Being a Healthy Christian - Colossians 3:1-4 - July 12, 2026
Colossians 3:1-4 - 1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
These verses remind us that one of the greatest battles we fight in this lifetime is the battle for our minds. Whether it's anxiety about the future, disappointment over the past, comparison on social media, or simply feeling overwhelmed, our thoughts have a powerful influence on our hearts. Paul doesn't tell us to ignore those struggles or pretend they don't exist. Instead, he points us to something greater: "Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth" (Colossians 3:2). As followers of Christ, it’s important that we remember our identity is not defined by our emotions, our failures, or even our hardest seasons. Our lives are "hidden with Christ in God," which means our security rests in Him, not in how we happen to feel today.
That's good news because feelings change, but Jesus never does. This doesn't mean Christians will never wrestle with anxiety, depression, or other mental health challenges. I grew up in a church culture that believed that mental health struggles were just a lack of spirituality, and all you needed to do was pray more. But then I became a parent of kids who struggle with mental health issues, and I watched them really pour into their faith and passionately seek the face of God, only to see their struggles not go away. I found it to be something much more complex than a mere “lack of spirituality.”
Friend, Scripture is full of faithful people who experienced deep emotional struggles, and God met them with compassion rather than condemnation. Colossians 3 invites us to continually lift our eyes to Christ, allowing His truth to shape our thinking more than our fears do. The more we fill our minds with who Jesus is and what He has promised, the more we find hope that reaches beyond today's circumstances. No matter what you're carrying, remember this: your struggle is real, but it is not your identity. Christ is your life, and because of Him, your future is filled with hope, peace, and the promise that one day every burden—including every struggle of the mind—will be made completely new.
