Bible Prophecy - Acts 1:6-11 - November 19, 2025

 Humans have had an obsession with predicting the future for centuries.  The Mayan civilization predicted the end of the world using their calendar system.  Ancient Egyptians had special priests whose only job was to make predictions. Even today, millions of people try to predict the outcomes of football games in fantasy sports leagues. But what does this desire to "know" reveal about us as Christians?

 When we try to predict our future, we are trying to take control from God, because our sinful nature tells us we know better than him, so he should listen to our plans for the future.  What a silly thought!  How could we possibly think that? 

 Today's verses tell us that God does not want us to try to predict the future.  God has given us his word, the Bible, which is filled with prophecy, some of which has come to fulfillment but many of which are yet to come.  Jesus came to earth just the way historical prophecy had predicted. And verse 11 tells us not only that he is coming back, but how:  the same way he left. 

 I'm a nerd, and I love taking notes and using color-coded highlighters.  When I'm studying my Bible at home, I use a special color to highlight prophecies, so that when I study that passage again, I will know to look out for it.  Some sources claim the Bible has somewhere around 2000 prophecies, and I'm sure I don't have that many highlighted yet, so I'm still on the lookout.  However, I find it very comforting to look through all my purple highlights and see just how many prophecies have already come true, have been revealed to us, and have been recorded for us.  Our God truly keeps his promises! 

I've often heard people say the end must be near because the world "is going to heck in a hand basket" to put it lightly.  And while part of this is true, the world has really been on that trajectory since the garden.  It is a fact that every day brings the world closer to the prophecies recorded by John, but when it comes down to it, it is not for us to know the exact timeline.   We are simply to trust God and believe that his plans are good, to follow his will while we are still here on this earth, and to look forward to the day Christ returns. 

 Father God, thank you for being a God we can trust.  Thank you for always keeping your promises and for giving us the prophets and recorded prophecies in the Bible.  Help us remember to live each day according to your will, and to "lean not on our own understanding," because if we try to lean on that, I know we would fall right onto our faces.  As we look forward to Christ's return, help us to resist the temptation to put our own timeline on things by exercising our faith day by day, hour by hour, moment by moment.

 Los seres humanos han tenido una obsesión por predecir el futuro durante siglos.  La civilización maya predijo el fin del mundo utilizando su sistema de calendario.  Los antiguos egipcios tenían sacerdotes especiales cuya única tarea era hacer predicciones. Incluso hoy en día, millones de personas intentan predecir los resultados de los partidos de fútbol en las ligas deportivas de fantasía. Pero, ¿qué revela este deseo de «saber» acerca de nosotros como cristianos?

 Cuando intentamos predecir nuestro futuro, estamos tratando de quitarle el control a Dios, porque nuestra naturaleza pecaminosa nos dice que sabemos más que él, por lo que debería escuchar nuestros planes para el futuro. ¡Qué pensamiento tan absurdo! ¿Cómo podemos pensar eso?

 Los versículos de hoy nos dicen que Dios no quiere que intentemos predecir el futuro. Dios nos ha dado su palabra, la Biblia, que está llena de profecías, algunas de las cuales se han cumplido, pero muchas otras aún están por cumplirse. Jesús vino a la tierra tal y como lo había predicho la profecía histórica. Y el versículo 11 nos dice no solo que volverá, sino también cómo: de la misma manera que se fue.

 Soy una empollona y me encanta tomar notas y usar rotuladores de colores. Cuando estudio la Biblia en casa, utilizo un color especial para resaltar las profecías, de modo que cuando vuelva a estudiar ese pasaje, sabré que debo prestarle atención.  Algunas fuentes afirman que la Biblia contiene alrededor de 2000 profecías, y estoy segura de que aún no he resaltado tantas, así que sigo buscando. Sin embargo, me resulta muy reconfortante revisar todos mis resaltados en morado y ver cuántas profecías ya se han cumplido, se nos han revelado y se han registrado para nosotros. ¡Nuestro Dios realmente cumple sus promesas!

 A menudo he oído a la gente decir que el fin debe estar cerca porque el mundo «se va al garete», por decirlo suavemente. Y aunque en parte es cierto, el mundo realmente ha estado en esa trayectoria desde el jardín. Es un hecho que cada día acerca al mundo a las profecías registradas por Juan, pero a fin de cuentas, no nos corresponde a nosotros conocer la cronología exacta.   Simplemente debemos confiar en Dios y creer que sus planes son buenos, seguir su voluntad mientras estemos aquí en la tierra y esperar con ilusión el día en que Cristo regrese.

 Padre Dios, gracias por ser un Dios en el que podemos confiar. Gracias por cumplir siempre tus promesas y por darnos los profetas y las profecías registradas en la Biblia.  Ayúdanos a recordar que debemos vivir cada día según tu voluntad y a «no apoyarnos en nuestro propio entendimiento», porque si lo hacemos, sé que caeremos de bruces. Mientras esperamos el regreso de Cristo, ayúdanos a resistir la tentación de imponer nuestro propio calendario a las cosas, ejerciendo nuestra fe día a día, hora a hora, momento a momento.
