Praying in the Psalms - Psalm 34 - August 27, 2025 

I will bless the Lord at all times;    

I will bless the Lord at all times;    

his praise shall continually be in my mouth.  

My soul makes its boast in the Lord;    

let the humble hear and be glad.  

Oh, magnify the Lord with me,    

and let us exalt his name together! (Psalm 34:1-3) 

There’s a running joke in Christian circles about “Jesus” being the correct Sunday School answer to everything. If you don’t know the answer, or didn’t hear the question you should be okay saying “Jesus,” and you’ll be right, at least most of the time. If not, you’ll at least get participation credit. When it comes to real-life’s hard problems and questions for the Christian, finding a right, or ‘close enough’ answer isn’t so easy. Situations are complicated, relationships are complex, and nuances abound. Life is busy. Pain is real. And yet, there are five words in Psalm 34 that may always be the right answer: Magnify the Lord with me.  

Let me explain. The image that immediately comes to mind is that of a magnifying glass. As a worship service is about to begin, the Psalmist pulls out his magnifying glass, puts it up to his eye and points it vertically - towards God. “It’s time to focus on God, He is great – let’s praise Him!” he says to his neighbor. We may have even done and said something similar during our church attendance over the years (maybe not the magnifying glass part). This is probably a fairly accurate representation of how the Church feels on a Sunday morning, and on the surface, it seems like an appropriate interpretation of this verse.  

The Hebrew word gadal, which is translated as ‘magnify’ in verse 3, is often translated as “make great,” as well as “boast” or “grow up.” It’s the same word that is used in Ezekiel 31:4, where the Prophet says, “Waters nourished it, deep springs made it grow tall.” All of these synonyms seem in line with Psalm 34:3, and the Psalmist before the worship service. “It’s time to boast in God”, or “It’s time to make God great” are probably not the exact words we would use, but the sentiment sounds right.  

What if this isn’t the right perspective? Certainly, it is correct that we should make God big. Yes, we should be in that worship service turning towards our neighbors and inviting them to connect with God. But we naturally infer the image of us holding the magnifying glass towards God, attempting to make Him big as we praise Him. Here’s what we miss: 

You are the magnifying glass.   

Why does that matter? Let’s re-read Psalm 34:3 with the understanding that we are always magnifying something, whether it be God, family, ourselves, our bank accounts, our favorite sports team. We see that the right answer is always both making God big and inviting others to do the same. But we also see the potential for making great the wrong things when we aren’t focused on Him alone. How did David respond when his life was in danger? He wrote Psalm 34:3. In the midst of his fear, he chose to magnify the Lord. How do I respond when I am facing trouble and danger? If I am not aligned towards God, and instead am intent on anything else – including ‘good’ things, like my family, friends or myself, then my worship is misplaced. Our entire self should align to make Him big, both to ourselves and the world around us.  

The interesting thing about a magnifying glass is that it can only focus on one thing at a time. We are the same. You and I were created to magnify God, but because we can only make great one thing at a time, when we point towards something else, we fail to fulfill our design and we misdirect our worship. Today, we have the opportunity to magnify the only right thing - God. Let's not miss that opportunity. 

Lord, I confess that I regularly magnify the wrong things. Please forgive me and reorient my priorities. I desire to magnify you. As I pray through this Psalm today, may your words cause growth and transformation in my life. Amen.

Oh, magnificad al Señor conmigo, 

y exaltemos juntos su nombre. (Salmo 34:1-3) 

Hay un chiste recurrente en los círculos cristianos sobre que «Jesús» es la respuesta correcta a todo en la escuela dominical. Si no sabes la respuesta o no has oído la pregunta, no pasa nada si dices «Jesús», y acertarás, al menos la mayoría de las veces. Si no, al menos te darán puntos por participar. Cuando se trata de los problemas y preguntas difíciles de la vida real para los cristianos, encontrar una respuesta correcta, o «lo suficientemente cercana», no es tan fácil. Las situaciones son complicadas, las relaciones son complejas y abundan los matices. La vida es ajetreada. El dolor es real. Y, sin embargo, hay cinco palabras en el Salmo 34 que siempre pueden ser la respuesta correcta: Ensalzad conmigo al Señor. 

  Déjame explicarte. La imagen que me viene inmediatamente a la mente es la de una lupa. Cuando está a punto de comenzar el servicio de adoración, el salmista saca su lupa, se la lleva al ojo y la apunta verticalmente, hacia Dios. «Es hora de centrarnos en Dios, Él es grande, ¡alabémosle!», le dice a su vecino. Es posible que incluso hayamos hecho y dicho algo similar durante nuestra asistencia a la iglesia a lo largo de los años (quizás sin la lupa). Probablemente, esta sea una representación bastante precisa de cómo se siente la Iglesia un domingo por la mañana y, a primera vista, parece una interpretación adecuada de este versículo. 

  La palabra hebrea gadal, que se traduce como «magnificar» en el versículo 3, se traduce a menudo como «hacer grande», así como «gloriarse» o «crecer». Es la misma palabra que se utiliza en Ezequiel 31:4, donde el profeta dice: «Las aguas lo nutrieron, los manantiales profundos lo hicieron crecer». Todos estos sinónimos parecen estar en consonancia con el Salmo 34:3 y con el salmista antes del servicio de adoración. «Es hora de jactarse de Dios» o «Es hora de hacer grande a Dios» probablemente no sean las palabras exactas que usaríamos, pero el sentimiento parece correcto. 

  ¿Y si esta no es la perspectiva correcta? Sin duda, es correcto que debemos engrandecer a Dios. Sí, debemos estar en ese servicio de adoración volviéndonos hacia nuestros vecinos e invitándolos a conectarse con Dios. Pero naturalmente inferimos la imagen de nosotros sosteniendo la lupa hacia Dios, intentando engrandecerlo mientras lo alabamos. Esto es lo que nos perdemos: 

Tú eres la lupa. 

¿Por qué es importante? Releamos el Salmo 34:3 con la comprensión de que siempre estamos magnificando algo, ya sea a Dios, a la familia, a nosotros mismos, nuestras cuentas bancarias o nuestro equipo deportivo favorito. Vemos que la respuesta correcta es siempre magnificar a Dios e invitar a otros a hacer lo mismo. Pero también vemos el potencial de magnificar las cosas equivocadas cuando no nos enfocamos solo en Él. ¿Cómo respondió David cuando su vida estaba en peligro? Escribió el Salmo 34:3. En medio de su miedo, eligió magnificar al Señor. ¿Cómo respondo cuando me enfrento a problemas y peligros? Si no estoy alineado con Dios, y en cambio estoy concentrado en cualquier otra cosa, incluyendo cosas «buenas», como mi familia, mis amigos o yo mismo, entonces mi adoración está fuera de lugar. Todo nuestro ser debe alinearse para magnificarlo, tanto para nosotros mismos como para el mundo que nos rodea. 

  Lo interesante de una lupa es que solo puede enfocar una cosa a la vez. Nosotros somos iguales. Tú y yo fuimos creados para magnificar a Dios, pero como solo podemos magnificar una cosa a la vez, cuando apuntamos hacia otra cosa, no cumplimos con nuestro propósito y desviamos nuestra adoración. Hoy tenemos la oportunidad de magnificar lo único correcto: a Dios. No perdamos esa oportunidad. 

Señor, confieso que habitualmente engrandecen las cosas equivocadas. Por favor, perdóname y reorienta mis prioridades. Deseo engrandecerte a ti. Mientras oro hoy con este salmo, que tus palabras provoquen crecimiento y transformación en mi vida. Amén.
