Daily Word of Encouragement 10.7.25 - Ben Steele

Creation & Foundations - Genesis 3:14-24 - October 7, 2025

The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them. (Genesis 3:20-21)

 When I was in high school, I had a geometry class with several of my friends.  We had a great teacher, who not only taught clearly, but also seemed genuinely to care about his students.  He was also occasionally involved in the campus Christian club and spoke of his involvement in his church.  I vividly remember a big test in his class towards the end of the year.  One of my friends asked me for an answer pretty early on in the test.  I don't know why he did it, and without thinking, I gave it to him.  I knew right away it was the wrong thing to do - and a moment later, we both got summoned to the front of the class.  He didn't have to ask us if we cheated - he saw it, and I'm sure our faces said it all.  He told us that the consequence for cheating would be a zero for the entire test, which would result in a full grade drop for the semester.  And then he gave us hope - he would mark off what we had completed so far, give us a fresh test, deduct those specific questions, and give us the opportunity to do it again.  He didn't take delight in our failure, nor did he take delight in the punishment.  

 In Genesis 3, after a difficult-to-read section of judgment, God gives Adam and Eve hope.  Yes, there is punishment for wrongdoing, but it comes with mercy.  It comes with care.  And it starts the redemption story that is woven throughout the whole Bible.  They would still have children, and Eve would still be a mother, even though it would be difficult.  Their coverings were replaced by garments of skin that God himself made.  They would be protected and covered by God moving forward.  Yes, there were ongoing punishments and reminders, but they did not have to face them alone.  Even though they were sent out, they were not isolated.  

 In the middle of your difficulty today, even if it is the result of wrongdoing, God offers hope.  It may be difficult to see.  You may even need help or counsel to find it, but it is there - because God is there.  He is continuing his redemption work, and He loves you.  Just as God covered Adam and Eve's sin with clothes, Christ has covered our sin with His work on the cross.  Here is a song that has meant a great deal to me in difficult times: Sovereign Over Us.

 Lord, I love you.  Thank you for the hope that you give.  Thank you for caring for me, even when I fail you.  Please draw me closer to yourself.  Amen.

 El hombre llamó a su mujer Eva, porque ella era la madre de todos los vivientes. Y el Señor Dios hizo para Adán y para su mujer túnicas de pieles y los vistió. (Génesis 3:20-21)

 Cuando estaba en la escuela secundaria, tenía una clase de geometría con varios de mis amigos. Teníamos un profesor estupendo, que no solo enseñaba con claridad, sino que también parecía preocuparse genuinamente por sus alumnos. De vez en cuando participaba en el club cristiano del campus y hablaba de su implicación en la iglesia. Recuerdo vívidamente un gran examen en su clase hacia finales de año. Uno de mis amigos me pidió una respuesta al principio del examen.  No sé por qué lo hizo, y sin pensarlo, se la di. Supe de inmediato que era algo incorrecto, y un momento después, ambos fuimos llamados al frente de la clase. No tuvo que preguntarnos si habíamos copiado, lo vio y estoy seguro de que nuestras caras lo decían todo.  Nos dijo que la consecuencia por copiar sería un cero en todo el examen, lo que supondría una bajada de nota en todo el semestre.  Y entonces nos dio una esperanza: calificaría lo que habíamos completado hasta ese momento, nos daría un nuevo examen, deduciría esas preguntas específicas y nos daría la oportunidad de volver a hacerlo.  No se regodeó en nuestro fracaso, ni se regodeó en el castigo.

 En Génesis 3, después de una sección difícil de leer sobre el juicio, Dios les da esperanza a Adán y Eva. Sí, hay castigo por las malas acciones, pero viene acompañado de misericordia. Viene acompañado de cuidado. Y da inicio a la historia de la redención que se entreteje a lo largo de toda la Biblia. Aún tendrían hijos, y Eva aún sería madre, aunque fuera difícil.  Sus cubiertas fueron reemplazadas por prendas de piel que Dios mismo hizo. Serían protegidos y cubiertos por Dios en adelante. Sí, había castigos y recordatorios continuos, pero no tenían que enfrentarlos solos. Aunque fueron expulsados, no estaban aislados. 

 En medio de tu dificultad actual, incluso si es el resultado de una mala acción, Dios te ofrece esperanza. Puede que sea difícil de ver.  Quizás incluso necesites ayuda o consejo para encontrarla, pero está ahí, porque Dios está ahí. Él continúa su obra de redención y te ama. Así como Dios cubrió el pecado de Adán y Eva con ropa, Cristo ha cubierto nuestro pecado con su obra en la cruz. Aquí hay una canción que ha significado mucho para mí en tiempos difíciles: Sovereign Over Us.

 Señor, te amo. Gracias por la esperanza que me das. Gracias por cuidarme, incluso cuando te fallo. Por favor, acércame más a ti. Amén.
