Follow Jesus, Love People, Make Disciples - Luke 9:23-27 - October 1, 2026

Luke 9:23 - “And He said to all, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.’”

If I were to survey one hundred random Christians and ask them what it means to be a Christian, I would venture to guess many of them would respond, “Being a Christian means that I follow Jesus.”  Following Jesus is something that we say all the time as Christians.  We are Christ-followers.  But has the phrase “Follow Jesus” lost its punch?  Sometimes, when a phrase becomes too familiar, we grow numb to its depth of meaning.  I fear that we as a modern evangelical church have grown numb to the true significance of living a life of truly following Jesus.  I hope that these next ten devotions serve as a means to refocus all of us in this way.

Luke 9:23 is a powerful verse in which Jesus commands people to take three steps of faith: (1) Deny yourself, (2) Take up your cross, and (3) Follow Him.  Let’s think briefly about how these three things work together this morning.

Deny Yourself.  To follow Jesus first means to accept that your life is FOR Him, not for yourself.  We are created in God’s image for the express purpose of glorifying God (Isaiah 43:7).  All of us are filled with desires, hopes, dreams, thoughts, etc. that are antithetical to God.  We are sinful by nature, and so as we are called to follow Jesus, we are called to deny ourselves.  This means that we say “no” to our sinful flesh.  We take every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5) and set not our minds on the flesh but on the Spirit (Romans 8:5-8).  We see other’s needs as more important than our own (Philippians 2:1-5).  This is totally counterintuitive and counter-cultural.  It takes a miracle of God for us to be able to deny ourselves - so ask God for help to say no to your sin and yes to Him daily.

Take Up Your Cross.  This phrase “take up your cross” should shock us.  We’ve likely heard this verse many times and so we nod our heads - but did you hear that right?  You, Christian, take up your cross - be willing to suffer and die - each and every day.  In 1 Corinthians 15:31, Paul says that he dies daily!  What does it mean to die daily?  Many things, but one is related to the command to deny yourself.  It means that we are to put the old ways to death and live a life that is alive to God and His will.  We must be willing to suffer in our pursuit of Jesus.  Suffering is not something to be avoided in the Christian life - it is a feature of it.

Follow Jesus.  He is the Good Shepherd (John 10) who leads us, calls us by name, and commands us to follow Him.  We must obey the first two aspects of this command - denying ourselves and taking up our cross - but we also must joyfully choose to listen and follow Jesus.  The Christian life is not all doom and gloom and a guarantee of constant suffering.  The most amazing blessings are found when we listen to Jesus’s voice, trust Him, and follow Him.  He has given us everything we need and more, so take a step of faith.  Whatever season or station you are in, take a step in the direction of following Jesus.  I can’t guarantee comfort or worldly success, but I can guarantee that your soul will be blessed and fulfilled.

Church - this month - let’s commit to following Jesus together.  Let’s help one another say no to sin and yes to Christ.  Let’s encourage one another to take a “next step” of faith that God is calling us to.  Let’s follow Jesus.

Niégate a ti mismo.

Sigue a Jesús.

Sigamos a Jesús.
