Being a Healthy Christian - Acts 2:42-47 - July 23, 2026
I wish I could just snap my fingers and be in a lifestyle like the one shown in Acts 2:42-47. I wish that it were just that simple. I believe that this way of living is exactly how we were created to live. We were designed to connect with others, to serve, to laugh, to enjoy life, and to abandon our possessions in devotion to following Jesus. These things all help paint a perfect picture of what a healthy Christian life embodies.
However, the truth of the matter is this - we don't always live that way. We get a little too impatient when our food at the restaurant takes longer to arrive than it should. We get angry and - if you're anything like me - let a few not-very-nice words slip out when someone on the freeway cuts us off. Or we get snippy and opinionated with even our own family members. We can admit we all do it sometimes. In all honesty, it is hard to live a healthy Christian lifestyle most days. It's hard to want to make the right choices. It's hard to want to serve when we really don't "have it in us". It's not easy to want to show up for others or even the Lord when life gets rough.
But here's the beautiful thing about this messy thing we call life - in this life and this life only, we are given the opportunity to choose Jesus in the midst of trials, hardships, irritations, and sin. In heaven, when we are finally without sin and able to live a life of perfection, choosing Jesus will no longer be costly. But here in the in-between, in the face of really hard things, we choose to love Him and follow Him despite our sufferings. How beautiful is that? That in a broken, imperfect, sometimes painful world, we still desire a pure and full life that only comes from Jesus.
Every act of obedience in this life is an opportunity to declare that Jesus is enough. Every sacrifice, every moment of endurance, every quiet "yes" to Him in the midst of pain and disappointment becomes an act of worship. These moments may seem small, but they are shaping our hearts to treasure Christ above everything else. The very things we often wish away are the places where our faith is refined, our love for Him grows deeper, and our joy takes root in something that cannot be shaken.
So here is my conclusion-
Maybe the key to living a healthy, joy-filled, Christian life is not in the things we can achieve, the struggles we overcome, the size of our bank accounts, or the number of friends we have on our roster. Maybe it's simply in the intentional choice of choosing to follow Jesus, today.
Instead of focusing on all the things we can do to please God, I would encourage us all to just live in the present moment and walk with him, basking in His love for you and allowing that love to overflow onto the person right in front of you—just today. And watch the ways in which your life changes closely. For the fruits of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness…
When this becomes our daily lifestyle, joy becomes our inheritance.
