The Book of Hebrews - Hebrews 8:1-13 - August 17, 2026

In Hebrews chapter 8, the author continues with the same thought from previous chapters: Jesus is the the perfect high priest of the new covenant relationship God has created for us.  

He begins by reaffirming the perfection of Jesus as high priest and that He reigns not from a man-made temple, but from the heavenly, perfect temple; from the right hand of God. He does not need to offer sacrifices for Himself, not has He ever needed to, because He has no sin to be cleansed of.  The image presented in this chapter of earthly temples and high priests being only a shadow of Jesus and His heavenly temple seems to me to be very fitting.  Earthly priests did the best they could with the limited capabilities they had. They didn’t have all the details — just like a shadow gives you the idea of something without knowing exactly what it will really look like.  

Finally the chapter also includes a lengthy quote from Jeremiah about the new covenant.  I love it when we are given the opportunity to see prophecy fulfilled because it reaffirms for me that God really does always keep his promises.  

In this quote, Jeremiah is telling everyone that in the future, the Jewish laws will be unnecessary because God will establish a new covenant with his people. Verse 10 ends with “and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”

We, here and now, are God’s chosen people, and we no longer need to abide by Jewish law or sacrifice animals in order to have a relationship with God because Jesus, the perfect high priest, already offered the perfect sacrifice on our behalf: His own sinless life.  

The Bible, and even this very chapter, is filled with prophecy — some of which has been fulfilled already and some that has not, but we know that when God speaks, He can only speak truth, so I look forward to the day prophesied in Jeremiah and quoted here in Hebrews when God promises that “they shall all know me from the least of them to the greatest. For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.”

Father, thank you for your word where you speak directly to us through your prophets.  Thank you especially for the author of Hebrews, who brought so much clarity to the new covenant you have to graciously given to us through the sacrifice of the life of your perfect son.  Help us to remember each day that when we come to you in submission and surrender our lives to you that you remember our sins no more and offer us a new, clean  life full of your mercy and grace.  Amen.

El Libro de Hebreos – Hebreos 8:1–13 – 17 de agosto de 2026

En Hebreos capítulo 8, el autor continúa con el mismo pensamiento de los capítulos anteriores: Jesús es el Sumo Sacerdote perfecto de la relación del nuevo pacto que Dios ha creado para nosotros.

Comienza reafirmando la perfección de Jesús como Sumo Sacerdote y que Él reina no desde un templo hecho por manos humanas, sino desde el templo celestial y perfecto, a la diestra de Dios. Él no necesita ofrecer sacrificios por Sí mismo, ni jamás lo ha necesitado, porque no tiene pecado del cual ser limpiado. La imagen presentada en este capítulo, de los templos terrenales y los sumos sacerdotes como solo una sombra de Jesús y Su templo celestial, me parece muy apropiada. Los sacerdotes terrenales hacían lo mejor que podían con las capacidades limitadas que tenían. No tenían todos los detalles, así como una sombra te da la idea de algo sin saber exactamente cómo será en realidad.

Finalmente, el capítulo también incluye una larga cita de Jeremías sobre el nuevo pacto. Me encanta cuando se nos da la oportunidad de ver la profecía cumplida porque me reafirma que Dios verdaderamente siempre cumple Sus promesas.

En esta cita, Jeremías les está diciendo a todos que, en el futuro, las leyes judías ya no serán necesarias porque Dios establecerá un nuevo pacto con Su pueblo. El versículo 10 termina diciendo: “Y Yo seré su Dios, y ellos serán Mi pueblo”.

Nosotros, aquí y ahora, somos el pueblo escogido de Dios, y ya no necesitamos cumplir la ley judía ni sacrificar animales para tener una relación con Dios, porque Jesús, el Sumo Sacerdote perfecto, ya ofreció el sacrificio perfecto en nuestro lugar: Su propia vida sin pecado.

La Biblia, e incluso este mismo capítulo, está llena de profecía; algunas ya se han cumplido y otras aún no. Pero sabemos que cuando Dios habla, solo puede hablar verdad. Por eso espero con anhelo el día profetizado en Jeremías y citado aquí en Hebreos, cuando Dios promete que “todos me conocerán, desde el menor hasta el mayor. Porque seré misericordioso con sus iniquidades, y nunca más me acordaré de sus pecados”.

Padre, gracias por Tu Palabra, donde nos hablas directamente por medio de Tus profetas. Gracias especialmente por el autor de Hebreos, quien trajo tanta claridad al nuevo pacto que Tú nos has dado tan bondadosamente por medio del sacrificio de la vida de Tu Hijo perfecto. Ayúdanos a recordar cada día que, cuando venimos a Ti en sumisión y rendimos nuestras vidas a Ti, Tú no recuerdas más nuestros pecados y nos ofreces una vida nueva y limpia, llena de Tu misericordia y gracia. Amén.
