Daily Word of Encouragement 9.12.25 - Kitty Jones

The Gospel of Luke - Luke 9:28-62 - September 12, 2025

 In Chapter 9 of Luke, Jesus tells his disciples, “If anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me. Whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for Me will save it.” Jesus calls for TOTAL commitment, daily denial of self to be “all-in” with Christ living His life in us and out through us! About 8 days after that conversation with the disciples, Peter, John, and James were privileged to witness what we call “The Transfiguration”. 

 Jesus’ face was changed, His clothing became white as lightning, and He had a conversation with Moses and Elijah!! As Peter began babbling, God the Father spoke: “This is My Son, Whom I have chosen: listen to Him!”

  Can you even begin to imagine being present in that scene? The disciples were rendered silent (for once); they told no one what they had seen. They wouldn’t have been believed, anyway. But you and I get to read about this amazing interaction and allow our trust to be deepened.

  The next day, we see a distraught father seeking Jesus’ help for his son, who is being destroyed by demon-possession. To the cynical crowd, Jesus says, “You are a perverse generation without faith. How long must I tolerate you?” Jesus’ healing of the boy brought the crowd to amazement at the greatness of God. While they were marveling, Jesus quietly informed the disciples of His impending betrayal - but they missed the point and instead, began arguing about who of them would be greatest in heaven. (Aren’t they just so very human?)

  I have often wondered about Jesus’ statement in v50, “Whoever is not against you is for you”. The note in my study Bible helps. “Jesus emphasized there is no neutrality in the struggle against evil. Therefore, those not against us are for us.” We work together to combat evil, even if we might not agree regarding heaven and how to get there.

  It is important that we slow down and ponder how Jesus responded to the men who declared their desire to follow Him. “If you think My way sounds good and right, but you also cling to the world’s ways, you are not ready to follow Me.” 

 How about you? Are you distracted by what your bank account provides? Do you focus on what others think of you? Are you so wrapped up in your family that there is little room for attentiveness to God and His Word? As mentioned above, Jesus calls for TOTAL commitment, daily denial of self to be “all-in” with Christ living His life in us and out through us!

 En el capítulo 9 de Lucas, Jesús dice a sus discípulos: «Si alguno quiere venir en pos de mí, niéguese a sí mismo, tome su cruz cada día y sígame. Porque el que quiera salvar su vida, la perderá; pero el que pierda su vida por causa de mí, la salvará». Jesús pide un compromiso TOTAL, una negación diaria de uno mismo para estar «totalmente comprometidos» con Cristo, viviendo Su vida en nosotros y a través de nosotros. Unos ocho días después de esa conversación con los discípulos, Pedro, Juan y Santiago tuvieron el privilegio de presenciar lo que llamamos «La Transfiguración».

 El rostro de Jesús cambió, sus vestiduras se volvieron blancas como el relámpago, ¡y conversó con Moisés y Elías! Cuando Pedro comenzó a balbucear, Dios Padre habló: «Este es mi Hijo, a quien he elegido: ¡escuchadle!».

 ¿Podéis siquiera imaginaros estar presentes en esa escena? Los discípulos se quedaron en silencio (por una vez); no le contaron a nadie lo que habían visto. De todos modos, nadie les habría creído. Pero tú y yo podemos leer sobre esta increíble interacción y permitir que nuestra fe se profundice.

 Al día siguiente, vemos a un padre angustiado que busca la ayuda de Jesús para su hijo, que está siendo destruido por la posesión demoníaca. A la multitud cínica, Jesús les dice: «Sois una generación perversa y sin fe. ¿Hasta cuándo tendré que aguantaros?». La curación del niño por parte de Jesús dejó a la multitud asombrada ante la grandeza de Dios. Mientras se maravillaban, Jesús informó en voz baja a los discípulos de su inminente traición, pero ellos no entendieron el mensaje y, en cambio, comenzaron a discutir sobre quién de ellos sería el más grande en el cielo. (¿No son tan humanos?)

  A menudo me he preguntado sobre la declaración de Jesús en el versículo 50: «El que no está contra vosotros, está a favor vuestro». La nota de mi Biblia de estudio me ayuda. « Jesús enfatizó que no hay neutralidad en la lucha contra el mal. Por lo tanto, los que no están contra nosotros están a nuestro favor». Trabajamos juntos para combatir el mal, aunque no estemos de acuerdo en cuanto al cielo y cómo llegar a él.

 Es importante que nos detengamos y reflexionemos sobre cómo respondió Jesús a los hombres que declararon su deseo de seguirlo. «Si crees que mi camino es bueno y correcto, pero también te aferras a los caminos del mundo, no estás listo para seguirme. »

 ¿Y tú? ¿Te distraen las ganancias de tu cuenta bancaria? ¿Te preocupas por lo que los demás piensan de ti? ¿Estás tan absorto en tu familia que te queda poco espacio para prestar atención a Dios y a su Palabra? Como se mencionó anteriormente, Jesús exige un compromiso TOTAL, una negación diaria de uno mismo para estar «totalmente comprometido» con Cristo, viviendo su vida en nosotros y a través de nosotros.
