Advent | The Coming Savior - Micah 5:2-5 - December 19, 2025

Micah 5:2-5 - But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days. Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has given birth; then the rest of his brothers shall return to the people of Israel. And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth. And he shall be their peace. When the Assyrian comes into our land and treads in our palaces, then we will raise against him seven shepherds and eight princes of men.

 Have you ever felt small?  I'm short, so I feel small on a daily basis when I need to get the cereal box off the top cabinet shelf, but I'm not talking about feeling physically small.  Have you ever felt like the task, situation, or event you are facing is just too big for you or you are just too small for it?  Our verses today begin with Bethlehem being acknowledged to be small, even "too little to be among the clans of Judah." 

 At the time this prophecy was written, Bethlehem likely had a population of just a few hundred people.  It was so small that many people hearing this prophecy might never have even heard of it.  Imagine someone telling you that the ruler of the world would be born in Duncan Mills; someone from San Francisco would have no idea where that is, and therefore would have a hard time believing anything important could be accomplished there. So, Bethlehem was little, but the one who would come forth from it was big news.  

 Verse 4 says: "And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord,  in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God."  Jesus is our good Shepard, and he keeps us, his flock, in the strength of the Lord: in the majesty of the name of God.  When we feel small, we can remember that a big God is standing over us, protecting and enabling us.  He never intended to leave us alone to face everything on our own!  

 When the problem seems too hard, the situation too daunting, or the task seems too big, it probably is. If you are trying to do it all on your own, I speak from experience. When we try to rely on our own strength, we are small, weak, and inadequate to glorify our God.  It is only by the free gift of salvation and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that we can truly have access to God's amazing power and strength in our everyday lives. It is only through that power that we can be big when we face the hard things in life, finally resting in the knowledge that our God is BIG!  

 Heavenly Father, as Christmas gets closer and closer, I find myself drawn to meditation on the song lyrics" And I, I celebrate the day, That You were born to die, So I could one day pray for You to save my life." Thank you, Father,  that was always your plan from the very beginning, not to leave us alone.  Thank you for Christmas, the birth of your precious son, who would live a perfect life, always knowing what his fate was.  Thank you that Christ was born to die for our sins, thus opening the only path for us to repair our relationship with you through the forgiveness of our sins by imputed righteousness.  I ask that, in all the hustle and bustle of the world at this time of year, you would help us, your chosen ones, remember that it's about more than gifts, family visits, and good food.  It's all about you, Lord.  Amen.

 Miqueas 5:2-5 - Pero tú, Belén Efrata, aunque eres pequeña entre los clanes de Judá, de ti saldrá para mí uno que será gobernante en Israel, cuyo origen es desde la antigüedad, desde los días antiguos. Por lo tanto, él los abandonará hasta el momento en que la que está de parto haya dado a luz; entonces el resto de sus hermanos volverán al pueblo de Israel. Y él se levantará y apacentará su rebaño con la fuerza del Señor, con la majestad del nombre del Señor, su Dios. Y habitarán seguros, porque ahora él será grande hasta los confines de la tierra. Y él será su paz. Cuando el asirio entre en nuestra tierra y pise nuestros palacios, entonces levantaremos contra él siete pastores y ocho príncipes de hombres.

  ¿Alguna vez te has sentido pequeño?  Soy bajito, así que me siento pequeño a diario cuando tengo que coger la caja de cereales del estante superior del armario, pero no me refiero a sentirme pequeño físicamente. ¿Alguna vez has sentido que la tarea, la situación o el acontecimiento al que te enfrentas es demasiado grande para ti o que tú eres demasiado pequeño para ello? Nuestros versículos de hoy comienzan reconociendo que Belén es pequeña, incluso «demasiado pequeña para estar entre los clanes de Judá».

En el momento en que se escribió esta profecía, Belén probablemente tenía una población de solo unos pocos cientos de personas. Era tan pequeña que es posible que muchas personas que escucharon esta profecía ni siquiera hubieran oído hablar de ella. Imagina que alguien te dice que el gobernante del mundo nacerá en Duncan Mills; alguien de San Francisco no tendría ni idea de dónde está eso y, por lo tanto, le costaría creer que allí se pueda lograr algo importante. Así que Belén era pequeña, pero el que vendría de ella era una gran noticia.  

 El versículo 4 dice: «Y se levantará y apacentará su rebaño con la fuerza del Señor,  con la majestad del nombre del Señor, su Dios».  Jesús es nuestro buen Pastor, y nos guarda a nosotros, su rebaño, con la fuerza del Señor: con la majestad del nombre de Dios. Cuando nos sentimos pequeños, podemos recordar que un Dios grande está sobre nosotros, protegiéndonos y dándonos fuerzas. ¡Él nunca tuvo la intención de dejarnos solos para que enfrentáramos todo por nuestra cuenta! 

 Cuando el problema parece demasiado difícil, la situación demasiado abrumadora o la tarea demasiado grande, probablemente lo sea. Si estás intentando hacerlo todo por tu cuenta, te hablo por experiencia. Cuando intentamos confiar en nuestras propias fuerzas, somos pequeños, débiles e insuficientes para glorificar a nuestro Dios. Solo mediante el don gratuito de la salvación y la presencia del Espíritu Santo podemos tener verdadero acceso al asombroso poder y fuerza de Dios en nuestra vida cotidiana. Solo a través de ese poder podemos ser grandes cuando nos enfrentamos a las cosas difíciles de la vida, descansando finalmente en el conocimiento de que nuestro Dios es GRANDE. 

 Padre Celestial, a medida que se acerca la Navidad, me siento atraído a meditar en la letra de la canción: «Y yo celebro el día en que naciste para morir, para que algún día pudiera rezarte para que salvaras mi vida». Gracias, Padre, porque ese fue siempre tu plan desde el principio, no dejarnos solos. Gracias por la Navidad, el nacimiento de tu precioso hijo, que viviría una vida perfecta, sabiendo siempre cuál era su destino. Gracias porque Cristo nació para morir por nuestros pecados, abriendo así el único camino para que reparáramos nuestra relación contigo a través del perdón de nuestros pecados por la justicia imputada.  Te pido que, en medio del ajetreo y el bullicio del mundo en esta época del año, nos ayudes a nosotros, tus elegidos, a recordar que se trata de algo más que regalos, visitas familiares y buena comida. Se trata de ti, Señor. Amén.
