Bible Prophecy - Revelation 12:1-12 - November 25, 2025

In the twelfth chapter of Revelation, John of Patmos is shown a great sign that appeared in heaven. 

 What was seen was described as a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon was under her feet. On her head, a crown which had twelve stars. The symbolism of this woman is said to represent either the nation of Israel or the Virgin Mary. Most notably, with the twelve stars representing the twelve tribes of Israel. 

 This woman is pregnant and due to give birth; however, we are introduced to this antagonist in the form of a great dragon with seven heads, ten horns, and seven diadems on each head. This dragon aims to stalk the pregnant woman until she is to give birth, where the dragon will then devour the child. 

 Upon birth, the child is a male. He is said to be one who is to rule all the nations, with a rod of iron. The word “rule” in the Greek (poimainō) specifically means “to tend as a shepherd.” This is most definitely describing the birth of Jesus, and the hardships of satanic influences that followed (massacre of the innocents, fleeing to Egypt). 

 The child was then caught up to God, at His throne. This is believed to be referring to the Ascension of Christ, which is immediately followed by the woman fleeing into the wilderness. There, God has a place prepared for her to seek shelter, where she will be nourished for 1,260 days. This event is most commonly associated with the Tribulation of the Church. 

 It’s worth noting that this chapter, and others in Revelation, use a literary device known as prophetic foreshortening (events separated by long periods of time as if they were happening in close succession), hence why some of the major events in Scripture appear to be condensed or appear different when looked at chronologically. We can take great confidence in the God who has ordained the future for His glory and our good.

 En el capítulo doce del Apocalipsis, a Juan de Patmos se le muestra una gran señal que apareció en el cielo.

 Lo que se vio se describió como una mujer vestida con el sol, y la luna estaba bajo sus pies. En su cabeza, una corona que tenía doce estrellas. Se dice que el simbolismo de esta mujer representa a la nación de Israel o a la Virgen María. En particular, las doce estrellas representan a las doce tribus de Israel.

Esta mujer está embarazada y a punto de dar a luz; sin embargo, se nos presenta a este antagonista en forma de un gran dragón con siete cabezas, diez cuernos y siete diademas en cada cabeza. Este dragón pretende acechar a la mujer embarazada hasta que dé a luz, momento en el que devorará al niño.

Al nacer, el niño es varón. Se dice que es aquel que gobernará todas las naciones con una vara de hierro. La palabra «gobernar» en griego (poimainō) significa específicamente «cuidar como un pastor». Esto describe sin duda el nacimiento de Jesús y las dificultades de las influencias satánicas que le siguieron (la matanza de los inocentes, la huida a Egipto).

El niño fue entonces llevado ante Dios, a su trono. Se cree que esto se refiere a la Ascensión de Cristo, a la que sigue inmediatamente la huida de la mujer al desierto. Allí, Dios tiene un lugar preparado para que ella busque refugio, donde será alimentada durante 1260 días. Este acontecimiento se asocia comúnmente con la Tribulación de la Iglesia.

Cabe señalar que este capítulo, y otros del Apocalipsis, utilizan un recurso literario conocido como «acortamiento profético» (acontecimientos separados por largos períodos de tiempo como si estuvieran sucediendo en rápida sucesión), por lo que algunos de los acontecimientos más importantes de las Escrituras parecen estar condensados o parecer diferentes cuando se observan cronológicamente. Podemos tener una gran confianza en el Dios que ha ordenado el futuro para su gloria y nuestro bien.
