Daily Word of Encouragement 6.29.26 - Cris Alfaro

Nehemiah 9:17 - “But You are a God of lavish forgiveness, Gracious and compassionate, Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness; And You did not forsake them.”

As we read these chapters, we see the people of Israel in a new revival after they come back from the land of their exile, and they are seeking the Lord. They started by reading from His Word and they rejoiced, celebrating with food and sanctifying that day to rejoice in hearing the words of the Law in their land after decades of silence.

After they publicly repent of their sin, we read a truthful summary of the history of Israel. Now this story is not just a recount of major events, but a recollection of pivotal points when God showed mercy, but Israel showed pride and disobedience; this was an honest history of God’s mercy and grace towards Israel, despite their stubbornness.

Reading this history reminded me of a time when I was preparing to preach a sermon. The pastor, who was discipling me and helping me prepare, asked me, “Cris, do you know the difference between grace and mercy?” I honestly did not know how to explain it. The two words can seem almost interchangeable, yet they carry distinct meanings, and Israel’s story highlights the difference. Simply put, mercy is not receiving what we deserve, while grace is receiving what we do not deserve.

In Israel’s story, we see a stubborn and disobedient people who deserved complete destruction, as implied in verse 31. Yet God consistently kept His promises and showed His lovingkindness despite their disobedience. His mercy spared them from destruction, and His grace gave them His covenant.

Let me ask you, what do you deserve and what has God given you? If I am being honest, I am a sinner that deserves eternal punishment and to never be in the presence of a perfectly Holy God, yet He gave me everlasting life through Jesus rescuing me and saving an undeserved place for me in His presence. The history of Israel is one of disobedience, mercy and grace; and that is also the story of us, repentant sinners.

So, how have you experienced God’s mercy and grace in your life?

Nehemías 9:17 – “Pero Tú eres un Dios de perdón abundante, clemente y compasivo, lento para la ira y abundante en misericordia; y no los abandonaste”.

Al leer estos capítulos, vemos al pueblo de Israel en un nuevo avivamiento después de regresar de la tierra de su exilio, y están buscando al Señor. Comenzaron leyendo Su Palabra y se regocijaron, celebrando con comida y apartando ese día como santo para alegrarse al escuchar las palabras de la Ley en su tierra después de décadas de silencio.

Después de arrepentirse públicamente de su pecado, leemos un resumen verdadero de la historia de Israel. Esta historia no es solo un recuento de acontecimientos importantes, sino una recordación de momentos decisivos en los que Dios mostró misericordia, pero Israel mostró orgullo y desobediencia. Esta fue una historia honesta de la misericordia y la gracia de Dios hacia Israel, a pesar de su terquedad.

Leer esta historia me recordó una ocasión en la que me estaba preparando para predicar un sermón. El pastor que me estaba discipulando y ayudando a prepararme me preguntó: “Cris, ¿sabes la diferencia entre gracia y misericordia?”. Honestamente, no sabía cómo explicarlo. Las dos palabras pueden parecer casi intercambiables, pero tienen significados distintos, y la historia de Israel resalta la diferencia. Dicho de manera sencilla, misericordia es no recibir lo que merecemos, mientras que gracia es recibir lo que no merecemos.

En la historia de Israel, vemos a un pueblo terco y desobediente que merecía destrucción completa, como se implica en el versículo 31. Sin embargo, Dios mantuvo constantemente Sus promesas y mostró Su misericordia a pesar de la desobediencia de ellos. Su misericordia los libró de la destrucción, y Su gracia les dio Su pacto.

Déjame preguntarte: ¿qué mereces y qué te ha dado Dios? Si soy honesto, soy un pecador que merece castigo eterno y no estar nunca en la presencia de un Dios perfectamente santo. Sin embargo, Él me dio vida eterna por medio de Jesús, quien me rescató y me guardó un lugar inmerecido en Su presencia. La historia de Israel es una historia de desobediencia, misericordia y gracia; y esa también es la historia de nosotros, pecadores arrepentidos.

Entonces, ¿cómo has experimentado la misericordia y la gracia de Dios en tu vida?
