Daily Word of Encouragement 12.11.25 - Ben Whitford

Advent | The Coming Savior - Luke 2:21-38 - December 11, 2025

This is a joyful Bible passage to be able to provide commentary on. When reading this passage alongside commentary from several scholars, I realized just how deep it really is. Other Christians could probably write 10 or more unique devotionals on this exact same passage. So what exactly did I choose to write about? I chose to write about our responsibility as Christians. Whenever we hear, think, or learn about Jesus, we should feel the sheer joy of Anna and Simeon.

 Simeon is the first of the two prophets mentioned in today's reading. He "was righteous and devout", most likely an older man in the community. I find it quite startling that the Lord had revealed to Simeon that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah. That is a massive and wonderful promise to receive from God. Simeon had abounding joy at the sight of Christ, and simply seeing Christ incarnate was enough; he could die in peace. What is interesting is that he isn't all 'sunshine and rainbows' when talking about Jesus to Mary. Rather, he is truthful and honest with her, saying: "This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall, and many others to rise. He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him. As a result, the deepest thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your very soul." Jesus was definitely not always a “nice moral teacher" that the world would adore. Rather, he challenged people and their desires, as shown by what he said in Luke 12:51: "Do you think I have come to bring peace to Earth? No, I have come to divide people against each other!" Simeon was aware of this truth about Jesus.  Simeon was also very truthful to Mary in saying,  "A sword will pierce your very soul." This is fulfilled in John 19:25, which records that Mary witnessed Jesus' crucifixion.  I wonder how we can be like Simeon today, giving truthful advice that helps instead of just saying what people want to hear.

 Anna,  the daughter of Phanuel, is one of only a few prophetesses mentioned in scripture. She was incredibly devoted to the worship of God despite her husband's death and her old age. She didn't know if Israel's Redeemer would come in her lifetime. Despite this, "She never left the Temple but stayed there day and night worshiping God with fasting and prayer." (Luke 3:37). When she saw the child, baby Jesus, she began praising God, and she talked about the child to everyone. As soon as she saw the Redeemer of Israel right in front of her, "she began praising God" because she knew who Jesus was and that this was the most significant event and person ever. 

 We can see the similarities between Simeon and Anna: they both recognized Jesus for who he is, and when they saw him, they both praised God. All of us who are in Christ have witnessed God's amazing work in our lives. Anna and Simeon likely didn't live long after this event recorded in Luke 2, since they never appear anywhere else in scripture, nor are there any reliable church traditions that mention them. All we really know is that they praised God for Jesus' presence and shared the wonderful story of Jesus with all. We should be encouraged by the fact that we, who know even more about Jesus than Anna and Simeon, can share the love of Christ with all who are willing to hear, and can praise him daily for who he is. 

 Father God, I pray that we may be willing to spread the truth of your word with joy and sincerity. Help us to do your will continually. We praise you for who you are and for your presence in our lives.  Amen.

 Este es un pasaje bíblico alegre sobre el que poder comentar. Al leer este pasaje junto con los comentarios de varios eruditos, me di cuenta de lo profundo que es realmente. Otros cristianos probablemente podrían escribir diez o más devocionales únicos sobre este mismo pasaje. Entonces, ¿sobre qué decidí escribir exactamente? Decidí escribir sobre nuestra responsabilidad como cristianos. Cada vez que oímos, pensamos o aprendemos sobre Jesús, deberíamos sentir la misma alegría que Ana y Simeón.

 Simeón es el primero de los dos profetas mencionados en la lectura de hoy. Era «justo y piadoso», probablemente un anciano de la comunidad. Me parece bastante sorprendente que el Señor le revelara a Simeón que no moriría hasta haber visto al Mesías. Esa es una promesa enorme y maravillosa que recibir de Dios. Simeón sintió una alegría inmensa al ver a Cristo, y el simple hecho de ver a Cristo encarnado fue suficiente; podía morir en paz. Lo interesante es que no se muestra tan optimista cuando habla de Jesús a María. Más bien, es sincero y honesto con ella, diciéndole: «Este niño está destinado a hacer caer a muchos en Israel y a levantar a muchos otros. Ha sido enviado como señal de Dios, pero muchos se opondrán a él. Como resultado, se revelarán los pensamientos más profundos de muchos corazones. Y una espada traspasará tu alma». Jesús definitivamente no fue siempre un «buen maestro moral» que el mundo adoraría. Más bien, desafió a las personas y sus deseos, como lo demuestra lo que dijo en Lucas 12:51: «¿Creéis que he venido a traer paz a la tierra? No, he venido a dividir a las personas entre sí». Simeón era consciente de esta verdad sobre Jesús.  Simeón también fue muy sincero con María al decirle: «Una espada traspasará tu alma». Esto se cumple en Juan 19:25, donde se relata que María presenció la crucifixión de Jesús. Me pregunto cómo podemos ser como Simeón hoy en día, dando consejos sinceros que ayuden en lugar de decir solo lo que la gente quiere oír.

 Ana,  la hija de Fanuel, es una de las pocas profetisas mencionadas en las Escrituras. Era increíblemente devota al culto a Dios a pesar de la muerte de su marido y su avanzada edad. No sabía si el Redentor de Israel vendría durante su vida. A pesar de ello, «no se apartaba del templo, sino que servía a Dios día y noche con ayunos y oraciones» (Lucas 3:37). Cuando vio al niño, al bebé Jesús, comenzó a alabar a Dios y habló del niño a todo el mundo. Tan pronto como vio al Redentor de Israel frente a ella, «comenzó a alabar a Dios» porque sabía quién era Jesús y que este era el acontecimiento y la persona más importantes de la historia. 

 Podemos ver las similitudes entre Simeón y Ana: ambos reconocieron a Jesús por quien era y, cuando lo vieron, ambos alabaron a Dios. Todos los que estamos en Cristo hemos sido testigos de la obra maravillosa de Dios en nuestras vidas. Es probable que Ana y Simeón no vivieran mucho tiempo después de este acontecimiento registrado en Lucas 2, ya que no aparecen en ninguna otra parte de las Escrituras, ni hay tradiciones eclesiásticas fiables que los mencionen. Lo único que sabemos con certeza es que alabaron a Dios por la presencia de Jesús y compartieron con todos la maravillosa historia de Jesús. Debemos sentirnos animados por el hecho de que nosotros, que sabemos aún más sobre Jesús que Ana y Simeón, podemos compartir el amor de Cristo con todos los que estén dispuestos a escuchar y podemos alabarlo diariamente por quién es. 

 Padre Dios, te pido que seamos dispuestos a difundir la verdad de tu palabra con alegría y sinceridad. Ayúdanos a hacer tu voluntad continuamente. Te alabamos por quién eres y por tu presencia en nuestras vidas.  Amén.
