Creation & Foundations - Genesis 1-2 (Review) - October 20, 2025

"Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.' So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, 'Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.' And God said, 'Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.' And it was so. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day."

 This section is really jam-packed with God's roadmaps for human life. The week laid out with the seventh day blessed and set aside for rest, the sun and moon to mark holiday schedules, days, and years. God also lays out plans for marriage between a man and a woman, and their union would be of greater standing than that of their families of origin. Not only does God tell us how He made the earth, sea, plants, and creatures with His voice, but also how He crafts and breathes life into man. I am struck by this: God's voice has the power to bring forth this beautiful world and all the creatures we encounter. Then God was kind enough to preserve His words for us in the Bible, which Jesus Himself preserved and quoted during His time on earth! What a contrast this life-giving Word is to the temporary reign of our enemy; as Jesus says in John 10:10, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly."

I love marveling at God's wonder and design. Look at the woodpecker! God has designed these small birds so genuinely and creatively- one day of pecking on my house should be enough to cause enough traumatic brain injuries to paralyze the little guys! Good news (or bad news for my walls)! The woodpecker's tongue wraps around the back of the skull and cushions its brain! Another of my favorite designs is the giraffe. They already have a complex cardiovascular system with high blood pressure to keep the blood flowing up the long neck. Then God gave the giraffe an extra layer of complexity along the neck, including valves and skin, to regulate blood flow while it drinks, ensuring the animal doesn't pass out as soon as it takes the first sip! 

 I have a challenge for each of us as we read these chapters: let us each examine whose authority we have submitted ourselves to in our understanding of creation- the common culture or God? Common culture screams out millions of years, long processes at rates we observe today, and chance. When the culture's view of science and the Bible's view of science seem at odds, may we be bold to submit ourselves to the authority of the Bible. I have been so encouraged by my study of science from a Biblical understanding and see God's fingerprints all over His design. When I see commonalities in DNA, I see a Common Creator. When I see amazing creations, I see an Amazing Designer. My hope and prayer for each of us is that we would submit as finite beings to the Word of our Infinite Father, and when we doubt, be willing to pray, "Lord help my unbelief!" There are amazing scientific and apologetic resources available from a Biblical perspective, and I pray God reveals Himself more to you as you study His Word and His creation! 

 Romans‬ ‭1:19-20‬ ‭says,  "For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For His invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse."

Spend time today thanking God that not only did He use His voice to create the world, but He has also preserved His Word for us! How does this inspire you to spend time immersed in His Word?

God did not need to rest on the seventh day, but set it aside as holy as a model for us. How do you mark a sabbath day? How can you best honor God with the use of a week's layout?

 «Entonces dijo Dios: «Hagamos al hombre a nuestra imagen y semejanza. Y que tenga dominio sobre los peces del mar, sobre las aves del cielo, sobre el ganado, sobre toda la tierra y sobre todo animal que se arrastra sobre la tierra». Y creó Dios al hombre a su imagen, a imagen de Dios lo creó; varón y hembra los creó. Y los bendijo Dios, y les dijo: «Fructificad y multiplicaos, y llenad la tierra, y sojuzgadla, y señoread en los peces del mar, en las aves de los cielos, y en todas las bestias que se mueven sobre la tierra». Y dijo Dios: «He aquí que os he dado toda planta que da semilla, que está sobre la faz de toda la tierra, y todo árbol en que hay fruto que da semilla; os servirán de alimento. Y a toda bestia de la tierra, y a toda ave de los cielos, y a todo lo que se arrastra sobre la tierra, en que hay vida, les he dado toda planta verde para que les sirva de alimento». Y así fue. Y vio Dios todo lo que había hecho, y he aquí que era muy bueno. Y fue la tarde y fue la mañana del sexto día.

