Daily Word of Encouragement 10.19.25 - Annie Olcese

Creation & Foundations - Genesis 11:10-32 - October 19, 2025

Please read through the passage before reading this devotion.

 When I initially read through today's verses, I have to admit that my first response was to groan.  "Oh no," I thought, "not genealogy!" And honestly, I think many people just skip over any chapter titled "the descendants of…" because it's boring, right?  There is nothing for us to learn here, right?  It's not necessary.  But here we are wrong.  

 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, "16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

 What are those first two words?  "All scripture," and genealogies are included in that.  So what can these lists of names and ages teach us?  Well, one thing they teach us is that details are important to God.  He doesn't just take a "view from the sky" and look at the big picture; he looks at every little detail in everything that ever was, is, and will be!  That's a whole lot of details!  

 Our society today tends to look at the big picture, the majority vote, and the "greater good", but with this mindset, we tend to lose track of the things that really matter to God.

 God cares about those who are less likely to speak up, and even if they do, they are not likely to be heard.  In this group are widows, orphans, and the very poor.  He wants us to care about them, too, and when we do, it brings glory to him.

 God cares about the movies we choose to watch, the books we choose to read, and the music we choose to listen to.  It matters to him that what we take into ourselves is wholesome (see Philippians 4:8). When we care about these things, it brings glory to him. 

 Finally, God cares about how we treat his word.  It is his gift to us, given out of his great love, so that we are not lost and without instruction.  When we disregard his word, even just the genealogy, we are disregarding him.  God's ultimate goal is to be glorified, so how can we glorify him in light of our attitude towards his word?  We can treat all scripture as Timothy tells us to, as God breathed! 

 God, thank you for your word.  We are so grateful for your mercy that you don't leave us lost and wandering, but give us such clear instructions.  Help us to glorify you, and to desire to glorify you.  We ask for safety and health as we enter this winter season, and for peace knowing that you love us, you sent your son to die for us, and that he is coming back! Amen.

 Cuando leí por primera vez los versículos de hoy, debo admitir que mi primera reacción fue gemir. «Oh, no», pensé, «¡otra vez la genealogía!». Y, sinceramente, creo que mucha gente se salta cualquier capítulo titulado «los descendientes de...» porque es aburrido, ¿verdad? No hay nada que aprender aquí, ¿verdad? No es necesario.  Pero aquí nos equivocamos.  

 2 Timoteo 3:16-17 dice: «16 Toda la Escritura es inspirada por Dios y útil para enseñar, reprender, corregir y entrenar en la justicia, 17 a fin de que el siervo de Dios esté completamente equipado para toda buena obra».

 ¿Cuáles son las dos primeras palabras? «Toda la Escritura», y las genealogías están incluidas en eso. Entonces, ¿qué nos enseñan estas listas de nombres y edades? Bueno, una cosa que nos enseñan es que los detalles son importantes para Dios. Él no se limita a tomar una «perspectiva desde el cielo» y mirar el panorama general; ¡él mira cada pequeño detalle de todo lo que fue, es y será!  ¡Son muchos detalles!  

 Nuestra sociedad actual tiende a ver el panorama general, el voto mayoritario y el «bien común», pero con esta mentalidad, tendemos a perder de vista las cosas que realmente le importan a Dios.

 A Dios le importan aquellos que son menos propensos a hablar, e incluso si lo hacen, es poco probable que sean escuchados.  En este grupo se encuentran las viudas, los huérfanos y los muy pobres.  Él quiere que nosotros también nos preocupemos por ellos, y cuando lo hacemos, le damos gloria.

 A Dios le importa las películas que elegimos ver, los libros que elegimos leer y la música que elegimos escuchar.  Para él es importante que lo que incorporamos a nuestra vida sea sano (véase Filipenses 4:8). Cuando nos preocupamos por estas cosas, le damos gloria. 

 Por último, a Dios le importa cómo tratamos su palabra.  Es su regalo para nosotros, dado por su gran amor, para que no estemos perdidos y sin instrucción. Cuando ignoramos su palabra, aunque solo sea la genealogía, lo estamos ignorando a él. El objetivo final de Dios es ser glorificado, así que, ¿cómo podemos glorificarlo a la luz de nuestra actitud hacia su palabra? Podemos tratar todas las Escrituras como nos dice Timoteo, ¡como inspiradas por Dios! 

 Dios, gracias por tu palabra. Estamos muy agradecidos por tu misericordia, por no dejarnos perdidos y errantes, sino por darnos instrucciones tan claras. Ayúdanos a glorificarte y a desear glorificarte. Te pedimos seguridad y salud al entrar en esta temporada de invierno, y paz al saber que nos amas, que enviaste a tu hijo a morir por nosotros y que él va a volver. Amén.
