Being a Healthy Christian - Psalm 13 - July 14, 2026

Most of us have lived long enough to have experienced true distress or heartache.  This world we live in comes with struggle and suffering.  As we focus on emotional health, it is fitting that I can speak to this area since I have spent my career on this subject. Today I get to say the easy part, the hard part is living it out.  However, David gives us some pointers in this Psalm.  There are 4 truths I want to focus on from Psalm 13.

First, be open and honest with the Lord.  He knows your thoughts and feelings already, so be honest with him because then you are really being honest with yourself. We can hide or avoid our feelings which is not healthy, since you cannot hide from God you will only be hurting yourself.   Also, be open and honest to others.  Many psalms were meant to be read aloud with others.  David did not hide his feelings from God or others.

Second, when you are wrestling with your thoughts and feelings (v. 2), ask for an answer from the Lord.  As David says, “Look on me and answer, Lord my God.”

Third, trust in his unfailing love.  Despite David wrestling with his thoughts, having sorrow in his heart, and his foes rejoicing over him, he still trusts God.  I feel the turning point of this, and many psalms, is when David still trusts the Lord when he pours out his thoughts and feelings.  It is a theme with David.

Fourth, we should praise the Lord.  We should always praise the Lord, but it is hardest when you are upset and upset with Him.  Yet, David still goes on to sing praise to the Lord.

As mentioned before, it is not easy to come to the Lord with our emotional health.  In order to follow these truths we will need to come to Him when life is hard and continue praising Him during those times.