‭‭Génesis‬ ‭1‬:‭26‬-‭31‬ ‭ESV‬‬

 Esta sección está repleta de las directrices de Dios para la vida humana. La semana se organizó con el séptimo día bendecido y reservado para el descanso, el sol y la luna para marcar los días festivos, los días y los años. Dios también establece planes para el matrimonio entre un hombre y una mujer, y su unión tendría mayor importancia que la de sus familias de origen. Dios no solo nos cuenta cómo creó la tierra, el mar, las plantas y las criaturas con su voz, sino también cómo crea y da vida al hombre. Me impresiona esto: la voz de Dios tiene el poder de crear este hermoso mundo y todas las criaturas que encontramos. ¡Entonces Dios tuvo la bondad de preservar Sus palabras para nosotros en la Biblia, que el mismo Jesús preservó y citó durante Su tiempo en la tierra! Qué contraste supone esta Palabra vivificante con el reinado temporal de nuestro enemigo; como dice Jesús en Juan 10:10: «El ladrón solo viene para robar, matar y destruir. Yo he venido para que tengan vida y la tengan en abundancia».

Me encanta maravillarme ante las maravillas y el diseño de Dios. ¡Fíjate en el pájaro carpintero! Dios ha diseñado estas pequeñas aves de forma tan genuina y creativa que un solo día picoteando en mi casa debería ser suficiente para causarles lesiones cerebrales traumáticas que los dejaran paralizados. ¡Buenas noticias (o malas noticias para mis paredes)! ¡La lengua del pájaro carpintero envuelve la parte posterior del cráneo y amortigua su cerebro! Otro de mis diseños favoritos es la jirafa. Ya tienen un complejo sistema cardiovascular con alta presión arterial para mantener la sangre fluyendo por su largo cuello. Entonces Dios le dio a la jirafa una capa adicional de complejidad a lo largo del cuello, incluyendo válvulas y piel, para regular el flujo sanguíneo mientras bebe, asegurando que el animal no se desmaye tan pronto como toma el primer sorbo.

Tengo un reto para cada uno de nosotros al leer estos capítulos: examinemos a quién nos hemos sometido en nuestra comprensión de la creación: ¿a la cultura común o a Dios? La cultura común proclama a gritos millones de años, largos procesos a ritmos que observamos hoy en día y el azar. Cuando la visión de la ciencia de la cultura y la visión de la ciencia de la Biblia parecen estar en desacuerdo, seamos valientes y sometámonos a la autoridad de la Biblia. Me ha animado mucho mi estudio de la ciencia desde una perspectiva bíblica y ver las huellas de Dios en todo su diseño. Cuando veo similitudes en el ADN, veo un Creador común. Cuando veo creaciones asombrosas, veo un Diseñador asombroso. Mi esperanza y mi oración para cada uno de nosotros es que nos sometamos como seres finitos a la Palabra de nuestro Padre Infinito y, cuando dudemos, estemos dispuestos a orar: «¡Señor, ayuda mi incredulidad!». Hay recursos científicos y apologéticos asombrosos disponibles desde una perspectiva bíblica, y oro para que Dios se revele más a ustedes mientras estudian Su Palabra y Su creación. 

Romanos‬ ‭1:19-20‬ ‭dice:  «Porque lo que se puede conocer acerca de Dios es evidente para ellos, ya que Dios se lo ha revelado. Porque sus atributos invisibles, es decir, su eterno poder y naturaleza divina, se perciben claramente desde la creación del mundo en las cosas que han sido hechas. Por lo tanto, no tienen excusa».

¿Cuáles son tus formas favoritas de ver a Dios en su creación?

Dedica tiempo hoy a dar gracias a Dios no solo por haber usado su voz para crear el mundo, sino también por haber conservado su Palabra para nosotros. ¿Cómo te inspira esto a pasar tiempo sumergido en su Palabra?

Dios no necesitaba descansar el séptimo día, pero lo apartó como santo para que nos sirviera de modelo. ¿Cómo celebras el día de reposo? ¿Cómo puedes honrar mejor a Dios con la distribución de tu semana?
