que Él aclare las cosas, pero en realidad sabe muy poco sobre su identidad o naturaleza. ¡Tiene sed!

Los que le adoran deben adorarle en espíritu y en verdad. Jesús aceptó la adoración de muchas personas diferentes (Mateo 2:11, Juan 9:38; 20:28) durante su estancia en la tierra, y nunca desanimó ni prohibió a nadie que lo adorara en su forma física terrenal. Pero la función de su cuerpo estaba destinada al sacrificio, no a la adoración. La adoración debe ser más profunda que el ámbito físico y debe centrarse en el cumplimiento del designio de Dios para una relación con sus criaturas.

En el Antiguo Testamento, vemos que el Espíritu de Dios desciende sobre personas en numerosas ocasiones, permitiéndoles realizar hazañas sobrenaturales. Pero también hay una presencia permanente que es inusual para aquella época y que distingue a ciertos individuos debido a un «espíritu diferente» que se manifiesta en sus vidas. Los gobernantes extranjeros reconocieron el espíritu de Dios. El faraón lo vio cuando José interpretó su sueño. El faraón nombró entonces a José gobernador de todo Egipto diciendo: «¿Podemos encontrar a un hombre como este, en quien está el Espíritu de Dios?» (Génesis 41:38). Dios declaró que Caleb entraría en la tierra prometida porque poseía «un espíritu diferente y me ha obedecido plenamente» (Núm. 14:24). Durante el reinado de Darío, «este Daniel se distinguió por encima de todos los demás… porque había en él un espíritu excelente» (Dan. 6:3)

. Dios siempre ha hecho hincapié en la necesidad de adorar en espíritu. Es una mentalidad que minimiza el mundo físico y destaca la existencia de lo invisible. Dios dice que no podemos separarnos de su presencia (Salmo 139:7). No hay lugar en el universo donde podamos separarnos de su presencia. Y sus huellas son visibles en cada aspecto de las manifestaciones micro y macro de su creación.

Pero nuestra humanidad tiende a luchar contra el reconocimiento y la sumisión a nuestro Creador. Nuestros esfuerzos físicos se convierten en el centro de nuestra evaluación de nuestra relación con Él, mientras que Él busca a aquellos que le adoren en espíritu y en verdad.

Juan 7:37-39 describe la realidad de caminar y adorar en el Espíritu. La fiesta de los Tabernáculos, que conmemora los 40 años de deambulación por el desierto árido, está llegando a su fin, y Jesús invita a todos los que tienen sed a que vengan a Él y beban. Luego hace una promesa: «El que cree en mí… de su interior brotarán ríos de agua viva. Esto dijo refiriéndose al Espíritu».

Al igual que la mujer en el pozo, la sed física va acompañada de una realidad de sed espiritual. El Espíritu de Dios nos invita a beber profundamente de su presencia y a no conformarnos con una imitación física.

Ahora bien, nosotros no hemos recibido el espíritu del mundo, sino el Espíritu que viene de Dios, para que podamos comprender las cosas que Dios nos ha dado gratuitamente.  1 Corintios 2:12
