Daily Word of Encouragement 7.22.26 - Ben Merilatt

Being a Healthy Christian - Hebrews 10:19-25 - July 22, 2026

Dearest Father, today we delight in the assurance we belong with you in your dwelling place as we struggle to work out the wonder of our adoption into your family. Help us train our eyes inner and outer to see your heart and will for us in this passage today. Amen.

Hebrews 10:19-22 - 19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh,  21  and since we have a great priest over the house of God,  22  let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

What is the writer saying here? Any Christian can access the intimate holy places of God with any kind of mannerism, from pedestrian nonchalance, desperation, or practiced piety?! Scandalous! In view of Christ as our priest of the house of God, we are called to respect and honor the esteem granted us in the invitation to know God in his personal space. Jesus as our high priest sets rules and expectations to respect and honor each other in humility, seeking closeness to God and thereby each other, authentic and open, “true-hearted.” Sprinkled clean from evil refers to the annual practice of sprinkling sacrificial blood. Living in a fallen world, investing in our relationship with Christ Jesus and our fellow believers is against the flow of the pervasive power and control narrative.

The sacrifice of passing pleasures, conveniences, life, and safety is often called for in exchange for choosing to spend our time, focus, and resources on Christ. What do you sacrifice to attend to your affection for God, his word, and fellow children? There are many, I’m sure. Each time I look around Hessel Church, I smile to myself inside to be part of such a body of believers that considers the trade for the kingdom of time, comfort, energy, and position so small a price to pay for the gain of Christ.

Hebrews 10:23-24 - 23  Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.  24  And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,  25  not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Don’t miss this. Without the death and ransom gift of life with God in Christ Jesus, the very author and creator of our very existence, we are marked as enemies of God. We stand as the very betrayers of all creation and powerless to stand the weight of our sinful conditions. Freed from this spiritually dead and hopeless fate, we are free to love. Moreover, we are compelled to stir up one another to capitalize on our new estate, and love with reciprocal abandon our brothers and sisters in faith without shame. Constrained to work out this curious restoration to more than we could imagine from hearts and minds clouded with fear of death and selfish ambition, even vain conceit.

Let’s meet together with the intention of heartening and reinforcing each other to live mindful of the fulfillment of our faith and hope as we approach each passing day. When Jesus is ever-present, God’s glory will so shine that the sun can retire from its role of illumination. How much of this encouragement do you see as yours, reader? What could you set aside today and let yourself muse on your place in the affections of your Father in heaven and the embrace of your Savior?

Ser un Cristiano Saludable – Hebreos 10:19–25 – 22 de julio de 2026

Amadísimo Padre, hoy nos deleitamos en la seguridad de que pertenecemos contigo en Tu morada, mientras luchamos por comprender la maravilla de nuestra adopción en Tu familia. Ayúdanos a entrenar nuestros ojos, interiores y exteriores, para ver Tu corazón y Tu voluntad para nosotros en este pasaje hoy. Amén.

Hebreos 10:19–22 – Por tanto, hermanos, puesto que tenemos confianza para entrar en los lugares santos por la sangre de Jesús, por el camino nuevo y vivo que Él abrió para nosotros a través del velo, es decir, por medio de Su carne, y puesto que tenemos un gran sacerdote sobre la casa de Dios, acerquémonos con corazón sincero, en plena certidumbre de fe, teniendo nuestros corazones purificados de mala conciencia y nuestros cuerpos lavados con agua pura.

¿Qué está diciendo el autor aquí? ¿Que cualquier cristiano puede acceder a los lugares santos e íntimos de Dios con cualquier tipo de actitud, desde una indiferencia casual, desesperación o piedad practicada? ¡Escandaloso! A la luz de Cristo como nuestro sacerdote sobre la casa de Dios, somos llamados a respetar y honrar la estima que se nos concede en la invitación a conocer a Dios en Su espacio personal. Jesús, como nuestro Sumo Sacerdote, establece reglas y expectativas para respetarnos y honrarnos unos a otros con humildad, buscando cercanía con Dios y, por lo tanto, unos con otros, siendo auténticos y abiertos, “de corazón sincero”. Ser purificados de lo malo se refiere a la práctica anual de rociar la sangre sacrificial. Al vivir en un mundo caído, invertir en nuestra relación con Cristo Jesús y con nuestros hermanos creyentes va en contra de la corriente de la narrativa dominante de poder y control.

El sacrificio de placeres pasajeros, comodidades, vida y seguridad a menudo se nos pide a cambio de escoger dedicar nuestro tiempo, enfoque y recursos a Cristo. ¿Qué sacrificas para atender tu afecto por Dios, Su Palabra y Sus hijos? Estoy seguro de que hay muchas cosas. Cada vez que miro alrededor de Hessel Church, sonrío por dentro al ser parte de un cuerpo de creyentes que considera que el intercambio de tiempo, comodidad, energía y posición por el reino es un precio tan pequeño a pagar por ganar a Cristo.

Hebreos 10:23–25 – Mantengamos firme, sin fluctuar, la confesión de nuestra esperanza, porque fiel es el que prometió. Y consideremos cómo estimularnos unos a otros al amor y a las buenas obras, no dejando de congregarnos, como algunos tienen por costumbre, sino animándonos unos a otros, y mucho más al ver que el Día se acerca.

No te pierdas esto. Sin la muerte y el regalo redentor de la vida con Dios en Cristo Jesús, el mismo autor y creador de nuestra existencia, estamos marcados como enemigos de Dios. Estamos como los verdaderos traidores de toda la creación e incapaces de soportar el peso de nuestra condición pecaminosa. Liberados de este destino espiritualmente muerto y sin esperanza, somos libres para amar. Más aún, somos impulsados a estimularnos unos a otros a aprovechar nuestra nueva posición y a amar con entrega recíproca a nuestros hermanos y hermanas en la fe, sin vergüenza. Somos llamados a vivir esta curiosa restauración a algo más grande de lo que podríamos imaginar desde corazones y mentes nublados por el temor a la muerte, la ambición egoísta e incluso la vana presunción.

Reunámonos con la intención de animarnos y fortalecernos unos a otros para vivir conscientes del cumplimiento de nuestra fe y esperanza al acercarnos a cada día que pasa. Cuando Jesús esté siempre presente, la gloria de Dios brillará tanto que el sol podrá retirarse de su papel de iluminar. ¿Cuánto de este ánimo ves como tuyo, lector? ¿Qué podrías dejar de lado hoy para permitirte meditar en tu lugar en los afectos de tu Padre celestial y en el abrazo de tu Salvador?

¡En mi vida, Señor, sé glorificado hoy!
