Advent | The Coming Savior - John 1:9-14 - December 17, 2025

John 1:9-14. The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, yet the world did not know Him. He came to his own, and His own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

As we think of the “Advent” (arrival) season, these verses tell us what was “arriving”. It was TRUE LIGHT, available to everyone! God’s common grace gives every person the opportunity to recognize their sin.

Jesus came into the world, He created and was not recognized. The most important, amazing human being ever to walk the earth was ignored. People just walked right by Him. It is said that Taylor Swift is the best-known human being on earth today. Can you even imagine passing her on the street or seeing her in a restaurant and failing to recognize her as famous? That’s how it was with Jesus, the God-Man. He created those people, but most did not know Him! They refused to receive Him as significant, as one of their own.

BUT and HOWEVER: some DID receive Him, having been given faith to believe He was the promised Messiah, Savior. Those were (and are today) the ones He takes into His family as children of God. Not because they were born into a particular flesh-and-blood family, but because Almighty God chose them (us) to be born in Him (John 3). Hallelujah!

And the Word that existed from the beginning of time (John 1:1) became a human being who walked, talked, ate, and slept with other human beings. The apostle John testifies, “We have seen His glory as of the only Son of Father God, full of grace and truth”. You and I may not have seen the glory of God displayed in Jesus with our physical eyes as they did, but we “see” in ways that are not physical. By the work of His Spirit in us, we “hear” from Him in His written Word, the Scripture. We know His leading away from sin and toward obedience. We recognize His glory with spiritual eyes and hearts, more and more as we grow in relationship with Him. The Holy Spirit teaches us the significance of His grace (loving and redeeming us when we had no idea we needed Him) and His truth (found in our Bibles and enabling us to recognize error). What a wonderful Lord and Savior we celebrate every day of our lives, not just at Christmas!!

 Juan 1:9-14. La luz verdadera, que alumbra a todos los hombres, venía a este mundo. Él estaba en el mundo, y el mundo fue hecho por medio de Él, pero el mundo no le conoció. Vino a los suyos, y los suyos no le recibieron. Pero a todos los que le recibieron, a los que creen en su nombre, les dio el derecho de ser hijos de Dios, los cuales no son engendrados de sangre, ni de la voluntad de la carne, ni de la voluntad del hombre, sino de Dios. Y el Verbo se hizo carne y habitó entre nosotros, y hemos visto su gloria, gloria como del unigénito del Padre, lleno de gracia y de verdad.

 Al pensar en la temporada de «Adviento» (llegada), estos versículos nos dicen lo que estaba «llegando». ¡Era la LUZ VERDADERA, disponible para todos! La gracia común de Dios le da a cada persona la oportunidad de reconocer su pecado.

Jesús vino al mundo, lo creó y no fue reconocido. El ser humano más importante y asombroso que jamás haya pisado la tierra fue ignorado. La gente simplemente pasaba junto a Él. Se dice que Taylor Swift es el ser humano más conocido en la tierra hoy en día. ¿Te imaginas pasar junto a ella en la calle o verla en un restaurante y no reconocerla como famosa? Así fue con Jesús, el Dios-Hombre. Él creó a esas personas, ¡pero la mayoría no lo conocía! Se negaron a recibirlo como alguien importante, como uno de los suyos.

 PERO y SIN EMBARGO: algunos SÍ lo recibieron, habiéndoles sido dada la fe para creer que Él era el Mesías prometido, el Salvador. Esos fueron (y son hoy) los que Él acoge en Su familia como hijos de Dios. No porque nacieran en una familia particular de carne y hueso, sino porque Dios Todopoderoso los eligió (nos eligió) para nacer en Él (Juan 3). ¡Aleluya!

 Y el Verbo que existía desde el principio de los tiempos (Juan 1:1) se convirtió en un ser humano que caminaba, hablaba, comía y dormía con otros seres humanos. El apóstol Juan testifica: «Hemos visto su gloria como la del único Hijo del Dios Padre, lleno de gracia y de verdad». Puede que tú y yo no hayamos visto la gloria de Dios manifestada en Jesús con nuestros ojos físicos como ellos, pero «vemos» de maneras que no son físicas. Por la obra de Su Espíritu en nosotros, «oímos» de Él en Su Palabra escrita, las Escrituras. Conocemos Su guía para alejarnos del pecado y acercarnos a la obediencia. Reconocemos Su gloria con ojos y corazones espirituales, cada vez más a medida que crecemos en nuestra relación con Él. El Espíritu Santo nos enseña el significado de Su gracia (amándonos y redimiéndonos cuando no teníamos idea de que lo necesitábamos) y Su verdad (que se encuentra en nuestras Biblias y nos permite reconocer el error). ¡Qué maravilloso Señor y Salvador celebramos cada día de nuestras vidas, no solo en Navidad!
