The Book of Hebrews - Hebrews 4:14-16 - August 10, 2026

Hebrews 4:14-16 - “Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.  For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.  Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need."

When a person, who has been driving an old clunker for many years, buys a brand new car, his first response is excitement.  He takes it out for rides even when he isn't driving anywhere in particular.  He also washes and vacuums it weekly.  After about six months, he still appreciates his car, but the initial excitement is gone, and it has become just something that is needed to get from point A to point B, and needs to have the mud hosed off every month or so.

Now think back to the excitement in your life when you trusted Jesus as your Savior, and His Word became alive and instructive.  Is your current love for Jesus and His Word just as alive and instructive now, or has it waned, and like with the new car, is just one of the items on your weekly "To Do" list.  If your spiritual life needs a jump start, here is a suggestion.  Sit down with a pen and a pad of paper and make two lists; one of the earthly benefits that came with your salvation, and one of the eternal benefits that you will receive when you get to heaven.  I believe that when you finish these two lists your love and thankfulness for what God has laid out for you will enhance your spiritual life.

Here are a few of the things that I would put on my list of benefits.

Hebreos 4:14–16 – “Por tanto, teniendo un gran Sumo Sacerdote que ha atravesado los cielos, Jesús, el Hijo de Dios, mantengamos firme nuestra confesión. Porque no tenemos un Sumo Sacerdote que no pueda compadecerse de nuestras debilidades, sino Uno que ha sido tentado en todo como nosotros, pero sin pecado. Acerquémonos, pues, con confianza al trono de la gracia, para que recibamos misericordia y hallemos gracia para la ayuda oportuna”.

Cuando una persona que ha estado manejando un carro viejo durante muchos años compra un carro completamente nuevo, su primera respuesta es emoción. Lo saca a pasear incluso cuando no va a ningún lugar en particular. También lo lava y lo aspira cada semana. Después de unos seis meses, todavía aprecia su carro, pero la emoción inicial se ha ido, y se ha convertido simplemente en algo necesario para ir del punto A al punto B, y que necesita que le quiten el lodo con una manguera cada mes más o menos.

Ahora piensa en la emoción que hubo en tu vida cuando confiaste en Jesús como tu Salvador, y Su Palabra se volvió viva e instructiva. ¿Tu amor actual por Jesús y Su Palabra sigue igual de vivo e instructivo ahora, o se ha debilitado y, como con el carro nuevo, se ha convertido simplemente en uno de los puntos de tu lista semanal de “cosas por hacer”? Si tu vida espiritual necesita un arranque, aquí hay una sugerencia. Siéntate con un bolígrafo y una libreta, y haz dos listas: una de los beneficios terrenales que vinieron con tu salvación, y otra de los beneficios eternos que recibirás cuando llegues al cielo. Creo que cuando termines estas dos listas, tu amor y gratitud por lo que Dios ha preparado para ti fortalecerán tu vida espiritual.

Aquí hay algunas de las cosas que yo pondría en mi lista de beneficios.

A. Mientras sigo viviendo en la tierra

B. Mientras viva con Dios en la eternidad
