Daily Word of Encouragement 9.2.25 - Tom Cooney

The Gospel of Luke - Luke 1:39-80 - September 2, 2025 

Lord Jesus, I pray that you would enable us to see your mighty hand working among us and that we would be willing and obedient servants for your glory. 

Mary and Elizabeth were uniquely united in their purpose for God's glory, and I can only imagine Mary's joy at hearing that Elizabeth was also pregnant. Elizabeth, a beloved and respected relative, would finally have a child, despite her "advanced age," and what a child it would be! Who better to share Mary's wide range of emotions concerning all that was happening so suddenly? God's gracious provision to Mary of an older, wiser woman who had waited so long, suffered immeasurable social shame, and who now comes to the realization that all of it was orchestrated for God's perfect purpose. Three months of shared bliss and anticipation together! Mary would have to return to her hometown, and disapproving looks and whispers as her midriff began to swell with the life of our Savior within. Still, her conviction about God's plan and the joy of rejoicing with Elizabeth would carry her through the remaining six months. 

John reacted first, but Elizabeth is the one able to speak! John does a cartwheel in his mother's womb; he leaped for joy, while Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, breaks forth in a divine declaration of Mary's special position in relation to the Savior of the world. Mary will forever be remembered as blessed because of the immense blessing of her Lord and Savior. These women are to be celebrated for their amazing faith and perseverance in believing what God had declared. But the one that both Elizabeth and Mary celebrate is the one they call Lord and Savior, the one whose presence John leaped for joy when he reacted to, Jesus of Nazareth! 

Joy is a theme throughout this passage of scripture, but there is also a contrasting emotion that I hope you noticed. Fear! When John is born and Zechariah's speech is returned to him, the people of their village begin to get a glimpse of what God has done and are filled with fear: 

"And fear came on all their neighbors" (65). When we experience the power of God moving in us, through us, and using us in ways that we cannot explain, it should inspire a reverent awe and respect for the purposes and plans of God, as revealed through what He is doing in our midst. 

Have you experienced that? Have you marveled at who God is and what He chooses to do for His honor and glory through broken vessels? The reality of a life given over to Him will be a testimony to all. Verse 66 says: "And all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, 'What then will this child be?'" This child would be the forerunner of the Messiah. He would be tasked with proclaiming the coming of Jesus, the Savior of the world. Do you sense that God has given us a similar task? 

Lord, help us to be faithful in walking with you and calling others to come and bow before you as their personal Lord and Savior. Help us to see, like Zechariah, Elizabeth, and Mary, that no matter what you call us to, you will always provide and never abandon us.

El Evangelio de Lucas - Lucas 1:39-80 - 2 de septiembre de 2025 

Señor Jesús, te pido que nos permitas ver tu poderosa mano obrando entre nosotros y que seamos siervos dispuestos y obedientes para tu gloria. 

María e Isabel estaban unidas de manera única en su propósito por la gloria de Dios, y solo puedo imaginar la alegría de María al saber que Isabel también estaba embarazada. Isabel, una pariente querida y respetada, finalmente tendría un hijo, a pesar de su «edad avanzada», ¡y qué hijo sería! ¿Quién mejor para compartir la amplia gama de emociones de María con respecto a todo lo que estaba sucediendo tan repentinamente? La provisión misericordiosa de Dios para María de una mujer mayor y más sabia que había esperado tanto tiempo, sufrido una vergüenza social inconmensurable y que ahora se da cuenta de que todo fue orquestado para el propósito perfecto de Dios. ¡Tres meses de felicidad y expectación compartidas! María tendría que volver a su ciudad natal, donde la esperarían miradas de desaprobación y susurros a medida que su vientre comenzara a crecer con la vida de nuestro Salvador en su interior. Aun así, su convicción sobre el plan de Dios y la alegría de regocijarse con Isabel la ayudarían a superar los seis meses restantes. 

Juan reaccionó primero, ¡pero Isabel es la que puede hablar! Juan da una voltereta en el vientre de su madre; salta de alegría, mientras Isabel, llena del Espíritu Santo, pronuncia una declaración divina sobre la posición especial de María en relación con el Salvador del mundo. María será recordada para siempre como bendita debido a la inmensa bendición de su Señor y Salvador. Estas mujeres deben ser celebradas por su asombrosa fe y perseverancia en creer lo que Dios había declarado. Pero aquel a quien tanto Isabel como María celebran es aquel a quien llaman Señor y Salvador, aquel cuya presencia hizo que Juan saltara de alegría cuando reaccionó, ¡Jesús de Nazaret! 

La alegría es un tema recurrente a lo largo de este pasaje de las Escrituras, pero también hay una emoción contrastante que espero que hayan notado. ¡El miedo! Cuando Juan nace y Zacarías recupera el habla, la gente de su pueblo comienza a vislumbrar lo que Dios ha hecho y se llena de temor: 

«Y el temor se apoderó de todos sus vecinos» (65). Cuando experimentamos el poder de Dios moviéndose en nosotros, a través de nosotros y usándonos de maneras que no podemos explicar, eso debería inspirarnos un temor reverente y respeto por los propósitos y planes de Dios, tal como se revelan a través de lo que Él está haciendo en medio de nosotros. 

¿Has experimentado eso? ¿Te has maravillado de quién es Dios y de lo que Él elige hacer para su honor y gloria a través de vasos quebrantados? La realidad de una vida entregada a Él será un testimonio para todos. El versículo 66 dice: «Y todos los que los oyeron guardaron estas cosas en sus corazones, diciendo: «¿Qué será, pues, este niño?»». Este niño sería el precursor del Mesías. Se le encomendaría la tarea de proclamar la venida de Jesús, el Salvador del mundo. ¿Sientes que Dios nos ha encomendado una tarea similar? 

Señor, ayúdanos a ser fieles en caminar contigo y a llamar a otros a venir y postrarse ante ti como su Señor y Salvador personal. Ayúdanos a ver, como Zacarías, Isabel y María, que no importa a qué nos llames, siempre nos proveerás y nunca nos abandonarás.
