The Gospel of Luke - Luke 23:26-56 - September 29, 2025

 Luke 23:32 "And when they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Jesus and the criminals/malefactors; one on the right and one on the left."

 Our bible passage today is Luke 23:26-56, which describes the crucifixion and burial of Jesus.  Although each of these topics would make a good theme for a devotion, in this one, I am going to focus on the two criminals who were crucified next to Jesus.  Although they are commonly called thieves, they must have committed a more serious offense, because the Romans didn't crucify common thieves.  We don't know if these two criminals were partners in crime or two men who didn't know each other, but regardless of whether they knew each other, they both heard the words of Jesus: "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do."  One criminal responded by mocking Jesus and hurling abuse at Him. "Are you not the Christ?  Save yourself and us."  The other criminal responded differently.  He said to the other criminal,  "We are receiving what we justly deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong."  Then he said to Jesus, "Remember me when you come into your kingdom."

 Jesus responded by saying to him, "Truly I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise."

 Here are two takeaways from this account of the two criminals.

 Number One:  In 2 Corinthians 2:14 and John 6:44, God tells us that unless He pulls back the veil and opens the hearts of unbelievers, they cannot understand spiritual truth.  

* "The natural man (unbeliever) does not understand the things of the Spirit of God for they seem foolish to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned."

* "No one can come to Me, unless the Father who sent Me draws him."

This is why an unbeliever can attend church and hear a clear presentation of the gospel, yet walk away without responding as if he had never heard it.

 Number Two:  God's offer of salvation is open to unbelievers until the moment of their death; so don't lose heart.  Keep praying for your unsaved family and friends to come to salvation.  They may have a "Thief On The Cross" experience!!

 Lucas 23:32 «Y cuando llegaron al lugar llamado La Calavera, allí crucificaron a Jesús y a los criminales/malhechores, uno a la derecha y otro a la izquierda».

 El pasaje bíblico de hoy es Lucas 23:26-56, que describe la crucifixión y el entierro de Jesús. Aunque cada uno de estos temas sería un buen tema para una devoción, en esta ocasión me voy a centrar en los dos criminales que fueron crucificados junto a Jesús. Aunque se les suele llamar ladrones, debieron de haber cometido un delito más grave, porque los romanos no crucificaban a los ladrones comunes.  No sabemos si estos dos criminales eran cómplices o dos hombres que no se conocían, pero independientemente de si se conocían o no, ambos escucharon las palabras de Jesús: «Padre, perdónalos porque no saben lo que hacen». Uno de los criminales respondió burlándose de Jesús y lanzándole insultos. «¿No eres tú el Cristo? Sálvate a ti mismo y a nosotros».  El otro criminal respondió de manera diferente. Le dijo al otro criminal: «Nosotros recibimos lo que merecemos por nuestros actos, pero este hombre no ha hecho nada malo». Luego le dijo a Jesús: «Acuérdate de mí cuando vengas a tu reino».

Jesús le respondió diciendo: «En verdad te digo que hoy estarás conmigo en el paraíso».

 Hay dos conclusiones que podemos sacar de este relato sobre los dos criminales.

 Número uno:  En 2 Corintios 2:14 y Juan 6:44, Dios nos dice que, a menos que Él retire el velo y abra los corazones de los incrédulos, estos no pueden comprender la verdad espiritual.

* «El hombre natural (incrédulo) no comprende las cosas del Espíritu de Dios, porque le parecen locura, y no puede entenderlas, porque se disciernen espiritualmente».

* «Nadie puede venir a mí, a menos que el Padre que me envió lo atraiga».

Por eso un incrédulo puede asistir a la iglesia y escuchar una clara presentación del evangelio, pero marcharse sin responder, como si nunca lo hubiera oído.

 Número dos:  La oferta de salvación de Dios está abierta a los incrédulos hasta el momento de su muerte, así que no desanimes.  Sigue orando para que tus familiares y amigos no salvos alcancen la salvación.  ¡Puede que tengan una experiencia como la del «ladrón en la cruz»!
