The Book of Hebrews - Hebrews 3:7-19 - August 7, 2026

Hebrews 3:12-14 - Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today”, that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.

In our passage this morning, the author of Hebrews reminds us of the negative example of the Israelites as they wandered the wilderness for 40 years. A period in their history that was marked by disobedience, rebellion, lack of faith, and testing of God. The passage begins and ends with a warning against behaviors and attitudes that got them in trouble. Habits that, if we’re not careful, we too can easily fall into.

Thankfully, in the middle of our passage, the author gives us instruction on how we are to handle ourselves so that we don’t fall into the same disobedient mindset.

In verse 13 we are told about the necessity and need to consistently exhort one another. This is the accountability that is provided by the body of Christ. The duty to encourage, support, motivate, and even confront one another. A cord of 3 strands is not easily broken (Ecclesiastes 4:12). We are stronger together. Left alone to fight our own battles and the deceitfulness of sin, we are weak and vulnerable. Thank God we are in His family and can lean on those around us.

How are you doing? Are you allowing the believers around you to help and support you through your experiences?

If we back-up another verse, we see in verse 12 the urgency of these instructions. Verse 12 starts with “Take care”. This is an active warning, urging believers to exercise vigilance, discernment, and spiritual maturity in their faith. It is not a passive suggestion but a command to watch over oneself and others in the family, ensuring that no one develops an “evil heart of unbelief” that could result in falling away from God. The author realizes that the true goal is for all believers “to share in Christ”, and for us to accomplish that goal we must work together and for each other.

Be grateful today that we are so blessed to be part of God’s family, and even more specifically, that we have our strong Hessel body of believers that is there to walk alongside us in our faith journey. The prize of Christ that we strive for, and are promised, is worth every step. I encourage you today to both allow the body of Christ to walk with you, and also to reach out and help carry a brother or sister along.

Hebreos 3:12–14 – Tengan cuidado, hermanos, no sea que en alguno de ustedes haya un corazón malo e incrédulo que los lleve a apartarse del Dios vivo. Más bien, exhórtense unos a otros cada día, mientras todavía se diga “hoy”, para que ninguno de ustedes sea endurecido por el engaño del pecado. Porque hemos llegado a participar de Cristo, si en verdad mantenemos firme hasta el fin nuestra confianza inicial.

En nuestro pasaje de esta mañana, el autor de Hebreos nos recuerda el ejemplo negativo de los israelitas mientras vagaban por el desierto durante 40 años. Fue un período en su historia marcado por desobediencia, rebelión, falta de fe y por poner a Dios a prueba. El pasaje comienza y termina con una advertencia contra los comportamientos y actitudes que los metieron en problemas. Hábitos en los que, si no tenemos cuidado, nosotros también podemos caer fácilmente.

Afortunadamente, en medio de nuestro pasaje, el autor nos da instrucciones sobre cómo debemos conducirnos para no caer en la misma mentalidad desobediente.

En el versículo 13 se nos habla de la necesidad de exhortarnos unos a otros de manera constante. Esta es la rendición de cuentas que provee el cuerpo de Cristo. Es el deber de animarnos, apoyarnos, motivarnos e incluso confrontarnos unos a otros. Cordón de tres dobleces no se rompe pronto (Eclesiastés 4:12). Somos más fuertes juntos. Si nos quedamos solos para pelear nuestras propias batallas y enfrentar el engaño del pecado, somos débiles y vulnerables. Gracias a Dios que estamos en Su familia y podemos apoyarnos en quienes nos rodean.

¿Cómo estás? ¿Estás permitiendo que los creyentes a tu alrededor te ayuden y te apoyen en medio de tus experiencias?

Si retrocedemos un versículo más, vemos en el versículo 12 la urgencia de estas instrucciones. El versículo 12 comienza con “Tengan cuidado”. Esta es una advertencia activa que urge a los creyentes a ejercer vigilancia, discernimiento y madurez espiritual en su fe. No es una sugerencia pasiva, sino un mandato a velar por uno mismo y por los demás en la familia, asegurándonos de que nadie desarrolle un “corazón malo de incredulidad” que pueda resultar en apartarse de Dios. El autor entiende que la verdadera meta es que todos los creyentes “participen de Cristo”, y para que logremos esa meta debemos trabajar juntos y a favor unos de otros.

Hoy, sé agradecido de que somos tan bendecidos al formar parte de la familia de Dios, y aún más específicamente, de que tenemos nuestro fuerte cuerpo de creyentes en Hessel, que está allí para caminar junto a nosotros en nuestra jornada de fe. El premio de Cristo por el cual nos esforzamos, y que se nos promete, vale cada paso. Hoy te animo tanto a permitir que el cuerpo de Cristo camine contigo como también a acercarte y ayudar a llevar a un hermano o hermana en el camino.
