Praying in the Psalms - Psalm 25 - August 26, 2025
Psalm 25:8-10 - Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in the way. He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way. All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.
Growing up, baseball was my thing. From the time I was six years old, all I wanted to do was throw a ball around and swing a stick at said ball-the joys of a child can be very simple. My mom had remarried when I was six, and my new stepdad had played baseball all his life. He quickly began to teach me proper mechanics for my swing, how to field a ground ball with two hands, and how to increase my accuracy on my throws. He instructed me because he knew better than me. He taught me based on his prior knowledge and experience, and thus, I trusted him as I improved in my skills.
How much more knowledge and experience does the God of the universe have to pass down to His children?
We come today to a “wisdom” Psalm, and I’d like to focus simply on Psalm 25:8. The verse states, “Good and upright is the LORD; therefore he instructs sinners in the way.” Meditate on this verse with me for a few minutes.
First, the Psalmist makes a clear and profound statement about the character of God: He is “good” and “upright.” God’s moral perfection is foundational to His character and attributes, and the term “upright,” here, refers to the fact that God acts in accordance with His promises. He has promised X; therefore, he will (definitively) perform X. There is no doubt. It’s ingrained in His very being.
Second, the Psalmist takes what He knows about God and makes a statement on how He acts. Specifically, He “instructs sinners in the way.” God is our great instructor. He is the world’s best tutor, teacher, and guide. He is the one who has all the experience, knowledge, wisdom, and life, and therefore, we can trust Him as we are His pupils.
In our prayer lives, we must recognize the nature of our relationship with God in this manner. He is the instructor; we are the student. He is the master; we are the padawan. He is the infinite; we are the finite. He is the holy; we are the sinful. Therefore, we must come to the LORD desperately and yet with confidence that He will make our paths straight and continually instruct us in daily life.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” (James 1:5)

Salmo 25:8-10 - El Señor es bueno y recto; por eso enseña el camino a los pecadores. Guía a los humildes por el camino justo y enseña su camino a los humildes. Todos los caminos del Señor son amor y fidelidad, para los que guardan su pacto y sus testimonios.
Cuando era niño, el béisbol era lo mío. Desde los seis años, lo único que quería era lanzar una pelota y batearla con un palo; las alegrías de un niño pueden ser muy sencillas. Mi madre se había vuelto a casar cuando yo tenía seis años, y mi nuevo padrastro había jugado al béisbol toda su vida. Rápidamente comenzó a enseñarme la mecánica adecuada para batear, cómo atrapar una pelota con las dos manos y cómo aumentar la precisión de mis lanzamientos. Me enseñaba porque sabía más que yo. Me enseñaba basándose en sus conocimientos y experiencia previos, y por eso confiaba en él a medida que mejoraba mis habilidades.
¿Cuánto más conocimiento y experiencia tiene el Dios del universo para transmitir a sus hijos?
Hoy llegamos a un salmo de «sabiduría», y me gustaría centrarme simplemente en el Salmo 25:8. El versículo dice: «Bueno y recto es el Señor; por eso enseña a los pecadores el camino». Meditemos juntos este versículo durante unos minutos.
En primer lugar, el salmista hace una declaración clara y profunda sobre el carácter de Dios: Él es «bueno» y «recto». La perfección moral de Dios es fundamental para su carácter y sus atributos, y el término «recto», aquí, se refiere al hecho de que Dios actúa de acuerdo con sus promesas. Él ha prometido X; por lo tanto, hará (definitivamente) X. No hay duda. Está arraigado en su propio ser.
En segundo lugar, el salmista toma lo que sabe acerca de Dios y hace una declaración sobre cómo Él actúa. Específicamente, Él «enseña a los pecadores el camino». Dios es nuestro gran instructor. Él es el mejor tutor, maestro y guía del mundo. Él es quien tiene toda la experiencia, el conocimiento, la sabiduría y la vida, y por lo tanto, podemos confiar en Él como sus alumnos.
En nuestra vida de oración, debemos reconocer la naturaleza de nuestra relación con Dios de esta manera. Él es el instructor; nosotros somos los alumnos. Él es el maestro; nosotros somos los padawan. Él es infinito; nosotros somos finitos. Él es santo; nosotros somos pecadores. Por lo tanto, debemos acudir al Señor con desesperación y, sin embargo, con la confianza de que Él enderezará nuestros caminos y nos instruirá continuamente en la vida diaria.
«Si alguno de vosotros tiene falta de sabiduría, pídala a Dios, que da a todos abundantemente y sin reproche, y le será dada». (Santiago 1:5)
