Follow Jesus, Love People, Make Disciples - John 15:1-11 - October 3, 2026
"I (Jesus) am the true vine, you are the branches. A branch cannot bear fruit unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in Me." (Excerpts from John 15:1 and 4)
Throughout the New Testament, Jesus gives us directives and counsel on how we can please Him and live a God-honoring life. John 15:1-11 is one of those passages. In these verses, Jesus gives us a formula for how we can be spiritually nourished and have a close relationship with Him. In this devotion, I will use grape vines as an example.
* Verse 2: Grape vines are pruned so that they will bear more fruit. For us, being pruned by Jesus may at first be painful and feel like punishment.
* Verse 4-5: A grape branch cannot bear fruit of itself; it must abide and get its nourishment from the vine. We can't bear spiritual fruit unless we abide in Jesus. Jesus ends by saying, "Apart from Me you can do nothing."
* Verse 7: In this verse Jesus adds one more element to His formula. To be spiritually fruitful, His Word must abide in us.
* Verse 8: In this verse, Jesus tells us that if we bear much fruit, two things will happen: God the Father will be glorified, and bearing much fruit will be proof that we are Jesus' disciples.
* Verses 9-11: In these closing verses, Jesus lays out three reflections
A. "Just as the Father loves Me, I also love you; abide in My love."
B. "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love."
C. "These things I have spoken to you that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full."
Takeaways: So how do we abide in Jesus and bear much fruit for the Kingdom? Many verses in the Bible speak to living a fruitful life, but one verse says it all to me: Philippians 1:21, "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain."
Dear Lord, I know that the 'Spirit is willing and the flesh is weak' (Matthew 26:41), but please prune me so that through the counsel and guidance of the Holy Spirit I will abide in your vine, and live a life that brings honor and glory to Your name.
